Course Description: This pre-calculus course is intended to prepare students for the calculus
course. We shall cover topics such as graphs and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions,
trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities and equations. In addition, the course provides
student with mathematical skills, knowledge, and analytical proficiency essential to succeed in
calculus courses.
Evaluation Criteria (Grading):

Quizzes: There are 3 in-class quizzes and each quiz worth 2% of your final grade. All
quizzes will be counted and there will be NO make up quizzes for absent students for any
reason. The quiz dates are fixed as follows:

Mini Exams:
Please be notified that all Mini Exams will be counted. It is your responsibility to schedule your
mini-exam. Please refer to the separate mini-exams notice for more details.
Please be notified that all Mini Exams will be counted (Trial 1 >= 60% = 3 marks, Trial 2 >= 60%
= 2 marks, 0 marks otherwise unless you have a total of 70% or more in the two trials then you
will get 1 point) (you should schedule your test time in advance)

Class Participation: This is NOT assigned for attendance but for active participation in
class. More details will be provided later on regarding this part of your grade.
Midterm Exam: The midterm exam will take place on Saturday April 5, 2008 - Time and
location will be announced later.
Final Exam: The final exam will take place on Tuesday June 10, 2008 - Time will be
announced later. This exam is comprehensive and worth 50% of your course grade.
Regulations:

Attendance is a very important factor in your performance and will be taken from the first day
of classes. Please note the following:

First day of classes is February 24, 2008.

Last day of classes is June 5, 2008.

University regulations state that student’s absence must not exceed 25% (7 lectures) – This
includes absence for sickness, medical appointments … etc.

Your teacher will send you a warning from his/her UQ e-mail to your QU-email when your
absence rate gets close to 20% (about 5 lectures) – This warning is considered official.

A student with absence rate exceeding 25% (8 lectures or more):
1) Will not be allowed to take the final exam, and if such a student shows up for the final
exam, his/her exam copy will not be graded.
2) Will however be allowed to attend the remaining lectures and even to take in class
quizzes and midterm exams.
3) Your teacher will send you a final notice from his/her UQ e-mail to your QU-email when
your absence rate exceeds 25% (8 or more lectures) – This notice is considered official.
