SEPTEMBER
Meet High School
Graduation
Requirements
- By September, you should have checked that you meet graduation requirements and that you have the correct high school pre-requisite courses that you need for your post-secondary education. Please note: Meeting BC High School Graduation requirements does not guarantee admission to a post-secondary institution. It is the responsibility of all students and parents to ensure that they have met all post-secondary admission requirements as they vary among postsecondary institutions and programs of study.
Research Post-
Secondary
Institutions
- Continue researching college/university programs and admissions requirements. Explore post-secondary institutions and their respective programs. Use Career Cruising
(www.careercruising.com, user id: tupper, password: tigers) or Education Planner
(www.educationplanner.ca). Visit the Career Centre for assistance.
- Attend upcoming post-secondary information sessions offered at Tupper and locations across
Lower Mainland. See “Post-Secondary Information Sessions” sheet posted in front of the
Career Centre and read the Career and Student bulletin.
- UBC’s online application is already open
US Universities - If you plan to apply to a US university, start requesting letters of reference. The maximum number of references you can request from your Counsellor for university admissions is four (4).
You must give your Counsellor or Teacher a minimum of three (3) weeks’ notice and you must provide all necessary documentation (see “Mr. Lee’s Handouts page for the application form).
Note, application deadline for early action/early decision is November 1 st .
Research
Scholarships
Apply for SAT I & II or ACT if you are considering American universities. Register on-line at www.collegeboard.com. Prince of Wales Secondary is the closest exam site. Richmond and
Victoria are the next closest sites.
- To order transcripts, complete transcript request form and submit to Records Clerk in the
Office. Allow at least one week for processing.
Watch for early scholarship opportunities in the daily student bulletin and Career
Bulletin. Regularly check scholarship websites such as www.scholarshipscanada.com
and www.studentawards.com

Applications opened in Mid-August. Students should apply through www.you.ubc.ca
by creating a youbc account or the ApplyBC website at www.applybc.ca
.
Students will be asked to submit their completed grade 11 and 12 courses at the time of application. Also, all direct entry programs at the Vancouver Campus use broad-based admission therefore you will be asked to complete a personal profile as part of your application. At the present time a decision is pending as to how each faculty will use the personal profile. Keep monitoring UBC’s website.
Self-reporting opens in February; students self-report Term 2 marks. What a student reports online will be verified in May when the Ministry of Education sends the student’s marks electronically to UBC. Final marks are verified by UBC in July. Please be accurate in what you report; it must be the same as what the Ministry will send in May.
Students must report all grade 11 and grade 12 courses completed or in progress. Although grade 11 courses will not be used in calculating an admission average, these courses are required to meet pre-requisites for admission. Students will begin to receive admission decisions around mid-April. If a student does not receive a conditional offer of admission, it is usually for any of the reasons listed below:
Missing documentation (TOEFL/IELTS scores). Please note that if documents are missing, students will not be able to access the self-admission tool until all other documents are received.
The student has applied to a program (i.e. Commerce or Kinesiology) where their
personal profile will definitely be reviewed before an admission decision can be made
UBC will wait for more information to make a decision. For example, they will wait until they get verified grades through the ministry and updates until final marks are available.
The Student has applied to a program with additional requirements (e.g. Music requires an Audition and Music Supplementary Application)
You cannot self-report interim grades for Distributed Learning (DL) or Continuing Education
(CE) courses that are in progress.
You may only self-report a DL or CE course if it is completed and the final mark has been submitted to the Ministry of Education and is in your home school records.
Grade 12 students taking DL or CE courses are advised to have their DL or CE school submit their in progress course information directly to the Ministry of Education. Each course must be at least 50% complete by April of the student’s grade 12 year.
All DL and CE course information must come to UBC directly from the BC Ministry of
Education in order to be used in the UBC admission decision.
Students should not submit their DL or CE course information to their secondary school record until the course is complete and a final grade is available.
All applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in English before they’re admitted to UBC. Some of the ways students can meet this requirement includes:
Have studied full-time in English in Canada for the last 3 years prior to applying for admission. The first year of the three years can include ESL/Transitional classes, however grades 11 and 12 must be a regular curriculum. Exemption from the ELAS requirement can be on the following:
Achieve a grade of 70% or better on the provincial exam of BC English 12 or English
Literature or the equivalent.
Write and achieve a minimum score on a test of English language proficiency that evaluates skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing. Examples include: IELTS
– minimum score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0. TOEFL iBT - Overall score: 90
(Reading: 22, Listening: 22, Writing: 21, Speaking: 21)
Note, if you do not meet any of the requirements listed on UBC’s website but are fully proficient in English, you may request a “waiver of the English language requirement”.
Students applying to undergraduate programs at UBC Vancouver will be required to present a minimum final grade of 70% in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English in order to gain admission.
The LPI is NOT an admission requirement. However, it is needed to enroll in first year
English courses at UBC English. Regardless of the faculty to which you are applying, all UBC students are required to take first year English. The only students exempt from this requirement are students enrolled in the Vancouver Campus’ Faculty of Arts who plan to complete a major or honours in English. These students have the option of registering in an
English course (in which case they may need to write the LPI) or a writing course (in which case they do not need to write the LPI).
You do NOT have the write the LPI if your Term 2 grade in English 12 or Literature 12 is
80% or higher (or 75% or higher on your final English grade). If you must write the LPI, you can register online at the LPI website to write the LPI exam at University Hill in April
2012. Note, the LPI must be written in July at the latest to maintain registration in any first year English course at UBC.
LPI scores must be 5/6 or above on the essay portion. For students who do not score a minimum 5/6 on the essay portion of the LPI, whose interim grade in Eng 12 or Lit 12 is less than 80%; or whose final grade in Eng 12 or Lit 12 is less than 75%, it is recommended that they register in “Writing 098: Preparation for University Writing and the LPI” prior to retaking the LPI again. This is a non-credit course offered by UBC Continuing Studies. http://www.writingcentre.ubc.ca/academic/w098.html
Page 15 of 20
This requirement may be satisfied with one of Principles of Math 11, Pre-Calculus 11 or
Foundations of Math 12.
This requirement may be satisfied with one of either Principles of Math 12 or Pre-Calculus
12 (but not both).
UBC has a foreign language 11 requirement for all applicants. Students can meet the
Language 11 requirement by:
Taking the course at the grade 11 or grade 12 level (beginner’s language course will
NOT be accepted);
Write a Challenge Exam; or
If the student’s first day in BC (this also include Canadian students from other provinces) is in Grade 10, then the student must obtain a letter from the School
Principal stating when he/she started in the BC school system. This provides an exemption for the student.
If the student completed Grade 9 in another country where English is not the language of instruction, then that student is eligible for External language credits provided they forward the school with proper documentation i.e. Grade 8 + 9 report card. Grade 8 – External language Grade 11. Grade 9 – External language Grade
12.
Students may not use challenge exams in place of approved grade 12 courses in the calculation of their admission average. However, challenge exams may be used to satisfy program pre-requisites. For example, at UBC Vancouver, a French 12 challenge course grade may be used to satisfy the BC high school Language 11 general admission requirement and/or the Language Degree Requirement in the Faculty of Arts.
If there are extenuating circumstances contact UBC Undergraduate Admissions for special consideration. https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/vancouver/cdnhs.ezc

SFU starts receiving applications for admission in October. Students should apply through the ApplyBC website at www.applybc.ca
.
Qualified students can receive an early admission offer as soon as winter break. After you apply online, you will receive an acknowledgement from SFU with instructions on selfreporting your grades. You will be asked to report all of your final grade 11 and Term 1 or final grade 12 marks in mid-December.
What a student reports online will be verified in May when the Ministry of Education sends the student’s marks electronically to SFU. Please be accurate in what you report; it must be the same as what the Ministry will send in May.
All early offers of admission to SFU are conditional based on the student maintaining the minimum grade point average (GPA) required by the program to which they have applied and/or completing specific required courses. SFU receives final marks from the Ministry of
Education in July and confirms all offers then.
All applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in English before they’re admitted to SFU. Some of the ways students can meet this requirement includes:
Have studied full-time in English in Canada for the last 3 years prior to applying for admission. Exemption from this requirement can be on the following:
Write and achieve a minimum score on a test of English language proficiency that evaluates skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing. Examples include: IELTS
– minimum score of 6.0 in the Academic Modules. TOEFL iBT - Overall score: 88
(Reading: 20, Listening: 20, Writing: 20, Speaking: 20)
Note, ESL students have to meet the same Language and Literacy Requirement (outlined above) as non-ESL students.
Students applying to undergraduate programs at SFU are required to present a minimum final blended grade of 60% in Grade 12 English in order to gain admission.
All students must successfully complete at least two writing-intensive (W) courses to graduate with a bachelor's degree.
To register in a writing intensive course student must achieve one of the following:
1.
Students with a blended English 12 (or English Lit 12 or English 12 First Peoples) grade of 75% or higher may enroll directly in a “W” course.
2.
Students with a blended English 12 grade between 60% to 74% must write the LPI and achieve a score of 4 on the essay portion of the LPI and a minimum score of 50% on all parts of the LPI to be eligible to register in a W course. Otherwise students must register directly into Foundations of Academic Literacy (FAL X99).
3.
International students with a blended English 12 grade between 60% to 74% must write the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam and achieve a minimum score of 6.5 on the Academic Modules and a minimum subscore of 6.0 on each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
SFU has a second language 11 requirement. Students with a language 12, but no language
11, will meet this requirement. A Beginner’s Language 11 or 12 course is acceptable.
For admission purposes, students need at least 60% in one of the following courses:
Principals of Math 11, Foundations of Math 11, Pre-Calculus 11, Principles of Math 12,
Applications of Math 12 and Calculus 12. If a student has taken either Principles of Math 12 or Applications of Math 12 with a grade higher than the minimum required for Principles of
Math 11, then the higher-level course will be used for admission purposes. Note, each faculty may have specific math requirements. For instance, the Beedie School of Business requires Principles of Math 12.
Note, international students have to meet the same quantitative requirements as outlined above.
Students may use challenge exams in place of approved grade 12 courses in the calculation of their admission average.
The above information from SFU was updated in Sept 2011. Students and parents are advised that information could change without notice. What is the purpose of the LPI?
The purpose of the LPI is to provide information about an individual’s competency in
English. The LPI is a requirement for enrolling in first year English at UBC and for placement into the appropriate English course at SFU, UVic, Langara and Capilano
University.
Note, the LPI is not an admission requirement but rather a means to assess which
English course you may register in your first year.
What does the LPI test?
It tests your functional literacy. The test consists of 4 parts comprising 80 points: identifying errors in sentence structure (10 points); identifying errors in English usage (10 points); evaluating and/or summarizing short prose passages (20 points); and writing a 300- to 400-word argumentative essay on one of three topics (40 points). The essay is marked holistically: expression, organization, and content are weighted equally.
Can I be exempt from writing the LPI?
Exemptions vary by institution:
UBC: if the student obtains a Term 2 grade in English 12 of at least 80%, they are not required to write the LPI.
SFU: students need to obtain a final grade in English 12 (school mark plus provincial exam mark) of at least 75%
UVIC: if the student obtains a Term 2 grade in English 12 of at least 86%, they will not be required to write the LPI.
Langara: final grade in English 12 of at least 80% required
Please note that the LPI may not fulfill the English Facility Requirement for students whose first language is not English. These students may still need to take the TOEFL or IELTS, which is a condition for admission.
When should I write the LPI?
It is recommended that grade 12 students write the LPI at their school in April in order to ensure that the English Language requirement is met for the BC university or college to which the student has applied and prior to registering for university/college courses in June. If you leave it too late, all of the available LPI test sittings may be full. In that case, you will NOT be able to take first year English and you will delay your program completion by up to a year.

● The maximum number of U.S./International applications that your Counsellor will complete is four (4). Any more than this means your search is too broad and needs to be narrowed. Common Applications completed online only count as one (1) application.
● Only under extenuating circumstances, and with plenty of notice, will your
Counsellor be able to fill in additional U.S./International application forms.
● Remember you can only attend 1 college or university next year, so spend your time wisely, and carefully narrow your search to your top 3 choices.
Confirm that you have the financial resources to pay for your tuition and all related costs.
Some US schools may offer you financial aid, but you must apply for this when you submit your application.
● You MUST give your Counsellor a minimum of three (3) weeks to fill in
U.S./International application forms. Please remember that we do NOT work during school vacations.
Give teachers a minimum of three weeks to fill in US application forms and to provide letters of reference. The more time you give the teachers, the better quality your letters of reference will be.
Provide stamped, addressed envelopes and fill in as much of your personal information as possible before giving these forms to someone to fill in for you. We will NOT fill in your personal demographic information for you. Please ensure that you have followed the instructions carefully. Each application has a specific format.
Normally, use block letting and black ink for all applications.
If you would like your applications and supporting documents sent by a courier, your
Counsellor can assist in storing your documents in the safe until they are ready to be packaged up. The school can order you a courier envelope in for the collection of your documents. You can drop it at Staples after it is sealed and signed by the
Counsellor.
