Annual Meeting Minutes (March 7, 2010)

4
January, 2011
Dear Erindale Friends,
I begin my introduction to this 2010 Annual Report of our Congregation--my
12th time doing so among you, my 25th time in total--with deep thanks for the many of
you who offered such wonderful encouragement and practical support during the period
from August to December of this past year, during which we struggled with the illnesses
and, finally, the deaths of my father, Derrick Young, my mother, Patricia Young, and
Kate’s mother, Mary McLarty.
Not least, among the support that I felt, were those of you who shared with me
your own experiences of such loss, near or long-past. Even just a “been there, done
that” acknowledgement of the more practical challenges of emptying-out the family
home told me that what we were going-through is a shared experience. This is one
great benefit in being a church together: we can find that there is very little that comes
to us, in life, in which we are alone.
Usually, in an Annual Report like this one, I remind you, on this page, to read the
Report with an eye to seeing what our whole Church, and our many workers, have
done. That is, I am pleased and proud to be a Minister at Erindale, and in any year I
have worked hard to offer an effective ministry. But, a document like this one shows
clearly that it takes a congregation to make the life of the Church. This is your Report to
yourselves about your year.
2010 made that more than usually apparent. For several months during the
Autumn season, I was forced to curtail my activities: the Confirmation Class went in
abeyance, and I had to delay the start of the ‘Junia’ study group. I missed meetings,
and left the Worship Committee and its Chairperson, Ralph Nott, to stickhandle four
Sundays on short notice. All this amid Erindale’s usual yearly program of mission and
ministry.
And it all worked--it all worked pretty well. Read this report, and you will see that.
Read Ralph Nott’s report and be thankful for your Church and its leaders and workers.
Blessings,
Rev. Neil

Report of the Chair of Church Council
My second year as your council chair has been challenging, but very satisfying at the
same time. I appreciate very much the dedicated and devoted Council members that
work on your behalf. It is my pleasure and privilege to work with each of them.
Erindale is an active and hard working church family. We have something interesting for
everyone with the variety in the worship services supported by an eclectic music
program. The Erindale church family is blessed to have devoted and enthusiastic staff
members, Reverend Neil Young, Music Director Rob Anderson, Office Administrator
Sarah McEwing and Wedding Consultant Carol Tranton.
We enjoy an excellent relationship with our tenant of thirty-five years, Springfield
Preparatory and Nursery School led by Janet Murphy. Please remember the teachers
and students in your prayers.
We welcome new people each week, visitors and guests, and most are smiling,
responding to you! Keep up your good work.
Givings are the main source of the revenue to pay our dedicated staff, to pay for
cleaning services, to maintain the building and grounds including the Memorial Gardens,
to pay the utilities and to finance programs such as Worship and the outstanding music
program, the excellent Sunday school as well as numerous Outreach programs. Please
keep this in mind when you consider and decide on the amount of your financial
support for Erindale, your church family.
A 2010 highlight for me was Marilyn Johnston’s visit to the Sandy Lake First Nation in
May 2010 and the report that she presented at the worship service on October 31. The
visit and follow up contacts have taken this 30-year Erindale-Sandy Lake relationship to
a new level. We all look forward to Outreach projects in 2011 and beyond, that will
make a difference for the Sandy Lake First Nation.
You continually amaze us with your generosity, how you step up when a need is
identified. Sandy Lake gifts, Christmas baskets, the Haiti Appeal and the funding for
Marilyn Johnston’s visit to Sandy Lake in 2010, are just a few examples.
There was a tremendous response from the congregation to the appeals for the kitchen
renovation, the $15K budget shortfall and the increased givings pledges for 2011. In
each case the campaign goals were met or exceeded.
Two major projects were planned, funded and completed in 2010. Council approved the
kitchen renovation in June and the UCW committed to purchase new appliances. Thank
you, Bill Davy for leading the tear down of the old kitchen cupboards, saving Erindale
6
time and money. Gary and Susan Lyons, thank you for your leadership and daily
attendance while under construction enabling completion of the kitchen renovation on
time and on budget.
In the fall we learned that the roof required replacement. Thank you George Beagley
for leading the effort to plan the work, choose the contractor then attend the site daily,
ensuring that the project was completed satisfactorily, on time and within the budget.
Erindale is sponsoring and providing support, spiritual and financial, to Brock Shaver
while he studies theology at Emmanuel College. Brock aspires to become a United
Church minister.
Reverend Neil and Reverend Kate coped with the loss of three parents over a six week
period in November-December. Rob Anderson had back surgery in September and is
making a nice recovery. Please remember the Young family and Rob Anderson in your
prayers.
Thank you to Ralph Nott, Rob Anderson, Shirley Saull, Psalm 98, Brock Shaver and
Sarah McEwing for stepping up during the absences in the fall of Reverend Neil and
Music Director Rob Anderson.
Looking back, this year, like any year had its painful memories. We bid a sad farewell to
a number of Erindale members. Please remember all of their families in your prayers.
Stewardship will remain a continuing preoccupation. We must renew the Erindale
leadership team by identifying and recruiting new leaders. We may consider another
campaign to address capital needs, projectors and screens, improvements to the sound
system and other enhancements for the Sanctuary.
Please take a moment to recognize and thank the many volunteers that make Erindale
United Church, your church, what it is. Consider a role for yourself if you are not
already involved.
Thank you all!
Brian Duckett, Chair of Council

Christian Development
Mission
To develop and sustain a nurturing environment for Christian Education programs that
provide knowledge and understanding of God’s word and meet the needs of all
members and segments of the Erindale family and community.
Mandate
To develop the policies and programs for Christian education within Erindale, according
to United Church standards, and to ensure there are resources, including financial, to
carry out these programs with approval of Council. This includes support and guidance
for Sunday School programs and teachers, the Crib and Toddler room, adult education,
youth ministry and any opportunities for spiritual growth.
Achievements in 2010
The Sunday School program has been ably and enthusiastically overseen by Sunday
School coordinator Lynn Norris and a dedicated group of teachers and parent
volunteers. Thanks to all for your wonderful work. The Sunday School classes meet
during Sunday worship services and the teaching encourages the learning of the Bible.
The Sunday School continues to enjoy the two classrooms off Gardner Hall. This past
year included the participation of the students and teachers in special worship services
including Christmas Fest and a youth led service on Mother’s Day. The graduation
service and picnic was well attended and enjoyed by many. Special fundraising for
United Church Mission and Service Fund was a great success. Please see Sunday School
report following.
 The Crib and Toddler Room is a very important part of the Sunday School.
Thanks to Terry Wykurz for her direction and her great volunteers in caring
for the youngest members of Erindale.

The Spirituality Group during the fall session. Members of the congregation
were challenged on what it means to be Christian in today’s world. Thanks to
Ruth Nott for organizing and leading this study.

Doug Johnson and the Chancel Players performed once during the year at the
early worship service on Christmas Eve, to the delight of the congregation.
Thank you Doug. Please see report following.

Sunday School
The Erindale United Church Sunday School had another successful year in 2010, with
just under 40 children and youth registered. The school was coordinated by Lynn
Norris and classes were ably led by superb ‘teaching teams’ for each grade level:
Crib and Toddler Room: Terry Wykurz, Charlotte Duncan, Pat Jenkins, Joyce
Murdoch, Marilyn Hurst, Heather Lockhart
Kindergarten: Eleanor McIntosh (January to June), Jane Shores, Cathy Stone
Primary Jutta Argao and Lynn Norris, with assistance January to June from Karen
Nummi
Junior: Karen Bright, Cynthia Carr, Alan Schaubel
Youth: Jim Bright (January to June), Ralph Nott, Craig Laferriere
The Seasons of the Spirit curriculum continued to provide lectionary-based
programming for the Sunday School, and provided the children with a lesson that
generally follows the sermon topic delivered during Worship Service. Following the
children’s story time in Worship Service, the Sunday School classes gathered in Gardner
Hall for music led by Violet Chepil, the Junior Choir leader from January to June, and by
Jim Bright from September to December. The children perform some of the songs they
learned at Worship Services throughout the year. Following music time, the children
divide into their class levels for lessons, activities, crafts and discussion.
Achievements in 2010
Sunday School special events in 2010 included the annual Family Service led by the
Sunday School on Mother’s Day, May 9th, and the annual Sunday School Graduation
and Family Picnic in June. The Sunday School students enjoyed a Thanksgiving
celebration on October 10th that featured games and treats, and also sponsored a
Halloween Costume Parade on October 31st, inviting the congregation to join the
children in dressing-up as their favourite Bible character.
To finish off the year, Christmas Fest was held following Worship Service and a light
lunch on December 19th. Each class performed a skit, and Psalm 98 provided music
and carol singing throughout the concert.
A special thanks to all of the Sunday School teachers for dedicating their time, energy
and enthusiasm; to Jim Bright and Violet Chepil for leading the Sunday School music
time; and to all of the students who make our Sunday School program an important
part of Erindale’s worship.
Erindale Chancel Players
This year The Erindale Chancel Players had the pleasure of presenting a new play by
Craig Laferriere at the early service on Christmas Eve: “The Other Wise Man” based on
the story by Henry Van Dyke. The play described how a fourth wise man, who set out
to find the Messiah, was side tracked along the way because he stopped to help other
people, using his wealth and wisdom in aiding them. In the end, it was only after the
9
crucifixion that he realized that doing good deeds is the way to meet the Lord, not
physical proximity. The play challenged the congregation to take this message home as
part of their Christmas and carry it out in their actions.
This year it was a delight to work with the large cast in adding to the Christmas Eve
service. The players were: Karen Bright, Joseph Carr, Brian Crombie, Brian Duckett,
Garry Jenkins, Doug Johnston, Craig Laferriere, Claire McEwing, Rachel McEwing and
Claudette Neita (whose beard was the highlight of the make up department!). Images
used to set the scenes were provided by Craig and Doug.
Support for audio/visual manipulation and music was again provided by our unsung
hero, Rick Dawson who put up with last minute changes with his usual aplomb. We also
thank Sarah McEwing and Rev Neil for their support.
Doug Johnston
Spirituality Group
This has been a very successful and challenging program on Saving Jesus for the third
millennium. Interviews of some of today’s leading scholars are followed by discussions
on the questions of faith that are raised.
An average of 12 participants met on Saturday mornings through the Fall and during
January for this 12 session program. Sessions were facilitated by a wide diversity of
leaders – Doug Johnston, Marilyn Johnston, Ruth Nott, Brock Shaver, and Walter Sowa.

Highlights
 Continued to publish The Grapevine 4 times per year in advance of the major
events in the Church year, in both electronic and print form. The number for
print version continues to decline as more of the congregation receives the
newsletter by email.
 The day to day administration of the web site is now in the capable hands of the
Office Administrator who keeps the events pages and calendar up to date.
10
Future
 Train resources required to support the Worship Committee in meeting the needs
of Worship Service Audio Visuals.
Congregational Care
Mission:
Our goal is to develop and maintain a nurturing and enjoyable environment that will
provide a knowledge and understanding of God’s love.
Mandate:
In working towards our mission, we provide pastoral care through visiting,
communicating with and welcoming the members and friends of Erindale United
Church.
Achievements in 2010:
 Hosted the University of Toronto (Mississauga) lecture series in the fall. The
series consisted of five weekly lectures followed by coffee and after the third
lecture, we provided a light lunch. This year we realized a profit of $2,631.20
from both the lunch and rental of the facility, which was placed in the General
Fund. Once again we thank Dianne and David Drennan for supervision of the
parking lot and George Beagley for looking after audio visual. For the 25th
anniversary of the Perspectives lecture series we decorated the tables with silver
balloons featuring the number 25.
 Continued to distribute and mail the Grapevine newsletter to our congregation
four times a year. Many members of the congregation now view the Grapevine
on the church web site. If you have not already given the office your email and
would like to read it electronically please notify us at
churchoffice@erindaleunited.org. You will be notified by email when a new issue
has been posted. Thanks to the couriers who help in the delivery of the
Grapevine and to Doug Johnston for his dedication as editor of the Grapevine.
 Cindy Williams continues to mail our sympathy, get well, new member, thinking
of you, new baby and 1st anniversary of baptism cards. If you know of someone
who would appreciate receiving a pastoral care card, please contact Cindy or
Sarah McEwing in the church office.
 Priscilla Brandy has retired from collecting the subscription orders for the United
Church Observer magazine. Jennifer Code will be taking over from her.
 A Welcome Table runs each Sunday morning to introduce visitors to Erindale. A
member of Congregational Care is available at the Welcome Table to answer
questions and to invite our guests to Gardner Hall for refreshments and
conversation.
 Updated the information brochure for the Welcome Table. Brochures are
available to visitors.
11


This year because of Rev Neil’s own bereavement we mailed cards to each
person in the congregation who was bereaved during 2010 instead of hosting a
quiet Christmas service.
A prayer request box remains in the Narthex. Anyone in need of prayer is
encouraged to place their request in this box. All requests are held in confidence
and Rev. Neil is the only one who will open this box. You may also present your
requests to any member of Congregational Care or to Marie Porter.
Plans for 2011:





Continue to encourage new members to join our committee
Continue to welcome and invite visitors to join us for refreshments after worship
Regularly update the Grapevine lists.
Regularly update the prayer requests and encourage feedback from those
requesting prayer. People requesting prayers are encouraged to keep us
informed about progress and changes so that we may know how to pray, and
when prayers are no longer needed.

Finance and Property
Remembrance
This year we were saddened by the loss of Ian Nott, long time member of the Finance
and Property Committee and Chair of the Stewardship Committee. His work was a fine
model for us all.
12
Mandate
To ensure proper financial controllership and property management within the context
of service to God, our members and our community. To create an environment within
the Church where financial resources are raised to assist in meeting the Church’s future
needs and accomplish future goals. The Finance, Property and Resources Committee is
concerned with tangible property and funds, and so the vision and the mission of the
Committee get woven together.
Mandate Execution
 To manage the generation of income, together with the distribution of funds and
resources, to enable the mission and ministry of the church to be accomplished
through its staff and members, within the agreed budget.
 To prepare three year financial plans that are in concert with the objectives and
strategies of the Church Council for the same time periods.
 To ensure the fabric of the church and all its operating systems are in good
repair and functioning effectively and efficiently.
 To provide a safe, secure, and clean environment for staff and church members.
 To work closely with the Chairs of other Church Committees, Organizations, and
Springfield Preparatory and Nursery School, to achieve common goals.
 To appoint members of the committee to manage specific functional areas under
the remit of this committee, (e.g. budgeting, insurance, safety, and security,
maintenance/repairs) and give support in these areas when requested.
Achievements In 2010
Two major projects were undertaken this year:
 The kitchen was completely renovated in collaboration with the UCW. The funds
were raised by a special campaign of the Stewardship Committee. The layout of
the kitchen was redesigned by the UCW to work better, which required new
stove hoods installed in the west wall. The electrical system was upgraded and
the heating was changed from electrical to gas. New cabinets, stoves, fridge and
dishwasher were installed. The general manger of the project was Gary Lyons
 The roof was entirely re-shingled by Advanced Roofing with Cambridge 30 year
shingles. The previous roofing lasted only 12 years, but we were able to
recuperate some of the cost of the new shingles from the guarantee.
 Conducted spring and fall clean-ups. We worked in front of the church to clear a
bushy area and increase the parking lot size. Potholes in the asphalt were filled
in. The private property sign was replaced. Inside, a hatch was made to cover a
hole in the ceiling on the stage. The loft above the kitchen was cleaned out. The
janitor’s room in the school was cleaned out.
 Organized successful spring garage sale. The fall garage sale was postponed
 Began an audit of Risk and Threats, and matched to Policies
 Installed wire mesh along the soffits around the sanctuary to keep squirrels out
of the church
13


Proposed the creation of a new Stewardship Committee to report to Council
instead of F&P
Conducted a well organized and successful stewardship program in November to
raise $15K to meet 2010 budget
Plans For 2011
 Organize garage sales for spring and fall
 Work closely with Council and the congregation to determine which capital items
will be addressed this year
 Do an audit of small repairs and painting that require action this year
 Make financial decisions that at all times reflect both the program needs of the
church and the current economic climate
Committee Members
George Beagley, Bill Davy, Rick Dawson ( Vice Chair), David Drennan, Craig Laferriere
(Chair), Earle Laycock, Brian Longley, Gary Lyons, Bob MacGregor, Barbara Manchur
(Treasurer), Beth Rutherford (Envelope Steward), Paul Sabourin (Interim-chair
Stewardship) and Rev. Neil Young, Minister.
Acknowledgements
The committee members named in this report worked long and hard to complete the
accomplishments listed above along with many others too numerous to mention, but
also requiring time, expertise, knowledge, sweat, muscle and a good dose of humour.
The recurring daily, weekly and monthly tasks are not listed in the accomplishments
above but they kept the lights on, the church heated, staff paid and the building in
good repair. The committee members lifted, built, carried, painted, cleaned, wrote
reports, entered figures, paid bills, built budgets, developed policies, read meters,
consulted, counted money, recorded givings, drafted policies, attended meetings,
changed sign messages and organized programs. They are an outstanding group of
volunteers! In addition, other members of the congregation stepped forward on
numerous occasions to share their particular skills and augment our numbers. Thank
you for your support, it is greatly appreciated!!
Contacts: Craig Laferriere, Chair and Rick Dawson, Vice Chair
Ministry and Personnel
Mission
The Ministry & Personnel Committee provides a confidential setting for consultation with
and support and assessment of all staff at Erindale United Church.
Mandate
M&P meets with staff and church groups to ensure objectives are being met as defined by
Council. Once per year, each staff member participates in a performance review with two
14
committee members. The reviews provide an opportunity for mutual reflection on
accomplishments, performance against competencies and job duties, as well as to establish
goals and learning plans for the subsequent year. Resulting salary and budgets are forwarded
to Council for approval.
Achievements in 2010
 Violet Chepil’s contract as Junior Choir Director was not renewed past June 30,
2010. Rob Anderson took over responsibility for the Junior Choir in September.

It was determined that there is a need for Risk Management protocols for staff
members regarding building security, personal conduct and potential areas to be
aware of and a review of possible dangers. Discussions were held with Rev. Neil,
and this year protocols will be finalized.

The committee as a whole met with Rev. Neil to review his accountability Report
in detail in September. This was followed in November by his Performance
Evaluation, once again providing the opportunity to document the excellent
leadership he provides to the Erindale community. A copy of the Accountability
Report and Evaluation report are kept in confidential files.

Our Office Administrator Sarah McEwing was also reviewed regarding
performance and goals by two committee members and received glowing reports
from all consulted committees and individuals in all her areas of responsibility.

Rob Anderson’s evaluation was done by two other committee members. It is
obvious to the congregation that the music program is excellent. The choir is
growing and performing to a high level and Rob is a valuable addition to our
church.

Weddings are down again this year with only four on site ones booked and two
of those subsequently cancelled. Two off site weddings were done one
performed by Rev. Neil. Although the numbers were small the execution was
perfection thanks to Carol Tranton who excels as Wedding Coordinator.

At the end of the calendar 2010, Fred Williams and Dick Carruthers are leaving
the committee and Jutta Argao and Laura Turner are taking over as co-chairs of
M & P starting in January 2011

Chapters gift certificates were given to all staff members as a token of
appreciation from the congregation through M & P.
The committee met as and when required and as usual all discussions were confidential
and no minutes were kept.
15
The committee at year end was Jutta Argao, Susan Christie, Garry Jenkins, Laura
Turner, Fred Williams and Dick Carruthers.
I would like to personally thank my committee and the ad hoc committees that worked
with us for their fantastic work and dedication to Erindale United Church since I
assumed the chair of M & P in 2006.

Board of Trustees
Mission & Mandate
The Board of Trustees of Erindale United Church holds all the property of our
congregation for the use and benefit of the congregation as part of the United Church.
As a result, the Board of Trustees deals with property issues that would normally be
17
associated with ownership although the day to day responsibility of property
management belongs to Finance and Property Committee.
2010 Highlights
 We welcomed three new members in 2010. Priscilla Brandy, Tom McIlwraith and
Mary Patterson bring valuable expertise to the Board. Fran Morden retired from
the Board after many years of faithful service and we thank her for her many
contributions. Sarah McEwing joined the group as a non-voting member to
become secretary of the Board of Trustees
 Numerous special Board meetings were held to facilitate the swap of a small
parcel of land at the front of the church with Credit Valley Golf Course. The
objective is to obtain ownership of the portion of the front parking lot that is
currently owned by the Golf Course and in return to give the golf course a small
slice of land along the fence
 A survey of our property was completed. Not only was this required to
accomplish the transaction with Credit Valley Golf Course but it also brings our
survey up-to-date
 Preliminary work was undertaken on a different and more aggressive investment
strategy for the Endowment Fund
 Preliminary work was undertaken on the church archives
Plans for 2011
 Conclude discussions and legal agreements with Credit Valley on the swap of the
land at the front of the church.
 We plan to install appropriate property markers along the perimeter of our
property where such a marker or fence does not presently exist.
 Work will continue in assessing the status of our church archives and developing
a plan as required.
 Work will continue to finalize investment strategy for our Endowment Fund.

Acknowledgements:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Shirley Saull for stepping up and leading
the congregation with music during the October Sunday services while Rob Anderson
was recovering from surgery. As well, during Advent, both Rob Anderson and Brock
Shaver took individual Sundays and provided leadership. I would also like to
acknowledge the behind the scenes efforts of Sarah McEwing. The months of October
19
thru December were anything but normal. Sarah was able to stick handle many issues
and has been invaluable to me, providing timely communication and ensuring necessary
activities were completed so that a continued meaningful worship service was
conducted each Sunday. Erindale United is truly blessed with individuals willing to work
together under difficult circumstances to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Mandate:
To provide musical leadership for the congregation of Erindale United Church during
worship services and to offer opportunities for a variety of musical and cultural activities
in the spirit of fellowship and Christian ideals.
Introduction:
This was the first full year under the leadership of our new Director of Music, Robert
Anderson. The choir is singing new music, and has benefitted from robust choral
rehearsals. In addition, a variety of formats of worship music have been presented with
the participation of members of the Worship Band, Psalm 98.
Achievements in 2010:
Thursday evening rehearsals in the sanctuary have improved the face to face
interaction between the choir and the Director of Music. New choral music has been
offered during the Sunday services, including a variety of choral responses to prayers,
and closing Benedictions. On occasion, blended music services with Psalm 98 and the
Junior Choir were presented. Special music was also prepared for Easter, Thanksgiving,
Remembrance Day, Advent and Christmas Services. The choir also made the
commitment to sing at all church funerals.
Challenges in 2010
At the end of September, our Director of Music underwent successful back surgery.
During his convalescence, music was provided for the church services in a variety of
ways. Psalm 98 led a few services. Shirley Saull led the choir from the organ for 3
Sundays in October, with Steve Code providing Preludes and Postludes on the piano.
The Rev. George Dunkley led the choir for two Sundays in November. Our Music
Director, Rob Anderson led the Sunday Service on one occasion when both Rev. Neil’s
mother and mother-in-law passed away during the same weekend. Again Steve Code
20
helped out with some incidental piano music. During the year, choir membership
decreased from its peak at Christmas 2009, and recruitment of new members for the
choir continues to be an issue of concern.
The Choir Fund:
In 2008, the executive of the choir was reorganized, eliminating the formal position of
Choir Treasurer. The choir’s separate bank account was closed and its balance of funds
(produced from previous fundraising activities for music within the church) was
transferred to the Church and held as a special designated “Choir Fund”, jointly
supervised by the choir and the Worship committee. The bulk of this fund was spent on
music for the choir in 2009, and a small residue was exhausted in 2010. This fund has
now been closed. In accordance with Church accounting procedures, any funds raised
by the choir in the current or future years will be deposited into general church
revenue.
Future Plans for 2011:
The choir is committed to presenting a variety of choral music during worship services,
and having “blended music services” with Psalm 98 and the Junior Choir. The choir
looks forward to maintaining its strength and continuing to contribute to the vocal
praise and worship activities of the church.

Erindale Worship Band- Psalm 98
Psalm 98 is the Erindale United Worship Band. The band consists of youth members at
the secondary school level as well as adult members of the Erindale congregation. We
perform mainly contemporary Christian worship music with some forays into gospel and
traditional hymns with a contemporary styling. This past year Psalm 98 routinely
contributed music to Sunday worship services. This included many complete worship
services such as the early Christmas Eve service as well as Christmas Fest VI, the
annual Sunday School Christmas celebration and the Thinking Day Service 2010. We
also played at the annual Sunday school picnic in the spring, an opportunity to add
some secular music to our repertoire.
This coming year we are hoping to make some additions and alterations to our setup in
the sanctuary with the addition of an electronic drum set, carpeting of the band area,
hiding cables to clean up our "look" and moving the band mixing board to the back of
the main transept. We also are hoping to take part in more combined
contemporary/traditional services this year.
Christian churches have played a huge role in providing and training leadership talent,
especially in the area of music. A significant number of the biggest names in music,
from Baroque to jazz to rock got their start and /or honed their skills in Christian
churches. We feel very strongly that this training and proving ground be available here
at Erindale to all our members, especially our youth. To this end, Psalm 98's immediate
goals are to continue to work on our music and leadership style during worship
services; to continue to build our repertoire and to work at seamlessly integrating into
combined services.
We thank you all, especially Rob Anderson, the Worship Committee and Rev. Neil for
your support and encouragement over the past year as we continue to serve God in a
fashion that speaks to us. Psalm 98 is always interested in new members and
encourages anyone with some musical ability and proficiency (vocals and/or
instrumentation) to join. The program is available to adults and youth of secondary
school age or higher. Requests to join should be made to Jim Bright.

Often, someone who receives help from Erindale’s Benevolent Fund will thank me
profusely, as if I deserve the credit for helping them. I try to explain that this is not my
money I am giving-away, but the money donated by members of the Church--that the
helping hand is yours. Many do not get it, so I do not argue, but accept their thanks on
your behalf. Now I pass those thanks on to you.
In 2010, I dealt with some persons who have long-term problems; some whose plans
may or may not have turned-out; some couples where one has a genuine need while
the other is a bit of a parasite; some who were struggling with mental illness, and some
for whom it’s hard to tell what the story might be, because their English is so very poor.
23
In a word, each Benevolent client presents a challenge that is no less complex than the
many decades of their lifetime--and often the many decades of their troubles.
My part in this work, which I add to your giving, is to be in dialogue with each person
who contacts our Church, looking for help. Thank you for the opportunity to do that
work, within the total Ministry of our Church.
Once again, this year, I commend to you the work of Sarah McEwing, in our Office, who
fields countless calls and visits from our Benevolent clients, and always makes them feel
welcome, respected, and cared-for.
Blessings, Rev. Neil
Halton Presbytery
Halton Presbytery is one of six presbyteries which make up Hamilton Conference.
Halton Presbytery includes pastoral charges in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and in
the Waterdown, Carlisle, Milton, and Hornby communities. There are about thirty-five
pastoral charges serving about 9,600 members. Halton Presbytery is very active within,
and supportive of, Hamilton Conference, and we continue to be blessed with a large
number of skilled people volunteering their time to Presbytery.
A Presbytery is responsible for the basic oversight of the pastoral charges in the
Presbytery as well as the presbytery-accountable staff (members of Ordered Ministry
and Designated Lay Ministers). Membership in the Presbytery is made up of all Ministry
staff, all past Chairpersons of Presbytery, elected Lay Delegates from the pastoral
charges, approximately ten Members-at-Large who are appointed to carry out specific
responsibilities, and appropriate representatives from a number of church organizations.
The Presbytery is also responsible for students and candidates for Ministry within its
bounds, to supervise candidates, and to make recommendations to Conference for each
candidate upon completion of their educational requirements.
The Presbytery Full Court meets seven times per year to discuss policy matters as well
as to receive and act upon various reports and proposals. Presbytery Executive meets
ten or more times per year to facilitate ongoing administrative matters that require
Presbytery approval or action. During 2010, the Full Court met at Appleby, St. John’s,
Carlisle, St Stephen’s on-the-Hill, Erin Mills, St. Paul’s (Oakville), and Glen Abbey United
Churches.
Highlights and activities for 2010 by the Court or its Executive include:
 Receipt of, examination of, and appropriate action on reports from all Committees of
Presbytery.
24

Receipt of, examination of, and formal action and approval on all recommendations
made by the Pastoral Relations Committee with respect to Presbytery-accountable
staff.

Reviewed financial reports at each meeting, reviewed long range financial plans
(Finance and Property Committee), and approved the Presbytery budget in
November. The Mission Support Assessment was restored to its prior level of 2007.

The series of pre-Court dinner meetings called the Fourth at Four and designed to
provide information and educational speakers for Ministry personnel continued again
into 2010. The meetings are generally well attended and we have excellent speakers
and topics. The direction for Presbytery is to make Full Court meetings more
collegial and keep the regular business at Executive. In 2011, we will have 3 or 4
Full Court meetings with no business and the number of Fourth at Four meetings
will be reduced.

In addition, Presbytery every year considers and provides assistance to
congregations who need additional financial and/or people resources to carry out
their mission. Presbytery is fortunate that we have a number of strong churches that
can help provide such assistance.

This year, we continued to deal with encroachment by the Town of Oakville into
religious properties to (as they put it) keep a certain amount of uniformity in their
town called “Livable Oakville”. With the work by our Mission Development Officer,
financial support from Presbytery, and legal and planning support, the Town of
Oakville has changed their plan to allow greater flexibility in the use of religious
properties. This has been a good result for our faith communities.

John Hurst is currently the Treasurer for Halton Presbytery and for HUCEC, Mary
Patterson is a member of the Presbytery Pastoral Relations Committee along with
Eleanor McIntosh, and Walter Sowa continues to participate as time permits. Rev.
Neil Young remains active in Presbytery after terms at Conference and the National
Church ended. Marilyn Johnston and John Hurst are both members of National
Church committees. Erindale is represented well beyond its normal means in the
wider church and so you can see that we are a stronger congregation for that
participation.

Hamilton Conference conducts an Annual Meeting each year, and in 2010, this
meeting was held at the Elmira Community Centre. Rev. Neil Young, Walter Sowa
and John Hurst represented Erindale at this meeting. John Hurst was elected
President of Hamilton Conference for 2010. This entails a number of duties including
visits to all the Presbyteries. In 2010, I visited Bruce, Hamilton, Halton and Erie
Presbyteries. Next year I will complete my visits with Waterloo and Niagara
25
Presbyteries. My theme for 2010 is Hope, and during my visits, I have emphasized
the need to increase the number of people coming to regular worship.
Presbytery is a great place to contribute one’s talents to the greater Church, to have an
impact on and to assist in shaping our future, and to enjoy an immense learning
experience. If you have a passion for our United Church and for its future, you may well
enjoy volunteering your services to Presbytery. There are a number of self-employed
and retired persons who volunteer for Presbytery, but if you are younger, can find time
and wish to learn, this is a wonderful opportunity.

Erindale United Church Women Annual Report 2010
Purpose
To unite Women of the Congregation for the total Mission of the Church and to provide
a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in
Christian Witness, Study, Fellowship and Service.
Executive Committee Message
Erindale United Church Women - (U.C.W.) has been an active and vibrant group within
our church organization. Our success is the result of a very dedicated executive that
meets on the first Monday of each month. At the end of this report, you will see the
names of the members who give of their time and talents to make decisions that add to
the daily life of Erindale.
The following groups and their leaders meet in the McGill Room each month:
Mary and Martha Circle – Third Tuesday afternoon- Leader, Dianne Drennan
Friends in Faith - Third Tuesday evening- Leader, Sharon Carruthers
An invitation is extended to all women of the congregation to attend any meeting that
might be of interest to you. The U.C.W. activities are announced in the weekly Sunday
bulletin and in the Grapevine newsletter.
There were three gatherings in 2010 that had special programs of interest. In March,
we held our Annual Meeting followed by a presentation “Bicycles for Africa” presented
by Bev and Duncan Thacker from St. Bartholomew’s United Church, Brampton. In the
June Social gathering, Life Membership pins were presented to Clarine Dillon and Mary
Cochrane in recognition of their dedication to the life of the church. The guest speaker
was Brenda Simpson, Principal of the Sandy Francis Theological Centre, who spoke on
26
Native Spirituality. In November, the U.C.W. held a special concert of Christian
Instrumental Music performed by Eduard Klassen. This fundraising event was attended
by over 100 members of our congregation and other churches and the proceeds went
to Erindale United Church.
Through our various fundraising events, we are able to furnish and maintain the kitchen
and the McGill Room. The coffee and cookies that are enjoyed at coffee hour after
Sunday services are supplied by the U.C.W.
In 2010, the U.C.W. participated in the Erindale Kitchen Renovation project by
organizing a U.C.W. Kitchen Renovation Committee and purchasing all the new
appliances. The two groups also held a fundraiser called “Helping Hands” which helped
raise money for the kitchen renovation.
There are two special church events that are very important to the U.C.W. In May,
during coffee hour after the Family Day service, we ask for donations to purchase baby
food and formula for two local food banks. In October, the U.C.W. celebrates the
Fellowship of the Least Coin and donations collected after the Sunday service are given
to the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada to help support projects for women and
children around the world. We would like to thank the congregation for their generous
support at all U.C.W. events.
During 2010, there were disbursements of $1000 to the Erindale Benevolent Fund,
$1615 to Erindale United, $1000 to the United Church Mission and Service and $3386 to
various outreach programs within our community. In addition, the U.C.W. paid $8424
for the new kitchen appliances.
Our vision as United Church Women is: we believe that as Christian women of faith, we
nurture spirituality by reaching out with commitment and devotion to all God’s people in
promoting truth, justice, peace, caring, and sharing with respect for all in the
community and wider world; in loving God and others by living generously and giving
joyfully; and in affirming and strengthening ourselves creatively in study and witness
through music, laughter, and solitude (United Church Women Guidelines).

Roll Report
We have maintained the membership role for the year 2010. This year we looked over
both Members and Adherents rolls and tried to cull the roll. This resulted in a good
reduction in both lists and now our better represents the membership of the
congregation. We will continue this cull during the upcoming year so that the data
transferred to the new system will be as current as possible.

Erindale United Church
Congregational Meeting
March 7th, 2010 Minutes
1. The Erindale United Church Annual Congregational Meeting was called to order by
Reverend Neil Young. The meeting began as part of the order of service in the
Sanctuary and then continued in the Gardner Hall after the close of the worship
service.
2. Opening Statement: Reverend Neil Young opened the meeting as part of the
children’s story time, explaining the requirement to hold a general annual meeting to
review the business of the church. He explained how members of the congregation
would be chosen to lead the meeting.
3. Appointment of Chair: Motion by Doug Johnston that Brian Duckett be appointed
chair of meeting, seconded by Dick Carruthers. Carried.
4. Appointment of Secretary: Motion by Doug Johnston that Earle Laycock be
appointed meeting secretary seconded by Jim Bright. Carried.
5. Reflections from the Chair:
Council Chair, Brian Duckett, said that he and his wife Margaret have been members
of Erindale for over 13 years and have worked on Outreach projects, Worship and
Council. Over the last year, a significant achievement has been the transformation of
Erindale’s music program to a blended format. This was achieved under the
guidance of Steve Wykurz and Ralph Nott, chairs of Worship. We are blessed with
the leadership of our Director of Music Robert Anderson and the skills of the Senior
Choir, Psalm 98 and the Junior Choir under the direction of Violet Chepil.
Looking forward, Erindale is focusing on stewardship which includes a commitment
of time, money and talents to further God’s work. Erindale is blessed with a large
number of committed leaders and members. Erindale needs your commitment of
time and talent. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the life of the church.
Erindale needs your financial support to meet the expenses of the church. 2009
ended well due to expense reductions, contributions and a one-time special donation
but without these we would have ended with a break-even or possibly deficit
position. 2010 will be even more challenging in this regard. We can address this in
two ways: give more and/or encourage new membership.
Lastly, Brian reminded everyone that we are indeed blessed at Erindale and
encouraged everyone to take a moment to smile, recognizing the accomplishments
that we have made over the years.
30
6. Responsive Reading: Council Chair, Brian Duckett led the responsive reading
from Psalm 63.
7. Minister’s Reflections and Gospel Reading: Rev. Neil Young spoke about the
succession of positions within Erindale. Earl Cochrane was Erindale’s financial
“numbers guy” par excellence for a number of years and implemented the
concept of a three year plan for budgeting. When he resigned from this position,
many wondered how Earl could ever be replaced. Erindale was fortunate that
Rick Dawson stepped up to assume Earl’s duties. Rick has done a tremendous
job on building and improving what Earl had commenced. Another example was
Fran Morden and her culinary skills. Whenever any significant baking was
needed, Fran was there to produce the most remarkable goodies. However,
recently a function was held and wonderful cakes appeared, made not by Fran
Morden but by Donna Grundy. And so, the life of the church goes on just as
Jesus taught about the importance of bearing fruit.
Rev. Neil Young read the Gospel from Luke 13:1-9.
During the last ten years, we have not asked the congregation to increase
givings. This was accomplished by a number of initiatives including a good
tenant, Springfield Preparatory and Nursery School, conversion of expensive
electric heating to gas and careful management of expenses. But this era is
coming to a conclusion and Erindale will have to address increasing expenses.
8. Stewardship Message: Rev. Neil Young called the head of the Stewardship
Committee, Ian Nott, to speak about the challenges facing Erindale.
Ian Nott said that he had been leading the Stewardship program for the last four
years with help from a number of other members. In the March edition of the
Grapevine, the Stewardship Committee published an article discussing the issues
affecting stewardship at Erindale, reminding the reader that according to
theologian William Barclay, Jesus spoke about money more often than any other
subject except the Kingdom of God. Ian reminded us that “people don’t give to
budgets, people give to ideas.” Issues affecting Erindale include: a transitioning
society where a once dominant Christian-based society existed but now is
transforming into a multi-cultural/multi-faith community, an aging membership, a
general national reduction in United Church membership and the formation of
strong outreach programs locally, nationally and internationally. Erindale is “gift”
from those who preceded us and we should do the same for those that follow us.
Rev. Neil Young thanked Ian for his insights and called Paul Sabourin forward to
discuss the financial outlook for Erindale.
31
Paul Sabourin said that the givings have flat-lined over the last four or five years
but the budget has been balanced by careful expense control, prudent care of
our facilities and money saving ventures such as electrical to gas heating
conversion. Erindale has a good handle on the issues facing the congregation but
we need the understanding and support of the congregation to move forward.
Rev. Neil Young opened the floor to any questions that might be asked but no
questions were asked.
9. Offering: The Offering was taken.
10. Commissioning Time:
Appreciation of Staff: Brian Duckett thanked the staff of Erindale for their
leadership during the past year, including Rev. Neil Young as minister, Robert
Anderson as Director of Music, Sarah McEwing as Office Administrator, Violet
Chepil as Junior Choir Director and Stan Kluza of Cooksville Cleaning Services
and Carol Tranton, as Wedding Coordinator.

a. Financial Landscape: Paul Sabourin spoke with a slide presentation prepared by
Rick Dawson illustrating the financial state as of last year and the capital
expenditure plans for 2010. The congregation had an opportunity to ask questions
during the presentation.
The main source of revenue for the church comes from two sources: rental income
from Springfield Preparatory and Nursery School and offerings. Expenses include
salaries, building maintenance and utilities plus program funding. The problem
facing Erindale is that offering income has remained flat while expenses are
increasing. If this trend continues, it means that Erindale will not be able to
provide the programs and services that we have presently.
Erindale retains some money in a Capital Fund to maintain our facilities. The
Capital Fund is currently holding about $54,000 and the church has a capital
expenditure “wish list” of projects that is estimated to be about $468,000. Typical
capital expenditures in a year would be around $25,000 to $30,000 depending on
the items being addressed. There is a Manse Fund which currently holds about
$99,000 from the sale of the former church manse which was sold a number of
years ago. This fund is used as a buffer to provide funds for major projects such
as a new roof without requiring loans or interest payments. The cost of such
projects is usually paid back to the fund over a number of years. Finally an
Endowment Fund of about $50,000 (grown from zero in four years) is meant to
fund ongoing church programs through the interest generated.
This year, our budget contains a revenue line of $15,000 representing a
Stewardship Income item that has yet to be defined and implemented. This
revenue amount is necessary in order to meet our projected expenses for 2010.
We hold by faith that Erindale will meet this financial challenge.

Special Presentation: Dr. Walter Sowa was invited by Brian Duckett to speak about
the renewal of the United Church of Canada through spirituality groups. Walter is
on his fourth 3-year elected term on the General Council of the United Church of
Canada.
Walter spoke about recent United Church of Canada General Councils and the
discernment process to guide the church. He is trying to use the spirituality group
model that evolved here at Erindale United Church as an example of how this
could used by the national church to renew itself.
Walter said his proposal can be described as “holistic” in that it includes:
 guidance of the greatest commandment: ‘Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ (Matthew 22:37)
 encompassing scientific thought
 openness to learn about other beliefs after first understanding our own faith

New Business: None.
Motion to Adjourn: Duane McIlwraith moved seconded by Sandra Wiseman that
the meeting be adjourned. Carried.
Closing Remarks: Rev. Neil Young said that he had spoken with Walter Sowa about
his initiative. The renewal of our church is not based on money but on a spiritual
level concerning our relationship with God and with each other. Rev. Neil
remembered a former member of Erindale, Anson Hardy, who spent many hours
fixing various parts of the church. Half jokingly Rev. Neil told Anson one time that
“it is always great to see a man on his knees in church!” But to Anson, his ministry
and spiritual growth was achieved through his service of repair. Some view the
Finance and Property Committee work as distinct from spiritual experience but to
those involved, numbers can be worked with a spiritual frame of mind.
Closing Benediction: Rev. Neil Young closed the meeting with a prayer.
The meeting adjourned at 1:17 PM March 7 2010.
