INTERNET Garaga Launches Micro Site In April, Garaga launched www.beautyofquality.com, a new micro site that explains the quality of Garaga products. The site’s 3D technology provides a dynamic visual explanation, allowing the visitor to evaluate the six important features of Garaga residential products. Garaga is also launching “100% Garaga,” a new concept that ensures customers that all components of their Garaga garage door are either manufactured by Garaga or meet Garaga’s standards. Designer Doors Opens New Web Site In March, Designer Doors announced a new Web site dedicated to helping homeowners, architects, and builders create the perfect garage and entry doors for their homes. It also includes information for tradespeople, including specifications, installation methods, industry news and trends, and a comprehensive search feature. Visitors also can search for their local territory manager. INDUSTRY R + T 2009: Almost Booked R + T 2009, the world’s leading trade fair for doors/gates, roller shutters, and sun protection, is expected to be twice as large as 2006. Helping the growth is the move to the new Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre, which is twice as large as the old complex. Slated for Feb. 10-14, 2009, 90 percent of the nearly 1,000,000 sq.ft. of hall space has already been booked by exhibitors. Exhibits as large as 10,000 sq.ft. will be common. Almost 600 exhibitors from 35 countries have already registered; about 700 exhibitors from 40 countries are expected. These ideal conditions mean that the high expectations of R + T 2009 will be fulfilled. The National Federation of Door and Gate Manufacturers (BVT) is again organizing its Doors/Gates Forum. Tax Deductions Available for Excess Inventory Excess inventory can be turned into a federal income tax deduction by donating it to charity. This deduction has been available since 1976 under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code Section 170 (e)(3), according to the National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources (NAEIR). By donating new product returns or usable seconds, regular (C) corporations may deduct the cost of the goods plus half the difference between cost and fair market value. S corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships earn a straight cost deduction. After NAEIR accepts the donations, they then provide the proper tax documentation. The goods you donate are redistributed to more than 13,000 qualified schools and nonprofit organizations nationwide. For a free Donation Information Kit, contact NAEIR at 800-562-0955 or donor@naeir.org. TECHNICAL New Garage Door Certification Program to Launch This Summer After years of development, the DASMA Commercial & Residential Garage Door Division plans to roll out a voluntary, code-compliant garage door certification program for wind-load- and windborne-debris-resistance performance. Labels are slated to begin appearing on approved doors beginning July 1. Once active, the program will seek to attain ANSI accreditation, which is necessary to establish and maintain code compliance. DASMA will then apply for approval as a certification entity in Florida and wherever such approval is needed. The program is administered by Architectural Testing, an independent certification firm. “This program embodies the professional goals of DASMA,” says Pat Hunter, Commercial & Residential Garage Door Technical Committee chair. “Obtaining ANSI accreditation, which is acceptable to state and local jurisdictions where code enforcement is ever increasing, elevates this program to a national level.” A list of participants in the program will be published after the program is underway. High Performance Door Division Investigates Green Initiatives In April, the DASMA High Performance Door Division called in Jim Sharar-Stoppel, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional, to outline the activities of the U.S. Green Building Council and the LEED program. Sharar-Stoppel of the Homasote Company, the nation‘s oldest manufacturer of building products from recycled material, expressed confidence that his presentation helped DASMA members “move in the right direction regarding LEED and sustainable design.” DASMA Technical Director Joe Hetzel says that Sharar-Stoppel will be invited to address other DASMA members at the 2008 DASMA Fall Forum. DASMA Developing Standard for Rolling Grilles The DASMA Rolling Door Division has initiated a standard for rolling grilles in commercial and industrial applications. The new grille standard will be patterned after ANSI/DASMA 203, the standard for nonfire-rated rolling doors. The grille standard will address such components as guide assemblies, curtains, brackets, hoods, barrel assemblies, and tension wheels, and include provisions for operation, maintenance, and labels. Don Mills, Rolling Door Division chair, feels that the standard will fill an important need for a niche in the access industry. “Grilles have their own unique set of design criteria, and the DASMA standard will help toward consistency and uniformity within that industry,” says Mills. DASMA Explores Partnership With Dock Equipment Manufacturers In April, representatives of DASMA and the Loading Dock Equipment Manufacturers Association (LODEM) discussed partnering the two organizations to address the effect of dock environments on vehicular-access dock doors. The meeting, held during a Material Handling Industry exposition in Cleveland, involved DASMA Technical Director Joe Hetzel and Ray Niemeyer of LODEM. Hetzel says that DASMA has drafted a Technical Data Sheet on dock doors and dock environments. He adds that an educational seminar may also be developed. Further correspondence between DASMA and LODEM is expected to take place this summer. Florida Program Publishes Clarification on Garage Doors As a result of communication with DASMA, the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program has clarified requirements for reimbursable products. Florida door dealers should take note of the following, published in the March 2008 edition of Retrofit Florida, an electronic newsletter for contractors participating in the My Safe Florida Home program. “As a result of continued questions over garage doors and what is reimbursable under the My Safe Florida Home program, please pay special attention to the following information: “There are two ways to protect openings from debris impact. One is to install window and door products designed and tested to meet wind pressure, pressure cycle test, and impact requirements. The other way is to cover the windows or doors with shutters that meet those same requirements. “The MSFH program recommends the installation of impact resistant garage doors and shutters for openings and doors for maximum protection of the home, regardless of the home’s location in Florida. However, for reimbursement purposes, the shutters or garage door must meet the requirements under the Florida Building Code (FBC) for the wind-borne debris region in the jurisdiction where the home is located. “FBC-approved bracing for an FBC-approved wind-rated garage door is also reimbursable under the MSFH program. Homes in Miami-Dade or Broward counties must install impact resistant products approved with a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance. “Prior to reimbursement, MSFH reimbursement staff will review the approval on the FBC website and will look for the following responses under “Limits of Use“: Approved for use in HVHZ: (Yes where applicable) Approved for use outside of HVHZ: Yes Impact Resistance: (Yes where applicable) “To learn whether a product has received approval by the Florida Building Code or the Miami-Dade Building Code, visit the organizations’ respective websites at: Florida Building Commission: http://www.floridabuilding.org/c/default.aspx -- Click on ‘Product Approval‘ and choose among your menu options. “Miami-Dade Building Code: www.miamidade.gov/buildingcode/ -- Look for the Search Approved Products tab under Product Control on the site’s menu.”
