Algebra and Trigonometry 3rd edition by Stewart, Redlin and Watson
Or College Algebra at COCC
TI-83+ or TI-84 is recommended
College Algebra is a study of functions. The course begins with an introduction to functions,
function notation, and operations on functions. We will focus our attention on exponential,
logarithmic, polynomial and rational functions. Most of the material will come from chapters 3, 4
and 5 from our text. However some material will be introduced in class in the form of labs.
Specifically, students who complete Math 111: College Algebra will be able to:
•
model and solve applied, real-world, and theoretical mathematical problems requiring
the solution of linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic
functions.
•
use a graphing calculator to create appropriate graphs that represent mathematical
models, determine appropriate viewing windows and accurately interpret and draw
inferences regarding the meaning, implications and limitations of the graphs.
•
examine a variety of relationships stated in symbolic, graphical, or tabular form and
determine which represent functions; determine what the domain and range of
functions are; and draw inferences regarding the meaning, implications and
limitations of the given representation of the function.
•
modify and combine algebraic and graphical representations of functions and describe
the relationship between the methods and functional representations.
The end of the 7th week of the term is the last day to change from a grade to an audit, or vise versa.
This date is also the last day to drop a course without receiving a W on your transcript. After the
7th week, and before the Wednesday prior to finals week, you may drop a course and receive a W
on your transcript.
I adhere to Central Oregon Community College's standards as they are discussed in the Student
Rights and Responsibilities Handbook..
COCC is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution.
Your grade will be determined on your scores from homework, labs, two midterm exams, a project
and the final exam.
HOMEWORK (15%): Daily homework will be primarily handled electronically through the
WebAssign web page. You will have 5 chances to improve your homework score as long as you
complete the homework before the due date. The lowest two homework scores will be dropped.
There will also be occasional pencil and paper homework handed in.
LABS (10%): This part of your grade will come mainly as group work. The labs will be graded
on neatness, completeness, as well as accuracy.
PROJECT (5%): There will be one project assigned this quarter after the first test. It will
include a little research, math modeling, and a written explanation of what you did.
EXAMS (50%): We will have two midterm exams this quarter. They are tentatively scheduled
for Feb. 1st and March 1st. There will be no make-up exams.
FINAL EXAM (20%): The comprehensive final is to be given
Tuesday, March 19th from 1:00 – 3:00
GRADES: I use the above percentages to calculate your course grade. By keeping record of all
your scores you should be able to track your progress accurately. Here is hypothetical example to
help you calculate your grade.
Homework -- 110 out of 120 
Labs
-- 81 out of 90 
Project
-- 90 out of 100 
Exams
-- 152 out of 200 
Final
-- 75 out of 100 
TOTAL 

108/120 = 90%
81/90 = 90%
90/100 = 90%
152/200 = 76%
75/100 = 77%


 .90 * 10 = 9
 .90 * 10 = 9
 .90 * 10 = 9
 .76 * 50 = 38
 .75 * 20 = 15

 80.0 = B
If you have any questions or concerns please bring them to my attention. You will find I am quite

MORE 
Attention Faculty and Staff: COCC is providing STUDENTS with a new and improved hosted
email system (Microsoft Office 365), beginning Winter term 2013.
New features in Office 365 include:
-
10 Gigabytes of email storage (as opposed to the 75 Megabytes students have now)
25 Gigabytes of document storage (as opposed to the 200 Megabytes students have now)
Access to email and documents from any location where students have internet access
Exciting Web Applications like MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint – accessible in the
“cloud” – for use in creating and editing documents
The biggest news of all: Students will maintain your current email address!
Beginning December 17, 2012, COCC will begin migrating all STUDENT email accounts. The seamless
migration will continue during the Winter break. While students may experience limited email unavailability,
it will be only temporary. Students will NOT lose any emails or attachments in their COCC email account.
Note: As part of this transition, COCC will change the method by which Students login to email and any
COCC computer (for example, in COCC computer classrooms or drop-in labs). Students will begin using
their Student 82* number for logins to email and PCs on campus starting in December. Passwords will
remain the same. Key points to remember:




Email cutover for STUDENTS only is to begin starting December 17th and until January 4th –
officially live by January 7, 2013, start of Winter Term
Student email address will stay the same as will their password. Example: if a student’s
email today is jmouse@cocc.edu then after the transition their email will remain
jmouse@cocc.edu.
Logins to all COCC PCs and Office 365 cloud email will use student 82* number (once
transition begins)
o Example: If the 82* number is 821112222 then the login will be
821112222@cocc.edu (the password will remain the same)
Students will be able to access their email just as is done today from the COCC Student
Login page - http://www.cocc.edu/student-login/.
You can find more information about this exciting new change on the COCC Computer Lab website via
