Each team must answer the following questions in its case report. The length of the report should
not exceed four pages. You need not include separate sections on Executive Summary or
Recommendations. Send your answer by email to Anindya Ghose <aghose@andrew.cmu.edu>,
not to the Instructor.
Providian Trust delivered financial and fiduciary services through a network of 216 branches. The
company’s lending products were the principal source of its revenue. Intense competitive
pressures and client demands were driving the need for improvements in the quality of trust
services. Providian embarked on the redesign of the trust and custody management business
processes. The total cost of the project was estimated to be $18 million. Our goal is to study the
challenges of business process redesign, change management and IT project management using
this case as an example. Please focus your attention on the time period described in the case,
and not on subsequent business events concerning the company.
Use the guidelines for preparing case reports to address the following major issues.
1. Use the Strategic Option Generator to assess the strategic import of the Access+ project for
Providian. (20%)
2. Assess the technical, operational and economic feasibility of Access+ as it was handed t the
Implementation Committee? How risky was the project at this juncture? (30%)
3. Assess both the human and technical aspects of the Access+ project management. (30%)
4. What advice would you have given Steve Walsh before he approved the first scheduled
Access+ conversion? (20%)
