Carolyn Askew was born in Millen, Georgia, to the late Benjamin Franklin Bargeron and Katie Bell Bargeron. She moved to Sparta in 1949, where she met and married her late husband, Raymond Sidney Askew. After her husband passed in 2002, Carolyn moved to Monticello in 2005, to be near her daughter. Before retirement, she was a middle school teacher for John Hancock Academy in Sparta. Carolyn was a member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Mansfield, Georgia; and taught the Ladies Sunday School class. She was a member of the Young at Heart group, a choir member, and President of the WMU at the church. She was a former member of the Culverton Baptist Church in Sparta, where she also taught the Adult Sunday School class; and served as the organist and pianist. Carolyn Askew volunteered at The Retreat Nursing Home. Along with her husband, and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters and brother, Martha Cates, Ruby Jenkins, and Tyler Bargeron. She is survived by her children and sons-in-law, Carol and Ronald Lewis of Harlem, Clara Askew of Macon, Nancy and Ralph Gunn of Monticello, Kathy and Donald Lewis of Deepstep, and Delmar Askew of Decatur; grandchildren, Greg Burgamy, Jonathan Kent, Mallory Lewis, William Lewis, Aaron Gunn, Jarrod Gunn, Chris Lewis, Marshal Lewis, Spenser Lewis, and Kellie Lewis; great grandchildren, Kristy Johnson, Cassy Boyer, Hunter Burgamy, Hadley Gunn, Avery Gunn, Tyler Lewis, Isaac Lewis, Lylah Lewis, and Bailey Lewis; great, great grandchildren, Trent Johnson, Kaitlin Johnson, and Carly Johnson; sister, Kathryn Wilson of Palmetto; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Adams of Havana, Florida. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, September 14, 2014, at New Rocky Creek Baptist Church, 190 New Rocky Creek Road, Mansfield, Georgia 30055. Dr. Randal Reese will officiate. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Culverton Baptist Church Cemetery in Sparta. Serving as pallbearers will be the grandsons. The family will receive friends prior to the service, Sunday, September 14, 2014, from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M., at New Rocky Creek Baptist Church. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the New Rocky Creek Baptist Church Van Fund, 190 Rocky Creek Road, Mansfield, Georgia 30055.
