Article Courtesy of: Chris Cavanagh - Whittlesea Leader Sessional Dance at Marymede Catholic College We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer sessional dance to Year 7-12 students at Marymede Catholic College in 2016. Classes will be offered in many styles such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary and Ballet for Secondary students of all levels from Beginner through to Advanced. The aim of the lessons will be to increase student’s coordination, flexibility and strength as dancers in a fun and friendly environment with the intention of developing a Dance Program at Marymede. Sessional dance will be at an extra cost to families in the same way that instrumental music is offered at the College. The cost is affordable and much cheaper than classes in dance studio settings outside of school. Students will be charged $10.00 a week and be expected to pay up front for the Semester. Students involved in sessional dance classes will have the opportunity to perform at various school events and will also be involved in a dance concert towards the end of the year. Interested students should submit their signed/completed ‘Dance Enrolment’ and ‘Terms and Condition’ Forms to the Main Reception (Accounts Window) by no later than Wednesday February 17. You can watch our 2016 Student Leaders recite their pledge HERE. The College then welcomed back and acknowledged our VCE 2015 High Achievers and congratulated them on their recent academic success. This section of the event was highlighted by an outstanding speech to 2016 students from our College Dux Ms Nakita Costanzo. Nakita's commitment and dedication to her academic studies across both of her VCE years is to be commended and is something which all current students can aspire to. The assembly concluded with Mr. Kenny's first official address for 2016. And if current achievements are anything to go by, she has a lifetime of dance to look forward to - having recently been one of very few students across the State accepted to perform at the VET Dance ‘Top Class - Seasons of Excellence’ concert, set to take place on Thursday February 25 at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Eliza was selected to audition for this concert after receiving outstanding results in VET Dance which she completed at Marymede Catholic College in 2015 – finishing with an overall study score of 47 out of 50, the second highest in the State. To audition, Eliza prepared two solo performances in Contemporary and Jazz dance, with the later earning her selection into this year’s exhibition. “I was pretty nervous but also really excited going into the Audition” says Eliza, who now dances 4 nights a week at ‘Bev Palmer Performing Arts’ in South Morang. And whilst she loves everything about dancing – “performing, being up on stage and just everything!” she has found her passion to be a particularly helpful outlet during her VCE years – “dancing allows me to express myself and have a small amount of time away from studies and the demands of VCE.” This year Eliza is undertaking VCE Dance, English, Further Maths, Health & Human Development and Physical Education. She hopes to complete her VCE studies before exploring some options overseas in 2017 and beyond. “I’m hoping to eventually travel the world through my dancing and see where that takes me.” For now though, the focus is solely on VCE and her upcoming Top Class concert, although she does have some great advice for young aspiring dancers: “Go for it! Just keep dancing and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve something – anything is possible.” Marymede Catholic College would like to congratulate Eliza on this outstanding achievement and we wish her all the very best in her final year of Secondary school and future dancing endeavours. Meet the Teacher - Mrs. Natalie Savage In final edition of 'Meet the Teacher' for 2015, we speak with Mrs. Natalie Savage, a member of our Secondary School Teaching Team and Head of Sport. Name: Natalie Savage – Head of Sport (Secondary) & Secondary School Teacher – Natalie.savage@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? For the past 5 years I have been a part of the Secondary Health and Physical Education team as a Teacher which has seen me teach Years 7-12 Health and Years 7-10 P.E in addition to coaching several of our sporting teams including Netball, Tennis and Athletics. My greatest success as a Coach at Marymede Catholic College would be with our boys Volleyball team who have won Premierships in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. I have also been a Tutor Teacher as part of the Chanel Guild. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? My day is always jam-packed and very busy, usually I’m up at 5.00am to fit in my own training and then off to either swimming training at Mill Park YMCA (Term 4) or at my desk organising the day ahead. This year I have had the pleasure of teaching Year 12 Health and Human Development as well as the first group of Year 11 VET Sport and Recreation students along with Years 9-10 HPE. As I knew many of the Year 12’s when they were fresh faced Year 7 students, it was an honour to be a part of their journey and to support them in their final year of study at Marymede Catholic College. Being involved in the HPE and Sport Department means there is always something happening, whether it’s training, match-day or lunchtime competitions, it’s a very fun place to be involved in and extremely rewarding. I am very lucky to work in a team full of passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic Staff who are always keen to get the best out of everyone. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? There are many aspects of teaching that I find rewarding. I see myself as a role-model for future generations and not just simply a ‘Teacher’, so whether it be students achieving top marks or simply receiving a smile in the schoolyard from students, teaching brings something new, challenging, different and exciting every day. I always love it when people say “teachers have the best holidays, they get 20 weeks off a year”. Those of us who are teachers know that those ‘holidays’ never end up being a holiday as there’s usually work on laptops or a bag full of corrections to take home! Fast Five: Favourite Food: Avocado (Healthy), Ice Cream (Treat) Favourite Movie/TV Show: Keeping up with the Kardashians (Allows me to switch off my brain!) Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: - I have represented Victoria in Table Tennis at the National Championships - I am Level 6 Gymnast - I have played womens AFL - I love wakeboarding and skiing - Have played State League netball for VU in a championship division - I hold a brown belt in Karate - Played Grade 1 Victorian tennis Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: This changes often as I generally like to get behind female athletes having a positive impact for all females in sport. For 2015 I would say: Ronda Rousey, Serena Williams, Alana Blanchard, Sally Fitzgibbons and Michelle Payne. If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?: My Husband – I never seem to have time to spend with him. My Parents – They are the best parents anyone could ask for. Beyoncé – Ultimate girl-power! Making All The Write Moves - Bridget Cassar Tangas (Year 9) The dream of one day having her own book published is what drives Year 9 student, Bridget Cassar-Tangas, to continue following her passion for writing and based on recent achievements, Bridget’s dream is getting closer and closer each day. One of her recent creations, ‘In Class Now’ has just been accepted for publication into this year’s edition of ‘The Write Track’. The story was written as part of Bridget’s creative monologue writing task in her English class here at Marymede Catholic College. She then made the decision to enter the piece for publication but did not anticipate what would happen next. “When I found out that my story was one of the few that had been selected for publication (Australia wide) I was extremely overwhelmed and excited! It's such a huge achievement that I never expected, I thought I'll just enter and see how it goes.” recalls Bridget, who started writing in her spare time and grew very fond of it. “The best thing about writing is that you are able to imagine or create yourself in another world. I feel developing characters and the story itself, can allow your readers to visualise what they are reading.” Bridget also uploads many of her stories to the writing website ‘Wattpad’, one of which has successfully achieved 10,000 reads. “I would never have expected to accomplish such a mountable number of readers, and have had some great positive feedback from people who have read it.” Her advice to other young, aspiring writers? “Allow your imagination to create a piece of writing that is unique and special to you. Give it a go and you never know what the future holds for you!” You can find a link to some of Bridget’s stories online by clicking HERE. Marymede Catholic College would like to congratulate Bridget on her recent achievement and we wish her all the very best in her future creative endeavours. Year 9 student Bridget with this year's edition of 'The Write Track' Sketching His Way to Success - Massimo Gamboni to Hold Solo Art Exhibition Exciting times lie ahead for Massimo Gamboni (Year 9) who will take part in his first ever Solo Art Exhibition on December 3 titled ‘The Stages of Filmmaking, a Comical Take at the Making of Movies.’ Massimo, who has been drawing for as long he can remember, recently spent the last 3 months drawing cartoons about another one of his passions – filmmaking. Marymede Catholic College spoke with Massimo about his recent achievement: What are you looking forward to most about the exhibition? I’m looking forward to being able to showcase my talents. How many of your own drawings/creations do you keep at home? I’ve drawn so many pieces over the years that it’s probably too hard to keep track! What are your ambitions for the future? I hope to finish School, and go on study animation at University. To one day work for Pixar (a California-based animation company) would be a dream come true. Do you have any advice for other young students/children who enjoy drawing/art? Draw what you love and try to share your artwork with as many people as possible. You never know who will see them and give you a new opportunity. The Baseline City of Whittlesea Program gave me the opportunity to showcase my images and I highly recommend joining that program if you are interested in drawing/art. Marymede Catholic College would like to congratulate Massimo on his recent achievements and we wish him all the best in his future artistic endeavours. The Stages of Filmmaking, a Comical Take at the Making of Movies will be at EDGE Services for Young People, Shop MM1, Westfield Plenty Valley, Mill Park, from December 3. 'Mission-Action' Success Sees $10,000 donated to St. Vincent De Paul Society It was truly a special moment in the history of Marymede Catholic College on Thursday November 12 as College Principal Mr. Kenny along with 2016 College Captains Adrian and Betsey, and 2015 Primary School Leaders Jarrod and Nandana presented Mr. Wileman from St. Vincent De Paul Society with a cheque for $10,000 – a result of the funds raised from Marymede Day 2015. The story behind this fundraising campaign starts months ago, with the College deciding to make Marymede Day 2015 a ‘Mission-Action’ day – an opportunity for all students to get together and share in something truly special by setting themselves a goal of raising $10,000 in just one day. Head of Faith & Mission P-12 Ms. Judeline Wadhwani looks back on the decision – “We believed $ 10,000 was an achievable target for our first year of Mission-Action. We wanted to get the community’s confidence in achieving a realistic target. St Vincent de Paul is a well-loved and respected Catholic charity: internationally, nationally and locally. We also liked the fact that we work so closely with the Mernda Conference of Vinnies and decided to support it.” And so the hard work began – with each Guild deciding upon different experiences which would be available for students to take part in on the day. The majority of the funds were raised through ticket sales which could be used by students to enjoy activities such as the FIFA Competition, Photo Booth, Sporting Challenge, Face and Nail Painting and of course a number of different food stalls which are always popular at the College! “The manner in which Mission-Action was embraced by students and staff alike was very rewarding to me. As the weeks and days drew near, the excitement was palpable and there was a great sense of anticipation about what the day would bring.” Ms. Wadhwani “It was great to see so much student involvement throughout the campaign and to see our students working together. The strong sense of communication really helped to ensure the campaign would be a success.” Ms. Andrea Zappulla – Head of Chanel Guild and Secondary School Teacher. It was clear by the end of the afternoon, that Marymede Day 2015 was a huge success. Students truly embraced the opportunity to celebrate the occasion and made the most of the 3 hour block in which the activities occurred. However the final result of fundraising would not be known for several days whilst counting took place. “I was so emotional at the moment the $10,000 was announced, it is so humbling to know I was part of a great community coming together to make such a big difference.” Ms Melinda Muir – Head of Faith & Mission (Primary) “I think the best thing about achieving our target of $10 000 was that the students really didn’t believe they could do it. To see their response upon hearing what was raised, gave the students a real sense of pride in being able to help others.” Ms Simone McGill - Youth Ministry Co-ordinator and Chisholm Guild Tutor. With the final tally announced, and our goal of $10,000 reached, students gathered at the final Secondary School assembly for 2015 to hand over the cheque and reflect on the great achievement. We’d like to thank all members of the Marymede Community for their support and look forward to next years campaign – with a view to raising $16,000 in ‘16! Cheque for $10,000 presented to St. Vincent De Paul Society The Cupcake Stall at Marymede Day 2015 Students embrace Mission-Action Meet the Teacher - Mr. Derek McConn In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mr. Derek McConn, a member of our Secondary School Teaching Team and Head of Health and Physical Education. Name: Derek McConn – Head of Health and Physical Education (Secondary) & Secondary School Teacher – derek.mcconn@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I am the Head of Health and Physical Education (7 – 12) and I also currently teach Years 7-10 Physical Education, VCE Physical Education and Sport. My role here at Marymede Catholic College is to facilitate the delivery of a broad and inclusive physical education program for all students in Years 7-12. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? Currently, the Health and Physical Education (HPE) team are working on the development of a VCE Concept Program (Years 7-10) in Physical Education which is to be introduced in 2016. Simply put, our students will be introduced to VCE concepts from Year 7 accelerating their learning in a practical setting. For example, rather than a student in Year 7 just completing an athletics unit, in 2016 they will gain an understating of the concept of ‘Energy Systems’ through the medium of athletics. We will be introducing several VCE concepts to our student cohort in this manner across the Years 7-10 Physical Education program. We believe this will give Marymede students who wish to study subjects in the HPE domain a significant advantage as they enter their VCE program in the coming years. My day is broken up between teaching and facilitating the design and delivery of our outstanding Physical Education program at the College. This requires regular meetings with Staff, collaborating on the creation of new ideas, making relevant bookings for external coaches and events, researching and planning new ideas for curriculum development and setting a plan in place where these new ideas can be delivered effectively and on time. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? Researching and introducing innovative new approaches to developing our program is extremely enjoyable. The real reward is seeing our students engaged on a level which surpasses even their own expectations. Additionally, working with a team who share the same vision, passion and values makes every day an enjoyable experience at Marymede Catholic College. Fast Five: Favourite Food: Fajitas (Mexican Irish Food!) Favourite Movie/TV Show: Game of Thrones Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I love to make homemade wine. Students have been working with Year 10 classes to look at the way in which Indigenous communities relate to the land, relationships, communities and the world around them. Classes have read dream time stories, wrote prayers, painted story stones and investigated the history of Indigenous persecution in Australia. They drew connections between Indigenous Religion and Catholicism in the calls to respect law, land, love and maintain community. Philly's visit to Marymede Catholic College was hughly popular with the Year 5 students who were keen to ask as many questions as they possibly could. Philly performed a couple of tracks for the audience before speaking to them about his life, indigenous heritage and Aboriginal spirituality. The session concluded with a workshop on poems & rap music. Thank you Philly! Years 9-11 Examination Information Please find below, the examination information for students in Years 9, 10 & 11. Name: Riccardo Iuele – Head of Religious Education (Secondary) & Secondary School Teacher – riccardo.iuele@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? In addition to my role of Head of Religious Education (Secondary) as a member of the Secondary Leadership Team, I also teach VCE (Years 11 & 12) Italian, Year 11 Texts & Traditions, Year 12 Religion & Society and Years 8 & 10 Italian. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? As part of their Texts and Traditions studies, our Year 11 students are currently working on their action research projects exploring the issue of Ecology from both the Catholic and Jewish perspectives. I am very passionate about this issue particularly because it is an issue that concerns all human beings. Students have been working in groups for the past few weeks studying the issue locally. A particular focus is the manner in which the College utilises key resources of energy (electricity consumption), tree planting (air pollution and air quality), water (recycled water that is harvested) and waste management (recycling). This action research project is our direct response to Pope Francis’ encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ and his call to action for all humanity to care for our common home. The question at the heart of this action research project for our students is at the heart of Laudato Si – ‘What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?’ This inquiry project is also a direct response to our College theme this year “Let us love not only in words and speech, but in truth and action” (John 3:18). I am really looking forward to seeing students present their findings and key insights as well as their action plans with clearly defined and achievable targets for the College in 2016 and beyond for how we manage our use of natural resources. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? The most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is working with adolescents at the various stages of their development and providing them with meaningful opportunities to grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, and socially. It is very rewarding to see young men and women achieve strong academic outcomes particularly when they might have doubted their potential and never thought themselves capable of being successful in their studies. It is very gratifying to see past Year 12 students go on to achieve and realise their ambitions and aspirations and then return to the College from time to time to have a “caffe” with me and share their successes and life experiences. I feel very blessed to be able to work with adolescents at Marymede Catholic College because here, education is informed by a particular understanding of the world and a particular understanding of what it means to be human. Fast Five: Favourite Food: Pasta – definitely! Favourite Movie/TV Show: La Vita e` Bella Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I love to make homemade wine. Executive Assistant to the Principal – Providing direct administrative assistance to the Principal. Name: Jacqueline Tjorpatzis - Year 3.1 Classroom Teacher / Year Level Coordinator (Year 3) - jacqueline.tjorpatzis@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I am fortunate and blessed to have a beautiful Year 3 class at Marymede Catholic College. I am also the Year Level Coordinator for Year 3. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? As part of my Research Project for my Masters Degree in Education: (Student Wellbeing), I will be implementing mindfulness, meditation and positive education strategies inside and outside of the classroom. I will be running meditation this Semester at lunch time for a range of different year levels. My goal is to teach children (and even adults) multiple strategies to enhance their own wellbeing. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? To teach is a blessing. Each day I get the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life. As a teacher, I’m a lifelong learner so I get to learn with the kids which is always exciting. I love seeing the journey of all students – especially those I have taught - from Prep to Year 12. I know that I had an overwhelming feeling of joy and pride seeing the students I taught in Year 1 commence in Year 7 this year. That is what makes Marymede Catholic College so special. Not many schools in Victoria give you the opportunity to see the journey from Prep to Year 12. I love seeing how the kids evolve over time and how much more “grown up” they become. Especially being a Primary teacher, I get to see a bigger and beautiful change. I love it! Fast Five: Favourite Food: Hot Chips. Favourite Movie/TV Show: Avatar & The Voice (The talent on that show is amazing!) It took courage, strength, assurance and trust in her own abilities. She inspires me to inhabit these qualities as well. I’d love to know how she did it! - “I am not afraid... I was born to do this.” Louise Hay - The leading pioneer of positive thinking, affirmations and on how our thoughts can create our reality. Her story is another which inspires me on how she overcame cancer through a positive mindset and changing her life for the good. Her books and publishing company leads the industry in self-help and her books have transformed many lives. I’d love to get her advice on how I can impact the people around me for positive change as she has. - “The best gift we can give to children is to teach them to love themselves” Jesus - One of the greatest teachers of all time. One man who changed the world. He demonstrated love and compassion to all those people with whom he encountered. This took a special person to do it all. Looking beyond his divinity, he changed humanity through his words and actions. I find this incredible and fascinating. I’d love to understand how he thinks, what words of wisdom he would impart for today’s modern society and how he had the ability to heal people instantly. - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (The golden rule) Photo by Liam McCormack High Performance Academy Kicking Goals It's been another busy yet productive Term for members of the Marymede High Performance Academy with training concluding for Term 3 and set to continue early in Term 4. Photo by Liam McCormack Tournament of Minds 2016 On the 22nd and 23rd of August 2015, Marymede Catholic College participated in the Tournament of Minds 2016 – Metro Northern Regional Finals held at La Trobe University, Bundoora. The College had a total of two Primary teams participate in the Language Literature challenge facilitated by Ms. Beth Cilia, in addition to three Secondary teams participating in the Maths & Engineering, Social Sciences and Applied Technology challenges facilitated by Mr.Vinodh Narasimhan, Ms. Angie Bedford & Ms.Emma Kiely and Mr. Jeremy Guzman respectively. The Tournament of Minds competition involves a six week long-term challenge and a spontaneous challenge provided to teams on the day. All challenges were released by the organisers on the 13th of July, 2015. Our students commenced their work on the challenge during this time. Teams had to find a solution for the long-term challenge and present it in a drama-style presentation. In addition, the students had to create props made of recycled materials as part of the challenge brief. The Maths and Engineering challenge this year required the students to make an invisible cargo vehicle, the Social Sciences challenge was about erasing important people from history, the Applied Technology challenge was to make a robot to clean the classroom out of mechano and the Language Literature challenge was about exploring the work of Australian author Aaron Blabey. After countless lunch times and after-school sessions, all teams were ready to present their work at the Regional Finals. Our students presented their long-term challenge as a ten minute presentation. In addition, the students had to complete a secret spontaneous challenge which tested their creativity and team work. All teams did a fantastic job at the tournament and the feedback from the judges was very positive. The Applied Technology team was declared winners of the Metro Northern Regional Finals and have been invited to participate at the State Finals to be held on the 13th of September, 2015 at LaTrobe University, Bundoora. This is a first in the history of Marymede Catholic College and we would like to wish the Applied Technology Team all the success at the State Finals. Primary Progress Interview Letter Years 7-10 Progress Interview Letter Meet the Teacher - Mr Jeremy Guzman In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mr. Jeremy Guzman from the Secondary School. Name: Jeremy Guzman - Secondary School Teacher jeremy.guzman@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I currently teach Media from Years 9-12 and VET Media. I also coordinate the College Yearbook and run the Marymede Film School Co-Curricular Program with Ms Hopkins. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? The Year 11 Media students are creating a television news program called ‘Marymede Now’. As part of their assessment, each student is required to fulfil the responsibilities of a specialist role, such as a reporter or camera operator, and collaborate with their peers in small teams to produce a news story. For this project, I also staged a breaking news event, which the class knew nothing about. When an anti-litter protest involving Ms Wake, Ms Bedford and the 7.1 Drama class broke out in Wurrun Common, ‘Marymede Now’ were first to arrive at the scene with exclusive coverage as the news unfolded! What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? The most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher is seeing students overcome a challenge and achieve their goals, be it academic or personal. Even the smallest achievement, like putting your hand up and having a go at answering a question, can take a lot of courage for some people and can cultivate the biggest feeling of success. Fast Five: Favourite Food: I have recently enjoyed trying Spanish and Mexican cuisine. Favourite Movie/TV Show: This is very difficult for a Media teacher to answer! At the moment, my favourite film is Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, and my favourite TV show is Glitch – a gripping new Australian drama on the ABC. Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I play the drums, piano and know a few chords on the guitar. Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: The Australian Cricket Team. If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?: Tina Fey - To make me laugh; Dave Grohl - To provide me with creative inspiration; Quentin Tarantino - To teach me how to be a better filmmaker. I am a member of the Primary School Teaching team, currently teaching Year 2.2. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? The Year 2 team and I have recently been working with students on a new program this year called 'The Levelled Literacy Intervention Program'. This program focuses on the individual needs of each of our students in order to help them reach their full potential. Students learn reading and writing skills in small groups with a direct focus on individual needs. The Levelled Literacy Intervention lessons are designed to provide direct, yet fun, supplemental instruction for those who require it and we are already seeing some excellent results. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is being able to work closely with my students and inspire them to achieve their goals both academically and spiritually. Fast Five: Favourite Food: Chocolate Favourite Movie/TV Show: Finding Neverland Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I used to be a Swimming Coach and Zumba Instructor! The steel frame for the building is now 90% complete and we anticipate the pouring of concrete to commence within the next fortnight. Once the building flooring has been completed, remaining construction works will progress extremely quickly, which will allow for the building to be complete prior to the conclusion of the 2015 School year, with classes ready to go by 2016. You can view the progress through photos below: Meet the Teacher - Ms Judeline Wadhwani In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Ms Judeline Wadhwani, member of our College Executive Team, Secondary School Teacher and Head of Faith & Mission (P12). Name: Judeline Wadhwani - Head of Faith & Mission (P-12) judeline.wadhwani@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I am a member of the College Executive, Combined Leadership and Secondary Leadership Teams. I also teach Religious Education for students in Years 10 and 11. I love teaching both classes. The students are magnificent: very open to exploring issues of faith in contemporary living and to discussing justice awareness responses. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes? An interesting project which we launched this term is the Year 5 and Year 10 LearningTeaching Linkage. This pilot project involved teacher teams facilitating the collaboration between Year 10 RE and the Year 5 Inquiry Learning classes on the topics of Aboriginal History, Spirituality and present day Indigenous communities. The big picture for this learning linkage is to deepen the students’ awareness of the importance of Reconciliation through a considered response as 21st century learners. Our Year 10 “scholar-teachers” are engaging superbly with their lesson preparation, asking lots of questions and coming up with loads of creative ideas for presentation to our Year 5s. RE classes are abuzz with learning and preparation. A typical school day for me begin with Morning Prayer in the chapel which provides a beautiful start to the day through colleagues sharing thoughtful prayers and reflections accompanied by soul-stirring music. The school day involves a combination of teaching, Leadership Team meetings and planning with teams of staff and students for the various events that make up a robust spiritual life at the College. Currently we are busy working with our student leaders at Years 5 to 12 for a “MissionAction” focus for Marymede Day. All the funds raised from this fun-filled feast day will be donated to a charity that the student leaders nominate. We are also working on our first Year 11 Christian Leadership Retreat in late August and our first P-12 McAuley Guild Mass. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? Relationships with the students and staff. When the penny drops for the students during the early weeks of learning-teaching that they can achieve whatever they set out to achieve with the “fire in their belly”, a most amazing transformation of capabilities can take place. Students are very generous with their time in serving the school. The 1000Letterbox drop in the College neighbourhood to raise awareness about Human Trafficking is a fine example of our Year 12 students and their RE teachers going the extra mile to show that thinking citizens are formed in the classroom. Staff support for one another is at the heart of everything we do. It was a grand experience to be “learners” in classes that our “savvier ICT-savvy” colleagues conducted on our Professional Learning Day. Fast Five: Favourite Food: Dosa (thin South Indian savoury crepe) with fresh coconut chutney. Favourite Movie/TV Show: My Best Friend's Wedding. Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: When it comes to displaying team spirit, I will even dance! Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: I prefer tennis so don’t have a favourite sporting team. My all time tennis hero – Andre Agassi because he played ace tennis, but more importantly because he was always decent and genuinely decent to the loser. Something Roger Federer could learn!! If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?: They have all gone to their eternal rest. Nonetheless, I would pick Mahatma Gandhi & Nelson Mandela Mother Teresa Martin Luther King Jr. They were people of great hope who were also top champions of non-violent means of attaining peace; something so relevant to our times. Mother Teresa is an unmatchable model of service towards the destitute. Ms. Wadhwani with Fr. Bob Maguire during his 2014 visit to Marymede Catholic College as part of the Inspirational Catholic Speakers Program. Meet the Teacher - Mrs Nicole Lawrenson In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mrs Nicole Lawrenson from the College Administration Team. Name: Nicole Lawrenson - Personal Assistant to the Deputy Principals nicole.lawrenson@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I am the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Principals - Liz Crane (Primary) and Robyn Roberts (Secondary) Provide us with a 'snapshot' into your daily routine at the College. For me, a normal day at the College would involve providing secretarial and administrative support at a leadership level for both Deputy Principals. This often includes meeting co-ordination, diary management, adminsitrative support at meetings, answering phone calls and providing additional administrative support as required. What do you love most about working at Marymede Catholic College? Seeing students being provided with opportunities to reach their full potential and knowing that in some way, I may have contributed to that. Fast Five: Favourite Food: Lamb Favourite Movie/TV Show: The Blind Side & The Green Mile Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I keep chooks and sheep! I also have a beehive. Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Whittlesea Eagles FC - Under 10's and Under 17's (because my two sons play in those teams) and the Whittlesea Netball Club Rockets Under 13's (because my daughter plays in that team). If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?: Freddie Mercury - I'm a Queen tragic and a child of the 70's! Russell Brand - For a bit of light hearted comedy with a twist. My Dad - He passed away 5 years ago and there's so much that he's missed that I want to share with him. I have the joy of teaching Year 1 students (Class 1.1) along with holding the role of Year Level Co-Ordinator for the wonderful and dedicated Year 1 Team. Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently working on? The Year 1 students have recently taken on the task of raising some new chicks which we watched hatch at school! Students have been very excited to see them grow and with the immense help from the College Maintenance Team, we recently moved them into the amazing Chicken Coop which was built by our VCAL students. We hope that the chicks will be hatching eggs in the near future. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? Apart from doing something that I love and enjoy, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a teacher is seeing my students flourish and fully comprehend concepts which they are learning (however long it takes!). It is also very rewarding to see the students move on to greater achievements such as becoming a student leader and maturing into amazing individuals. To top it off, sometimes I get to be a kid too! Name: James Paraskeva - Secondary School Teacher - james.paraskeva@marymede.vic.edu.au What is your role at the College? I am currently a Secondary School classroom teacher of Mathematics, Physical Education and Health & Human Development. I have previously taught Science, Information Technology, and Biology. Additionally, on any given day I can be seen before and after School and/or during lunchtime coaching various College sporting teams. At the moment I have two teams in a Grand Final; the Senior Boys AFL Team (with Mr DeSilva) and the Junior Boys Volleyball Team. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher? Teaching involves being a role model for those under your care. I believe it’s not so much what you teach but more so providing students with strategies on overcoming difficulty so that those skills and self-belief can flow into life after school; unless of course you’re playing the “VCE game”! Fast Five: Favourite Food: Oats, Nuts and Yoghurt Favourite Movie/TV Show: Game of Thrones Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I have competed at a National level in both Olympic Weightlifting and Computer Gaming! Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Hawthorn Football Club If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?: David Attenborough - One of the most inspiring teachers of the natural world. Cyril Rioli - An incredibly clever and quick-thinking footballer. His story of leaving his remote indigenous family to become a professional footballer is remarkable. My Son - Who better to share the company of two of my idols than with my clever little toddler! MCATH - Justice Awareness Campaign Social Justice continues to play a major role in the life of Marymede Catholic College with Year 12 students and teachers recently pursuing a major campaign to raise Justice Awareness against the evils of Human Trafficking - a campaign which could not have been made possible without the hard work and determination of the Marymede Social Justice group - 'MCATH'. ‘MCATH’ (Marymede Catholic College Against Trafficking in Humans) was founded in 2014 as a result of the studies undertaken on Human Trafficking by our Year 12 cohort. Students were astounded to hear of the extent to which Human Trafficking occurs, not only in Melbourne but indeed across all of Australia. After hearing Sr. Joan Kennedy (a Presentation nun and member of Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans) speak as part of our Inspirational Catholic Speakers Program last year, a group of dedicated Year 12 students decided to form MCATH to raise Justice Awareness at the College. The group designed a set of 4 posters and a brochure within one classroom period and thus MCATH was launched with a view to spreading their message throughout the wider community. In 2015 MCATH designed its own official logo and decided to pursue a campaign in which 1000 informative flyers would be delivered to letterboxes around our local neighbourhood. MCATH Co-ordinator Ms. Kathy Vlahusic has since been invited by ACRATH to present the work of MCATH at a Professional Learning Day for all teachers in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. ACRATH has also asked the College for permission to leverage the group’s Justice Awareness posters on its national website. In addition to the letterbox campaign, MCATH will present the aims and objectives of its existence to all students at an upcoming whole school assembly with a view to encouraging more students to join the group and further its cause. Justice Awareness posters will be delivered to every Tutor Group homeroom in a bid to raise awareness on Human Trafficking. The group will continue to work closely with ACRATH, remaining informed about global, national and local issues in Human Trafficking, whilst focusing on diverse groups and needs. Students were also joined by Miss Angie Bedford and the Year 10 and 11 Drama classes. Alex screened some of the music videos he has directed for Sydney-based bands RUFUS and Wolf Tide, and he discussed the techniques he uses to create visual narratives. Alex also test screened a video he is currently working on for Yuma X and the students were able to give him audience feedback on the edit. Hearing about Alex’s creative process – from concept and treatment to final video – inspired the students and gave them a unique insight into the media industry. Erica Paglianiti (Year 5) to Represent Victoria Erica Paglianiti (Year 5) will soon get the opportunity to dance for Victoria having recently been selected to represent her state at the upcoming 23 rd Annual Australasian Energetiks Scholarships, a dance competition which will be held from Friday 17 th – 19th July, 2015. It’s an outstanding achievement for Erica, who has been performing since the age of 3 and now dances every week at the ‘Dance Discovery’ School in Lalor. Although she also performs in the styles of Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Acro and HipHop, it is Tap dancing for which she will represent the state of Victoria. To earn selection at the upcoming Scholarships, Erica was required to take part in a number of performance based examinations which showcased her talent and ability on the dance floor with only a handful of students gaining selection from Dance Schools across the state. Whilst she is proud of her achievements, Erica’s real enjoyment comes from being able to express herself whilst dancing, learning new moves and styles, and meeting new friends who share her interests in dance along the way. Along with the dream of one day becoming a professional tap dancer, Erica hopes to continue representing her state and performing at Dance Discovery, whilst mastering the art of performing a front aerial flip on the dance floor. For now however, her sights are solely focused on the upcoming Australasian Energetiks Scholarships. Marymede Catholic College congratulates Erica on her recent achievements and we wish her all the very best in her future dancing endeavours. This annual Forum gathers the best and the brightest senior Secondary students from around Australia who are seeking to pursue a career in science. It’s an outstanding achievement for Maya, considering she has only been playing the sport for 2 years. “I started playing Basketball in 2013 so that I could join a team environment” says Maya, who now plays every Thursday night for The Saints in the Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Association. Maya’s potential in the sport was identified in 2014 and she was soon selected into the Australian Women’s Team Development Squad. “Playing with the Australian development squad was a daunting experience. All my teammates were older than me and had been playing for a lot longer than I had. However it allowed me to gain more confidence in myself and I learnt a lot from the opportunity.” Maya hopes that her Basketball endeavours will allow her to travel the world and compete for Australia, but for now her sights are solely focused on the upcoming Kevin Coombs Cup which will take place in Ballarat from Tuesday April 14 to Saturday April 18. Her preparation for the State team consists of weekly Sunday training, in addition to her regular weekly training with her local team. Peace in the Playground - By Nanette Mangoba Congratulations to Nanette Mangoba (Year 11) who was last year was offered a Media internship at the Australian Catholics Magazine and was one of the lucky few who worked on the organisations Summer 2015 edition. Nanette's article titled 'Peace in the Playground' has since been published and can be read below: (Courtesy of Australian Catholics Magazine https://www.australiancatholics.com.au/article.aspx?aeid=42535#.VQJADo7jJ 4m) Peace in the Playground - Nanette Mangoba How do we cope when we become the target of a bully? As teenagers, it’s common to get hooked onto trying to fit in. We can do some pretty crazy things to be in the ‘popular’ group. Although it’s great to feel so loved by many others, we should try to be an individual, remain true to our self and should not feel compelled to do something we don’t want to do. But sometimes the social hierarchy can start to crumble, sparking horrible situations like bullying. Battle lines get drawn, and people get targeted for being part of the wrong ‘clique’. From cyber bullying to verbal harassment, it’s an unfortunate reality for many students. So how do we sort this out? There’s always a way to make peace in the ‘School Wars’. Take the movie The Breakfast Club for instance. Five students from different social groups (a nerd, a jock, a rebel, a princess and a basket case) spend a whole Saturday in detention at school and won’t even look at each other at first. But through the day, they adapt to each other’s differences and become friends. Five keys to peace in the playground Here are some tips for when you find yourself in the middle of a bullying situation. 1. Keep calm and carry on Bullies are looking to hurt and get a response, so sometimes the best response is no response at all. Ignore the remarks directed at you, tell the bully to stop and simply walk away. Someone who doesn’t get a reaction from a bully is less likely to be targeted again. 2. Assess the situation Is the bully after your lunch money? Perhaps you can neutralise the situation by bringing your lunch from home. Do they target you when you’re alone? Try finding some friends to walk around the school with. 3. Tell someone about it If bullying is happening on a regular basis, you need to do something about it. Talk to your parents and your teachers about what’s happening. It’s their job to support you in these situations. You don’t have to fight these battles all by yourself. 4. Don’t believe the insults It’s easy to get so caught up in the situation that you start to believe the insults bullies direct at you. Remind yourself to never let a bully’s comments shape who you are. Listen to the people you love and ignore the words of the ones who bring you down. 5. Love your neighbour I’m not saying to place your complete love and trust in bullies, but it doesn’t harm the situation to be civil with them if you can. It’s important to address the issue, but it’s also important to remember that bullies are people, too, and are just as capable of being loved and forgiven by God as you are. Nanetta Mangoba is a Year 11 student at at Marymede Catholic College in Melbourne. She undertook an internship at Australian Catholics in September 2014. Camp Gallipoli 2015 Marymede Catholic College is proud to be associated with Camp Gallipoli: Commemorating 100 years of ANZAC Spirit. What is Camp Gallipoli?: Camp Gallipoli Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established to help reserve, foster and perpetuate the unique spirit of ANZAC commemorations. Camp Gallipoli is charged with the task of delivering a unique event platform bringing together people from across Australia and New Zealand to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC landings. The purpose of the events is to provide opportunity for our youth to support ANZAC day as participants rather than spectators. The event promises to be an educational, respectful and unforgettably moving tribute to all defence personnel who have served and are serving in War. Camp Gallipoli provides a unique opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our forbearers and a chance to ensure we perpetuate the spirit of ANZAC. Why support Camp Gallipoli?: Camp Gallipoli aims to educate our young from a memorable and moving platform about the service and sacrifice of the 11,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers who were lost in battles at ANZAC cove in 1915. This event provides a unique opportunity for our youth to participate and engage in the centenary commemorations of ANZAC Day actively rather than as bystanders. Youth today will hopefully never experience warfare on the scale of our forbearers but it is our obligation to establish a transitional process of information to this generation so as to perpetuate the spirit of ANZAC. In Gallipoli, there was no discrimination, intolerance or prejudice, our soldiers formed a unique bond with is known as the spirit of ANZAC. The ANZAC spirit has provided the foundations of who we are and what we stand for as a Nation. The Event: Camp Gallipoli Event program is designed to engage our youth, educate and entertain. Prayer Tables in Classrooms Project at Marymede Catholic College The Prayer Tables in Classrooms Project at Marymede Catholic College South Morang, was envisaged as a meaningful activity which would reflect our belief in “faith in action”. According to Judeline Wadhwani, Head of Faith and Mission (P-12), “Whilst we could have purchased the required number of prayer tables for each of the classrooms, we decided that we had enough talent and commitment from our students and staff to make these tables at school as a way to engage students and enhance our daily morning prayer.” Mr Ronan Kennedy, Woodwork teacher, suggested that one full school day be dedicated to making thirty prayer tables in our Design Technology room. The students he recommended be invited to participate in this project are known to be passionate about Design Technology – Wood and have shown remarkable giftedness and the ability to create a design brief and execute it to perfection. Mr Kennedy commented, “the project was “a great opportunity for all these students to showcase their talent and contribute to Marymede in a positive way. It has provided the opportunity to show the strengths of these students in a practical based subject and enable them experience success”. The day dawned on 15th August, the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady, when the thirty students from across the Guilds arrived at the Woodword Room and greeted Mr Kennedy, full of enthusiasm to participate, produce and proudly parade their skills. Soon a thick carpet of wood shavings spread across the floor as the team continued to work in a calm but indescribably urgent manner for the task to be accomplished at the stroke of 3.03 pm. They had pledged to deliver on Mr Kennedy’s expectation of thirty prayer tables at the close of day. So impressed were our Year 12 Media students with the “Pied Piper” effect that Mr Kennedy had created with the project, they offered to film the beehive of industry and conduct interviews. Year 9 student Jamie Perta said, “I am enjoying making the tables. It is good pressure to try and finish the thirty tables in 1 day and we are having a lot of fun working on them.” Another Year 9 student Joel Crocitti said, “I like building stuff and the project has provided a lot of fun.” Vincent Doherty, a new member of the teaching staff commented that the project was “a great opportunity for students to identify with the Catholic ethos of the school in bringing together all their skills to see the completion of the tables within a day.” A pizza lunch was provided to the thirty strong team who relished it, but got back to work in no time. Ms Wadhwani commented, “Regular visits to the Woodwork room provided several moments of awe-struck wonder as I beheld student engagement at its height : every student owning the project, working with the utmost concentration, attending to precision as they sawed and chiselled and worked the machinery, with the clock ticking away to the end of day”. Marymede Catholic College invited Archbishop Rev. Denis Hart for the Blessing and Opening Ceremony of our new VCE Centre on 16th September. During the Blessing Ceremony, Archbishop Hart blessed the prayer tables which are now ready to be rolled out to each of the classrooms. We are very proud of our team of Woodwork students and staff for the commitment they have shown, to see the project to its successful completion. Emily Maney Takes Part in Australian Catholics Magazine Internship In early April, three Marymede students applied for the 2014 Australian Catholics Media Internship Program, which offered students a unique opportunity to be a guest Editor of the Spring edition of the Australian Catholics Magazine. Connar Nelson (Year 11), Nanette Mangoba (Year 10), and Emily Maney (Year 10), were each required to enter 3 pieces of writing to Australian Catholics Magazine. Emily was to later be announced as 1 of only 6 students from Catholic Schools across the State to be awarded the internship. Emily, who submitted two short stories and one news article in her application, spent 5 days at Jesuit Communications, where she gained hands-on experience and developed her skills in journalism and publishing. “On our first day, we were told that our theme for our writing pieces was “Be Brave”. We then sat in a group and brainstormed some different ideas that we thought would be interesting to read and write about.” Each student was then assigned 2 articles each, which they were to work on and then have published in the spring edition of the Magazine. “Every morning started with a 30 minute briefing with Michael, our editor, but we also spent the week listening to different guest speakers, and had a lot of downtime to work on our articles.” Emily, who is aspiring to continue her journalism career after Secondary School, said the opportunity to be a part of the program gave her valuable insight into the life of a journalist. “I really enjoyed getting in there and experiencing what journalism is all about, getting a first-hand view of a job in journalism. I learnt that writing for a magazine is very different to writing a short story or an essay for school”. Marymede Catholic College congratulates Emily on her recent achievements.
