Solemnity of the Most Holy
Body and Blood of Christ
[Jesus] took bread, said the
blessing, broke it, gave it to
them, and said, "Take it; this is
my body." Then he took a
cup, gave thanks, and gave it
to them, and they all drank from it. He said to
them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will
be shed for many.” [Mark 14: 22-24]
To help open the treasures of the revised Roman
Missal, each week I’m giving a reflection on the
three Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the
book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. I’m
truly amazed at the theological depth and beauty
of these prayers; I hope you are, too!
Corpus Christi – Collect
O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament
have left us a memorial of your Passion,
grant us, we pray, so to revere the
sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood
that we may always experience in ourselves
the fruits of your redemption.
The Eucharist is THE Sacrament of Sacraments.
Since it contains so much grace and salvific
power, the Most Holy Eucharist is THE greatest
of all sacraments! The Eucharist is primarily the
everlasting memorial of Christ’s Passion, Death
and Resurrection. Jesus vehemently stated that
“unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and
drink His Blood, you do not have life within you”
[John 6:53] and God would never demand of us
anything impossible! So unless the Eucharist is
His REAL PRESENCE, we could never fulfill His
mandate to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood!
Some say Jesus only meant this symbolically,
and that Holy Communion is merely a way to
remember Him. But the Greek word anamnesis,
which means ‘to remember’ [contrary to the far
more familiar word, ‘amnesia’ which means ‘to
forget’] is also a conundrum. For how can we
‘remember’ someone who lived 2,000 years ago
unless He is still truly present with us? No
wonder we genuflect to the Eucharist, worship
it, and surround it with signs of respect!
Corpus Christi – Prayer over the Offerings
Grant your Church, O Lord, we pray,
the gifts of unity and peace,
whose signs are to be seen in mystery
in the offerings we here present.
Unity and Peace.
To ‘break bread’ with
someone implies that we are in union with them
and enjoy their friendship. Sharing in the one
bread and chalice which contain Christ’s Body
and Blood give witness to, reaffirm and
strengthen our unity with the Lord and one
another. Conversely, unless we are in union
with Christ and His Church’s leadership, her
teachings and her members, we should not
enter into Holy Communion!
The other byproduct of the Eucharist is one of
the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the Risen Lord’s
first gift after His Resurrection: peace. Each time
we receive Christ’s Body and Blood we also
receive the gift the first disciples received when
they saw Christ in His risen Flesh and Blood:
“Peace be with you!” [John 20: 19] No wonder we
get the word compassion, which is that tender
peaceful bond of unity and love, from two Latin
words: ‘cum panis’ which literally means ‘with
bread!’ Just as our compassionate Lord comes
to us in the Eucharist, we must be there for
those who need our compassionate presence!
Corpus Christi – Prayer after Communion
Grant, O Lord, we pray,
that we may delight for all eternity
in that share in your divine life,
which is foreshadowed in the present age
by our reception of your precious Body and Blood.
Precious Body, Precious Blood. The refrain of
this Communion hymn uses the word ‘precious’
to describe the priceless, inestimably valuable,
awesome gift of the Eucharist. Could we ever
find the right word to describe the bread and
wine that becomes the very elements by which
God saved the world: Christ’s Precious Body and
Blood? As this prayer states, we are not only
delighted to have shared in it here on earth; we
are overjoyed that we will one day share it for
all eternity in heaven! For then we will enjoy
the intimate contact we now have with Jesus
through sacramental sign … face to face!
And so I plead with all who cannot properly
present themselves for Holy Communion:
remove whatever obstacle is keeping you from
this great Gift! Seek that annulment; go to
confession; become a Catholic; get your
marriage blessed; do whatever - please!
In His holy Name,
Rev. Thomas J. Serafin
The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ
(Corpus Christi)
First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8
Moses
explained
to
the
people
the
commandments he had received from God.
Upon hearing them, the entire community
immediately agreed they would do as God had
told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls
and sprinkled the people with their blood,
calling it the blood of the covenant they had
made.
Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15
Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices,
but instead he offered up his own blood to
cleanse all people of the transgressions they
had committed under the first covenant with
God. Christ instead brought a new covenant,
which, if kept, would lead to eternal life.
Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26
Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the
Passover supper. During the meal he blessed
bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my
body.” He then offered them wine and called it
his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be
poured out on behalf of many.”

Psalms: The School of Prayer
The Psalms move from telling the
“outside” story of salvation history
to telling the “inside” story which
comes from the deeply personal
perspective of one who is seeking God. The
Psalms reveal Israel’s response to God’s
covenant, and serve as a model for our response
to Him. Our communication with God will be
enhanced through a deeper understanding of
the Psalms. You will find that the Psalms can
empower your prayer to become an honest and
personal dialogue with God!

were willing to endure terrible sufferings and
martyrdom for their fidelity and love for Christ
and their Catholic Faith. This CD will give you

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults [RCIA]
Have you been considering the
possibility of becoming a member of
the Catholic Church? The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
is the way in which adults are
prepared to become fully active, participating
members of the Catholic Church. Specifically,
non-Catholic Christians and Catholics who are
only baptized are prepared for Confirmation
and first Eucharist and non-Christian adults are
prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and first
Eucharist.
We now extend an invitation to “Come and
see” to anyone who might be searching or
discerning if the Catholic Faith is a way to
commit more deeply to the call of Jesus. Be
assured that now is the time to listen, to share
and to be open to the Spirit of God.
Commitment to the process may follow in the
months ahead. If you would like to find out
more about the RCIA process, please contact
Diane
Luceri
at
782-1475

or

Confirmation should also contact Diane.
