But, then, this page gets labeled ‘Minister’s Report’. I suppose that my work at Erindale is, in some measure, tangled-up in all the things that happen in a year, and I certainly try to build ties with and be supportive to all the multitudes of Erindale people whose devotion shapes our church year. But still, I thought that maybe, this year, I could tell you about a few of my own highlights for 2009. It was a challenge and a joy to bid farewell to Sharon Dearie from the office, and welcome Sarah McEwing, and to bid farewell to Michael Coghlan from being Erindale’s long-serving Music Director, and to welcome Rob Anderson. I did something I’ve never done, and in 2009 preached eight times without notes or printed text, but just standing to the front of the dais. I invited Imam Omar Subedar to preach, and took 65 people to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was a fairly average year for Erindale, with 17 baptisms, 7 weddings and 15 funerals—but each of these events challenges me to connect with a whole family in the midst of the unfolding lives of all the people who make it up. Meantime, Emily, our middle daughter, went-off for her first year at university, and Kate & I travelled into the near-north of Ontario, visiting the area in which we had our churches 20 years ago. I did some work for-and-with the General Council Office of the United Church; Emmanuel College at the U. of T.; the Peel District School Board and with U.T.M., locally. I keep up contacts with a dozen local churches, and build multifaith relationships wherever I can. In short, my year has been like Erindale’s year: busy and productive. I thank God for it all. Blessings, Rev. Neil 5 Report of the Chair of Church Council Report of the Chair of Church Council We all lead busy lives. My wife Margaret and I find comfort in the Sunday services at Erindale. We enjoy the rich and varied music, the opportunities for prayer and communion and Reverend Neil’s sermons. Margaret and I were blessed thirteen years ago to find Erindale, the hidden jewel of a church and wonderful congregation. Our eldest son Chris and daughter-in-law Maria were married in the sanctuary by Reverend Kate seven years ago and their three children were baptized at Erindale. We are continually amazed at your generosity in tough times, how you step up when a need is identified. Sandy Lake gifts, Christmas baskets, Sunday School board games for Mission & Service fund, donations to The Open Door to honour the dedicated service of former Music Director Michael Coghlan, are just a few of the many examples. Erindale remains a busy church with an extensive and varied program. Givings are the main source of the revenue to pay our dedicated staff members and cleaners, maintain the building and grounds including the Memorial Gardens, pay the utilities and finance programs such as Worship and the outstanding music program, the excellent Sunday school as well as numerous Outreach programs. Please keep this in mind when you consider and decide on the amount of your financial support for Erindale, your church community. We welcome new people each week, visitors and guests, and most are smiling, responding to you! Keep up your good work. We are blessed to have a devoted and enthusiastic staff, Reverend Neil Young, Music Director Rob Anderson, Office Administrator Sarah McEwing, Wedding Consultant Carol Tranton and Junior Choir Director Violet Chepil. Cleaning services have been provided for many years by Stan Kluza and his hard working staff at Cooksville Cleaning Ltd. We enjoy an excellent relationship with our tenant of thirty-four years, Springfield Preparatory & Nursery School led by Janet Murphy. Please remember the teachers and students in your prayers. Looking back, this year, like any year has its painful memories. We bid a sad farewell to very-long-service members of Erindale, Jack Bannerman and Wally Oughtred, and to Reverend Lindy Brown, a long-time spiritual leader for this congregation and our community. 6 There were also new beginnings; we welcomed Music Director Robert Anderson. As a result of Rob’s efforts along with the hard work and dedication provided by the Senior Choir, Psalm 98 and the Junior Choir, each week we experience an eclectic music program, something for every member of our congregation. Looking forward, we know that 2010 will bring many challenges; our congregation is not sheltered from the difficult world economic situation. Stewardship will be a continuing preoccupation. Undoubtedly we will consider a campaign to address capital needs, the projector and screens, improvements to the sound system and other enhancements for the Sanctuary, kitchen renovations and replacement of the church organ. My first year as Chair of Council has been very busy and stressful at times. I appreciate very much the dedicated and devoted Council members that work on your behalf. It is a pleasure for me to work with them. Please take a moment to recognize and thank the many volunteers that make Erindale United Church, your church, what it is. Consider a role for yourself if you are not already involved. Thank you all! Brian Duckett, Chair of Council 7 Reports of Standing Committees Christian Development Christian Development Mission To develop and sustain a nurturing environment for Christian Education programs that provide knowledge and understanding of God’s word and meet the needs of all members and segments of the Erindale family and community. Mandate To develop the policies and programs for Christian education within Erindale, according to United Church standards, and to ensure there are resources, including financial, to carry out these programs with approval of Council. This includes support and guidance for Sunday School programs and teachers, the Crib and Toddler room, adult education, youth ministry and any opportunities for spiritual growth. Achievements in 2009: The Sunday School program has been ably and enthusiastically overseen by Sunday School coordinator Lynn Norris and a dedicated group of teachers and parent volunteers. Thanks to all for your wonderful work. The Sunday School classes meet during Sunday worship services and the teaching encourages the learning of the bible. The Sunday School continues to enjoy the two classrooms off Gardner Hall as well as a room in the east wing that is used by the Springfield Preparatory School during the week. Thank you to Bill McIntosh and the F&P committee for their work and acting as a liaison with SPS. This past year included the participation of the students and teachers in special worship services including Christmas Fest and a youth led service on Mothers’ Day. The graduation service and picnic was well attended and enjoyed by many. Special fundraising for United Church Mission and Service Fund was a great success. Please see Sunday School report following. Thanks to Terry Wykurz for her direction and her great volunteers in caring for the youngest members of Erindale. The Spirituality Group met eight times during the fall session. Approximately ten members of the congregation were challenged on what it means to be Christian in today’s world. Thanks to Ruth Nott for organizing and leading this study. “Living the Questions” sessions included topics such as “Debunking the Rapture” to the “Prophetic Jesus” among others. 8 early worship service on Christmas Eve, to the delight of the congregation. Thank you Doug. Please see report following. Sunday School The Erindale United Church Sunday School had another successful year in 2009, with just under 50 children and youth registered. The school was coordinated by Lynn Norris and classes were ably led by superb ‘teaching teams’ for each grade level: Crib and Toddler Room Terry Wykurz, Charlotte Duncan, Pat Jenkins, Joyce Murdoch, Marilyn Hurst, Heather Lockhart Kindergarten Eleanor McIntosh, Jane Shores, Cathy Stone Primary Michelle Robbins (January to June), Jutta Argao, Lynn Norris Junior Karen Bright, Cynthia Carr, Alan Schaubel (January to June) Youth Jim Bright (January to June), Ralph Nott, Craig Laferriere The Seasons of the Spirit curriculum continued to provide lectionary-based programming for the Sunday School, and provided the children with a lesson that generally follows the sermon topic delivered during Worship Service. Following the children’s story time in Worship Service, the Sunday School classes gathered in Gardner Hall for their own Worship Table, followed by music led by Jim Bright from January to June. From September to December, the children’s music was led by Violet Chepil, our Junior Choir leader. The children perform some of the songs they learned at Worship Services throughout the year. Following music time, the children divide into their class levels for lessons, activities, crafts and discussion. Achievements in 2009 the Sunday School on Mothers Day, May 10th, the annual Sunday School Graduation and Family Picnic in June. Summer Sunday School ran through the month of August thanks to Sarah McEwing and Eleanor Lobo-Lee who volunteered to teach most Sundays in August! In place of the traditional Halloween Party, in 2009 the Sunday School enjoyed a Thanksgiving celebration on October 11th that featured a skit by the youth class, games and treats. -a-thon fund-raiser that the Sunday School sponsored over the past two years, we tried something new this year – a Board-Game-a-thon to raise funds for the United Church Mission and Service Fund. Children and youth raised $1,900 for M&S, and enjoyed an afternoon of board games in Gardner Hall. To finish off the year, Christmas Fest was held following Worship Service and a light lunch on December 20th. Each class performed songs or a skit, and the Junior Choir performed as well. Psalm 98 provided music and carol singing throughout the concert. 9 A special thanks to all of the Sunday School teachers for dedicating their time, energy and enthusiasm; to Jim Bright and Violet Chepil for leading the Sunday School music time; and to all of the students who make our Sunday School program an important part of Erindale’s worship. Erindale Chancel Players The Erindale Chancel Players had the pleasure of presenting another of Rev. Neil’s plays at the early service on Christmas Eve. Wenceslas described events around the Good King’s life and how his legacy influenced some ordinary people many years later in war torn Prague. It left the congregation with the Christmas message of what can we do to help others today. The play was a major challenge for ECP as it not only consisted of a large cast, but there was only one rehearsal when everybody was present. The players include: Nicholas Argao, Karen Bright, Russell Bright, Brian Crombie, Jonathon Crombie, Natasha Crombie, Brian Duckett, Garry Jenkins, Doug Johnston, Marilyn Johnston, Craig Laferriere, Joseph Laferriere, Jonah Lobo Lee, Claudette Neita, and Ruth Nott. Support for audio/visual manipulation and music came from Matthew Dawson, Rick Dawson and Jim Bright respectively. Members of the Erindale Chancel Players also contributed minor “bits” to other services during the year. The series consisted of five weekly lectures followed by coffee and after the third lecture, we provided a light lunch. On average about 75 attended the lectures each week. Although attendance was down this year, with the continued help given to us by our congregation we were able to raise $2229.10. $979.10 of this was for refreshments and the luncheon revenue. $1250.00 of this was for rental of our facilities. Once again we thank Dianne and David Drennan for supervision of the parking lot and George Beagley for looking after audio visual. Next year is the 25th anniversary of the Perspectives lecture series and we have been asked to host the series again. The dates for the 2010 lecture series will be Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Nov. 4th. Acknowledgements The committee members named in this report worked long and hard to complete the accomplishments listed above along with many others too numerous to mention, but also requiring time, expertise, knowledge, sweat, muscle and a good dose of humour. The recurring daily, weekly and monthly tasks are not listed in the accomplishments above but they kept the lights on, the church heated, staff paid and the building in good repair. The committee members lifted, built, carried, painted, cleaned, wrote 14 reports, entered figures, paid bills, built budgets, developed policies, read meters, consulted, counted money, recorded givings, drafted policies, attended meetings, changed sign messages and organized programs. They are an outstanding group of volunteers! In addition, other members of the congregation stepped forward on numerous occasions to share their particular skills and augment our numbers. Thank you for your support, it is greatly appreciated!! Contacts: Bill McIntosh, Chair and Rick Dawson, Vice Chair Ministry & Personnel Mission The Ministry & Personnel Committee provides a confidential setting for consultation with and support and assessment of all staff and contract personnel at Erindale United Church except for caretaking contractor who reports to Finance & Property. Mandate The M&P Committee meets with staff, contract personnel and church groups to ensure objectives are being met as defined by Church Council. The committee proposes the annual salary and benefits budget for staff and contract employees in accordance with United Church Head Office guidelines. Individual remuneration is discussed annually with each staff member and contract employee. Achievements in 2009 A new job description and training program schedule for the position of Office Administrator were finalized and approved by Council. A new job description was written by Council and M & P for the position of Director of Music. In January, a lunch and a presentation were made to honour Sharon Dearie on her retirement. Sharon received a new camera of her choice. After receiving donations from the congregation for three Sundays, the camera and reception were paid for and a cheque for $225.00 was presented to Sharon from funds collected in excess of costs. Sarah McEwing was officially hired as Office Administrator upon completion of her three month probationary training on March 1st. Violet Chepil’s contract as Junior Choir Leader was renewed and extended to June 2010. Meetings of the M & P committee were held as required throughout the year and as is the custom, no minutes were published. The committee as a whole met with Rev. Neil to review his usually well prepared and detailed Accountability Report. Rev. Neil’s request to make changes to his job description and to keep it on the church office computer was complied with. 15 A major bump in the road came on April 13th when Michael Coghlan resigned as Director of Music after nineteen years of dedicated service including extraordinary Sunday music as well as wedding and funeral services, his organizing of Jazz at Erindale and his huge contribution to the Christmas Basket Project. Michael requested instead of a retirement gift that a collection be taken from the congregation and a cheque for the monies collected be presented to The Open Door. A grand sum of $2,041.00 was presented in his name to The Open Door charity. Performance reviews were conducted by M & P teams in accordance with United Church guidelines with all members of staff. The major project for the year came to a most satisfactory conclusion due to the efforts of the ad hoc committee formed to find a new Director of Music and to write an updated job description. The committee consisted of members of M & P, members of the Senior Choir and members of Council. Many long hours of work on the job description, interviews and follow ups by this terrific committee resulted in the hiring of Rob Anderson as our new Director of Music starting in September. Rob has quickly made his presence felt in a very positive manner. As Chair of M & P, I would like to express my sincere praise and gratitude to the members of M & P and of Council who rose to the occasion when their time and talents were required. Taped occasional Sunday morning services for Erindale members on request for those who may be shut-ins, or were simply unable to attend and missed a good sermon. Purchased $300 worth of Multiple Sclerosis Carnations for distribution on Mothers' Day to the Mothers of Erindale. 16 Continued the ‘Sponsor a Bulletin’ drive to offset the cost of the bulletin covers and raise funds for the Benevolent Fund. Held the sale of stained glass artwork ‘Extravaganza in Stained Glass’ by Jim Watson, in the founding Churches and raised over $150 in the Fall for the Deacon’s Cupboard. Raised $985 at the 8th Annual Poinsettia Tea in December, to complete and ship 38 boxes of over $5,000 value in gifts we were able to send to the children of Sandy Lake Reserve. Transportation of the Christmas gifts to Red Lake was courtesy of a favourable rate from the Manitoulin Transport at a savings of over $250. We were able to get air shipments from Red Lake into Sandy Lake from Wasaya Airways Ltd., at a savings of $500. Once again the CAW and the Toronto Trades Council contributed $750 to make our Sandy Lake program a success. Laura Turner and Nicole Hansen, organized the distribution of over 50 Christmas Baskets to families in the Mississauga area, through the “Open Door”, with help and thanks from you the members of Erindale. Conservatively valued at $4,500. Thank you, Erindale!. Collected 72 pairs of eyeglasses for Lenscrafters. They are cleaned and labeled for use in areas of the world in need. The Sunday Food collection was taken regularly by Jim Watson to the Deacon’s Cupboard at an estimated value of $1,500 for the year. Jim Watson, Dave Gorman, Marilyn Hurst and Doug Patterson volunteered at the Deacon’s Cupboard, with Jim Watson now a Core Member of the Deacon’s Cupboard leadership group. Richard Hancock championed the “Open Stage” Coffee House on last Saturday evening of each odd # month – giving congregational and surrounding communities’ developing musicians a place to play to an audience. Outreach supported a tremendous effort made by Kaitlyn Venkatarangam to personally deliver development aid to schools and communities in the Dominican Republic over the summer. 2009 Deacon’s Cupboard Report Over $78,000 retail equivalent of supplies given out (up 13% over 2008). 2058 Guest visits (up 25% over 2008). 33 Tons of supplies given out to guests (up 13% over 2008) Erindale’s “Deacon’s Cupboard Dinner” on November 28th with 46 guests and followed up by entertainment at the Open Stage Coffee House.. Contact Richard Kitney Board of Trustees Mission & Mandate The Board of Trustees of Erindale United Church holds all the property of our congregation for the use and benefit of the congregation as part of the United Church. As a result, the Board of Trustees deals with property issues that would normally be associated with ownership although the day to day responsibility of property management belongs to Finance and Property Committee. 2009 Highlights We welcomed two new members in 2009. Doug Johnston and Hugh McFarlane will bring valuable expertise to the Board. Considerable up-grades were made to the Memorial Gardens, its twin garden to the left of the Sanctuary and in the flower beds at the front of the church. Sprinkler Systems were installed in both gardens and in the lawn and flower beds at the front of the church. Numerous discussions were held with Credit Valley Golf Club on the swap of a small parcel of land at the front of the church. The objective is to obtain ownership of the portion of the front parking lot that is currently owned by the 18 Golf Course and in return give the golf course a small slice of land along the fence. A preliminary risk assessment matrix was developed and shared with Church Council and the various Committees for their attention and action. Plans for 2010 Conclude discussions and legal agreements with Credit Valley on the swap of the land at the front of the church. We plan to undertake a new survey of our property and to install appropriate property markers along the perimeter where such a marker or fence does not presently exist. Work will progress on risk assessment and we will work with the various committees to ensure priority risk areas are adequately addressed. Work will continue in assessing the status of our church archives and developing a plan as required. Neil Young Contact Ralph Nott, Chair email: rnott1741@rogers.com 20 Senior Choir Mandate To provide musical leadership for the congregation of Erindale United Church during worship services and to offer opportunities for a variety of musical and cultural activities in the spirit of fellowship and Christian ideals. Introduction This was a year of transition for the senior choir. After 19 years of dedicated leadership, Michael Coghlan tendered his resignation on Monday April 13, but remained in place until his last service conducted on Sunday June 14, 2009. Supply organists (mainly Stephen Hurley) played for the rest of June and the month of August. On September 1, our new Director of Music, Robert Anderson, was appointed and began conducting services beginning September 6, 2009. Achievements in 2009 Under Michael Coghlan’s leadership, the choir presented some pre-service rehearsals of new hymns with the gathering congregation. At 2 pm. on Sunday March 1, with the Outreach committee, the choir cosponsored the “Jazz at Erindale” concert featuring the “Mike Cadό Tentet”, a tribute band honouring Phil Nimmons, founder of “Nimmons 'n Nine”. On Sunday March 8, Michael arranged for “The Rhythm of the Drum” to be presented during the worship service. Under Rob Anderson’s leadership, a new Thursday evening rehearsal format was adopted with the choir meeting in the sanctuary. New choral music was introduced for the Sunday services, adding an introit, a choral response to prayer, and a variety of closing Benedictions. New members were recruited for the choir, and we were delighted by the welcome return of some former members. On frequent occasions, blended music services with Psalm 98 and the Junior Choir were presented. Special music was prepared for the Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Advent and Christmas Services. We note that on Remembrance Day Sunday, Oksana Manchur played the trumpet, and Jim Caddis played the bagpipes. We also welcomed several guest singers from the St. Catharines/Welland area to our choir for both the Remembrance Day service, and the special Service of Lessons and Carols at the end of Advent. Some selections of a cappella singing (voices only without accompaniment) were included as part of the musical offerings. On Sunday December 13, the choir held its annual “Circles and Squares” Christmas bake sale, raising $850 for the general church revenue. The Choir Fund 21 In 2008, the executive of the choir was reorganized, eliminating the formal position of Choir Treasurer. The choir’s separate bank account was closed and its balance of funds (produced from previous fundraising activities for music within the church) was transferred to the Church and held as a special designated “Choir Fund”, jointly supervised by the choir and the Worship committee. After the appointment of our new music director, the choir approved money to be spent for obtaining organist copies of Voices United, paying for the cost of badly needed repairs to the church organ, replacing 35 anthem folders for the choir, and purchasing a set of 35 Oxford Church anthem books with flexible scorings of harmonies (from 2 to 4 parts). This fund will be fully spent and closed by mid 2010. In accordance with Church accounting procedures, any funds raised by the choir in the current or future years will be deposited into general church revenue. Future Plans for 2010 The choir is committed to more rigorous rehearsals so that a wider variety of music can be presented during worship services. The choir looks forward to a year of significant growth, in which the strength of the choir will be increased. We also look forward to more joint activities and concerts with the choirs of our neighbouring churches in Mississauga. Special recognition is given this year to Fran Morden, Laura 22 Turner and Dora Williams for organizing the choir’s “Circles and Squares” bake sale on December 13th. Contact: Fraser Code, President Erindale Worship Band- Psalm 98 Psalm 98 is the Erindale United Worship Band. The band consists of youth members at the secondary school level as well as adult members of the Erindale congregation. We perform mainly contemporary Christian worship music with some forays into gospel and traditional hymns with a contemporary styling. This past year Psalm 98 routinely contributed music to Sunday worship services. This included many complete worship services such as the early Christmas Eve service as well as Christmas Fest V, the annual Sunday School Christmas celebration and the Thinking Day Service 2009. We did manage to make one “road trip” to play a Sunday worship service at Windermere United Church. Thanks Rev. Kate for your hospitality, we had a hoot! Plans for 2010 The last quarter of 2009 has been an exciting time for us. Rob Anderson our new music director has brought renewed interest in the music program here at Erindale. Work has already begun in collaboration with Rob to further explore a combined traditional/contemporary worship format. We are studying how we might bring the choir and Psalm 98 closer together, perhaps even collaborating on some pieces. Currently we are entertaining several invitations to other churches and shall accept some invites as time allows. We look forward to 2010 with much anticipation. Christian churches have played a huge role in providing and training leadership talent, especially in the area of music. A significant number of the biggest names in music, from Baroque to jazz to rock got their start and /or honed their skills in Christian churches. We feel very strongly that this training and proving ground be available here at Erindale to all our members, especially our youth. To this end, Psalm 98's immediate goals are to continue to work on our music and leadership style during worship services; to continue to build our repertoire and to work at seamlessly integrating into combined services. We thank you all, especially Rob Anderson, the Worship Committee and Rev. Neil for your support and encouragement over the past year as we continue to serve God in a fashion that speaks to us. Psalm 98 is always interested in new members and encourages anyone with some musical ability and proficiency (vocals and/or instrumentation) to join. The program is available to adults and youth of secondary school age or higher. Requests to join should be made to Jim Bright or Nancy Dawson. Choose any 5 from the above list, and you will have the kind of constellation of needs/circumstances usually present in the life of any client who comes looking for help from the Benevolent Fund. Peoples’ troubles are never easy to describe, and rarely amenable to being resolved, by the time they have come to the point of asking for help from the church. By contrast, sometimes those seeking help from other resources are dealing with specific needs and circumstances. For instance, clients at the ‘Deacon’s Cupboard’, which we support, are often new Canadians who are just trying to get on their feet. It is the case, over the years, that some clients for the Benevolent Fund have managed to climb out of their troubles, and move-on in life. It does happen. For others, even if I had ten times or fifty times the resources to give-way, it would not resolve their issues—though it might ease their circumstances. So, we continue with the work. You give generously. Sarah, in the office, fields hundreds of phone calls and visits. I use the Fund to help where we can. Our clients know that, at this Church, they will receive some attention, and some help. Blessings, Rev. Neil Halton Presbytery Halton Presbytery is one of six presbyteries which make up Hamilton Conference. Halton Presbytery includes pastoral charges in Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington and in the Waterdown, Carlisle, Milton and Hornby communities. There are about thirty-five pastoral charges serving about 10,000 members. Halton Presbytery is very active within, and supportive of, Hamilton Conference, and we are blessed with a large number of skilled people volunteering their time to Presbytery. A Presbytery is responsible for the basic oversight of the pastoral charges in the Presbytery as well as the presbytery-accountable staff (members of Ordered Ministry and Designated Lay Ministers). Membership in the Presbytery is made up of all Ministry staff, elected Lay Delegates from the pastoral charges, approximately ten Members-atLarge who are appointed to carry out specific responsibilities, and appropriate representatives from a number of church organizations. The Presbytery is also responsible for students and candidates for Ministry within its bounds, to supervise 25 candidates, and to make recommendations to Conference for each candidate upon completion of their educational requirements. The Presbytery Full Court meets seven times per year to discuss policy matters as well as to receive and act upon various reports and proposals. Presbytery Executive meets ten or more times per year to facilitate ongoing administrative matters that require Presbytery approval or action. During 2009, the Full Court met at Eden, St. Stephen’s on-the-Hill, Applewood, Maple Grove, Trinity, Erindale, and St. Stephen (Burlington) United Churches. Erindale once again stepped into the breach when called upon and hosted the October meeting on an emergency basis with complete aplomb. Thank you to all the Erindale volunteers (and particularly the Erindale UCW) who pulled this off so well. Highlights and activities for 2009 by the Court include: Receipt of, examination of, and appropriate action on reports from all Committees of Presbytery. Receipt of, examination of, and formal action and approval on all recommendations made by the Pastoral Relations Committee with respect to Presbytery-accountable staff. Reviewed financial reports at each meeting, reviewed long range financial plans in October, and approved the Presbytery budget in November. The series of pre-Court dinner meetings called Fourth at Four and designed to provide information and educational speakers for Ministry personnel continued into 2009. The meetings in 2009 have been well attended and there were a number of excellent speakers. In addition, Presbytery every year considers and provides assistance to congregations who need additional financial and/or people resources to carry out their mission. We have been blessed that a number of congregations have successfully undertaken massive capital campaigns themselves to fund needed expansion and renovation. This year, we are dealing with encroachment by the Town of Oakville into religious properties to (as they put it) keep a certain amount of uniformity in their town. They call it “Liveable Oakville”, but it has become a euphemism for keeping the less wellto-do out of sight. John Hurst is currently the Treasurer for Halton Presbytery and for HUCEC, Mary Patterson is a member of the Presbytery Pastoral Relations Committee along with Eleanor McIntosh and Walter Sowa remains active at Presbytery and the National Church. Rev. Neil Young is active in Presbytery, Conference and General Council 26 committees. Marilyn Johnston and John Hurst are both members of National Church committees. Erindale is represented well beyond its normal means in the wider church and so you can see that we are a stronger congregation for that participation. Hamilton Conference conducts an Annual General Meeting and in 2009, this meeting was held at the Fergus Community Centre. Rev. Neil Young, Walter Sowa and John Hurst represented Erindale at this meeting. John Hurst was elected PresidentDesignate of Hamilton Conference in 2009 and will serve as Conference President from May 2010 through May 2011. The United Church had its 40th triennial General Council meeting in 2009 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Both Walter Sowa and John Hurst were honoured to be elected as Commissioners and both attended General Council 40. Presbytery is a great place to contribute ones talents to the greater Church, to have an impact in and to assist in shaping our future and to enjoy an immense learning experience. If you have a passion for our United Church and for its future, you may well enjoy volunteering your services to Presbytery. There are a number of self-employed and retired persons who volunteer for Presbytery, but if you are younger, can find time and wish to learn, this is a wonderful opportunity. Presbytery Representatives: Mary Patterson, Walter Sowa and John Hurst Presbytery Member-at-Large: Eleanor McIntosh Report prepared by John Hurst United Church Women Purpose To unite Women of the Congregation for the total Mission of the Church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian Witness, Study, Fellowship and Service. Executive Committee Message Erindale United Church Women - (U.C.W.) has been an active and vibrant group within our church organization. Our success is the result of a very dedicated executive that meets on the first Monday of each month. At the end of this report, you will see the names of the members who give of their time and talents to make decisions that add to the daily life of Erindale. 27 The following groups and their leaders meet in the McGill Room each month: Mary and Martha Circle – Third Tuesday afternoon- Leader, Dianne Drennan Friends in Faith- Third Tuesday evening- Leader, Sharon Carruthers There are three gatherings per year held in the church that have special programs of interest. In 2009, the gatherings were held in February, June and November. In February, we held our Annual Meeting followed by a presentation “Thinking about the Northwest Passage” given by Duane and Tom McIllwraith, with approximately 60 members of the congregation attending. In June 2009, Life Membership pins were presented to Barbara Prest and Anne Lyon in recognition of their dedication to the life of the church and a presentation was made to Sharon Dearie in recognition of her retirement as Office Administrator. The guest speaker was Suzanne Sweatman who related her personal stories entitled “To Honduras with Love”. In November, the theme of our gathering was “Approaching Advent”. An invitation is extended to all women of the congregation to attend any meeting that might be of interest to you. The U.C.W. activities are announced in the weekly Sunday bulletin and in the Grapevine newsletter. Through our fundraising events such as the Rummage Sale and the Fall Fundraising event (Cheese/Muffin/Fruit Cake sale), we are able to furnish and maintain the kitchen and the McGill Room. The coffee and cookies that are enjoyed at coffee hour after Sunday services are supplied by the U.C.W. There are two special church events that are very important to the U.C.W.. In May, during coffee hour after the Family Day service, we ask for donations to purchase baby food and formula for two local food banks. In October, the U.C.W. celebrates the Fellowship of the Least Coin and donations collected after the Sunday service are given to the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada to help support projects for women and children around the world. We would like to thank the congregation for their generous support at all U.C.W. events. During 2009, there were disbursements of $6651.00 to various outreach programs within our community and our church, including $2345.00 to Erindale United Church and $1000.00 to Mission and Service. In October 2009, the Halton Presbytery held their meeting at Erindale. Our U.C. W. provided dinner for 41 participants and coffee for approximately 60. Our vision as United Church Women is: we believe that as Christian women of faith, we nurture spirituality by reaching out with commitment and devotion to all God’s people in promoting truth, justice, peace, caring, and sharing with respect for all in the community and wider world; in loving God and others by living generously and giving joyfully; and in affirming and strengthening ourselves creatively in study and witness through music, laughter, and solitude (United Church Women Guidelines). 28 Report prepared by: Cheryl Salkey, Co-ordinator Erindale United Church Women: 2009 Executive Co-ordinator Secretary Treasurer Church Council Representatives Past President Cheryl Salkey Pat Viau Norma Macintyre Marilyn Hurst, Ruth Nott Eleanor McIntosh Committees of Executive Kitchen Convenor Programme McIntosh, Publicity Receptions Anita Kelly Ruth Nott, Susan Lyons, Eleanor Joyce Murdoch Olive Grieve, Sharon Carruthers (contact), Joyce Murdoch, Susan Lyons, Marlene Thompson Marilyn Hurst (contact), Clarine Dillion, Olive Grieve, Dianne Drennan Susan Lyons (contact), Dianne Drennan, Joan Nixon Dorothy Weston Rummage Sale Social Committee Visitation/New Members: Unit Leaders Friends in Faith Mary and Martha Circle Sharon Carruthers Dianne Drennan Roll We have maintained the membership role for the year 2009. Reflections from the Chair: Council Chair, Marilyn Johnston, spoke about her extensive involvement at Erindale United which allowed her to participate in the life of the congregation in a number of capacities. Marilyn joined Erindale when Rev. Neil Young began his ministry 27 years ago. Marilyn said that the strength of Erindale is in the people. Marilyn thanked Rev. Neil Young for ten years of leadership and stability. She also thanked the people of Erindale, for their support and leadership. The church is now examining important issues concerning worship and the music program offered at Erindale. Marilyn said that it is important to take time to make the right decisions so that we, the congregation of Erindale, are happy with the result. Marilyn stated that this will be her last term as Council Chair. b. Minister’s Report: Rev. Neil Young thanked Marilyn Johnston for her leadership as Council chair and noted that the strength of a congregation often rests in large part with the leadership of a few key people. As he viewed the members attending this meeting, he stated that he could see new people becoming ready to assist in the leadership of the congregation. Rev Neil chose to focus on the participation of Erindale in the wider church. Erindale is one of about 2400 congregations nationwide, a member of Halton Presbytery which is part of the Hamilton Conference. There are 30 conferences comprising the United Church of Canada. Members of our congregation participating in the wider church include: Walter Sowa a member of Erindale has been chair of Halton Presbytery and has been a member of the General Council executive which oversees the operation of the United Church of Canada. John Hurst as treasurer of Halton Presbytery and has been chair of Halton Presbytery Mary Patterson is a representative of Presbytery and works in pastoral relations Eleanor McIntosh is a representative of Presbytery Marilyn Johnston is a member of the Pension Plan Advisory Board of the United Church Pension Plan Rev. Neil Young is on the national finance committee for the United Church of Canada. He is active in various faith communities locally, is a member of the Peel District School Board Faith Forward advisory committee and is on the Board of Regents of Victoria University, University of Toronto. 32 Reverend Neil said that at a recent Conference meeting, he noted that Erindale held 9 out of 54 representative positions to various General Council committees based on 250 churches in the Conference. This is a remarkable commitment of Erindale talent to the church at large. 7. a. Acceptance of Reports of Standing Committees: Motion by Barbara Manchur and seconded by Tom McIlwraith to accept the reports of the standing committees, pages 8 to 22, as published. Carried. b. Acceptance of Benevolent Fund, Halton Presbytery, Congregational Roll Report: On page 29 section Roll, the number of “Members removed by death” for 2008 should read “5” instead of “1”. Acceptance of United Church Women’s (UCW) Report: Motion by Cheryl Salkey and seconded by Sharon Dearie to accept the UCW report as published on pages 27 and 28. Carried. d. (i) Acceptance of Financial Statements: Rick Dawson reviewed the financial statements for 2008. Erindale was $5000 over budget on givings. Springfield Preparatory and Nursery School contributed $927 more than budgeted because the new classrooms were brought into use earlier than anticipated. There was a surplus of $34,212 which will be used to pay for future capital expenditures, repay the Manse Fund and build the Endowment Fund. Erindale does not budget capital expenditures directly and uses surplus to cover major capital costs. Some of the expenditures included: installation of new electrical feed to church, painting exterior of church, removal of tree over Gardner Hall, installation of exterior storage and garbage bins, restoration of the front doors and general repairs of church. Over $20,000 was spent on non-classroom work. The new classrooms off Gardner Hall were completed with a total cost of $44,000 of which Springfield Preparatory and Nursery School paid $17,000 upfront. $27,000 is the cost to Erindale which will be recovered by rental fees over a five year period from the school. $26,508 is owed in repayment to the Manse Fund which originally held $117,475. Rick noted that Church funds are not affected by the economic turmoil since we use treasury bills for our longer term funds. Rick reviewed the budget for 2009 including expected revenues and expenditures including: Church Watch computer upgrade, computer network installation, electrical work, audio visual enhancements and exterior window upgrades. 33 Motion by Rick Dawson and seconded by Jim Bright to accept the printed financial statements for 2008 as audited by Withey Addison LLP and published. Carried. Motion by Rick Dawson and seconded by Dave Drennan to accept the 2009 Budget as published. Carried. d. (ii) Appointment of Auditor for 2009: Motion by Barbara Manchur and seconded by Rick Dawson that Withey Addison LLP be appointed as auditor for 2009. Carried. 8. Council Organization and Nominations: Marilyn Johnston stated that each committee can send two representatives to Council. Marilyn presented a list of Council nominations and members. Changes noted for Table of Organization: i) Sandra Wiseman should be removed as a Congregational Care representative to Council ii) position of Church Secretary should be renamed to Office Administrator iii) Jim Bright should be retained as the Christian Development representative to Council iv) add Ralph Nott as Worship Chair and representative to Council v) add Carol Tranton as staff Wedding Coordinator and vi) change title to year “2009”. Good luck to Brian Duckett in his new role as Council Chair. Good luck to all as Marilyn relinquished her position as Council Chair and Chair of the Congregational meeting. 10. Minute Person: Brian Duckett thanked Marilyn Johnston for her work as Council Chair and wished her well in her “retirement”. The church is in good shape due in part to her work and leadership. There are issues to be dealt with but the fundamentals are strong. Brian presented Marilyn with a small gift on behalf the congregation. 11.
