Music Ministry Coordinator Job Description
The Music Ministry Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating with the
Worship Team, the musical worship program (and other musical events) of Calvary
CRC of Lowell; in order to support and enrich the congregation’s worship of God. This
includes accompanying worship services and directing the praise teams and
volunteer musicians.
Style of Worship
At Calvary we hold dear the traditional creeds and teachings of the Christian
Reformed Church. Musically we are 'relaxed traditional', singing mostly hymns,
with an interest in including a greater variety of music and worship styles. We
believe music is to be a pleasing offering of praise to God the Father and Jesus
Christ which uplifts the hearts of the congregation through the Holy Spirit.
Job Responsibilities
 Demonstrate consensus building skills
o Will work together with the Worship Team and the Elders.
o Will work with the Worship Team to come to consensus about musical
orientation, thematic flow, song and liturgical selections and order of
worship.
 Coordinate the music and musicians for all worship services including:
o Sunday AM and PM services
o Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Day, Good Friday
o Weddings and Funerals, (if requested) unless on scheduled vacation,
honorariums negotiated with families. (Line item negotiable.)
o Accompany or secure accompanist for all worship services.
 Coordinate the Music Ministry Program
o Provide musical direction to the adult, young adult, and youth praise
teams, including coordinating Sunday morning rehearsals as needed.
o Utilize the talents and skills of team members, motivating and
challenging team members to lead the congregation in worship with
commitment and excellence.
o Recruitment and supervision of musicians, drawing talent from within
the congregation before seeking outside musicians.

o Screen new volunteers through our protection policy if the volunteer





will be working with children in any musical activities.
o Maintain the church music library, and acquire music as necessary
within church budget restrictions.
o Selection or creation of new musical groups.
o Meet with musicians and or vocalists for choosing music scores and for
practice.
o Willing and able to work with students and adults.
o Coordinate (oversee) music for weekly Sunday School and Sunday
School Christmas Program, as well as special music by Sunday School
children.
o Coordinate music for VBS.
Update church council on status of music ministry and needs.
Be a music resource for the various programs and groups sponsored by Calvary
CRC.
Be a resource for parents seeking private music lessons for their children.
Participate in continuing education or personal development of your musical
performing and leadership skills.
Candidate is encouraged to become a member of Calvary CRC and participate
in fellowship activities, however it is not mandatory.
Personal Characteristics
Applicants must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is demonstrable
through both word and deed, while possessing the gifts necessary to, not only lead
His people in worship, but the interpersonal gifts essential in organizing, leading, and
effectively dealing with the many different personalities in a congregation. The
applicant must possess a theologically reformed and biblical worldview, be willing to
adhere to the vision and values of Calvary CRC, and preferably be a member in good
standing of a Christian Reformed, Presbyterian or Reformed church.
Professional Requirements and Skills

Comfortable with the worship style of Calvary CRC; which is reflective of both
traditional hymns and contemporary music, while seeking to be faithful to God’s
Word and the specific scripture passage used in the worship service.
 Trained musician and vocalist, with proficient skills on the piano and or organ.
 Knowledge of additional instruments desired but not required.
 Have a working knowledge of church music.

Demonstrated ability to work with others in a team environment, fit in well
with the members of the Worship Team and the Pastor.
 Knowledgeable in leading musical ensembles, including choir, praise teams,
groups of volunteer instrumentalists of all ages and abilities from Sunday school
children, to music students, as well as congregational singing.
 Ability to lead and develop the volunteer musicians and vocalists presently in
the church, and coordinate new church members to participate in the worship
services as part of praise teams, choirs, soloists, instrumental ensembles and
special music.
 Knowledge of church sound and video systems desired but not mandatory.
Education:


Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred in worship music arts.
Also considered: Studying for a Music degree, and or have equivalent
knowledge and training.
Accountable to:
The Music Ministry Coordinator is directly accountable to, and under the
supervision of, the Elders and Pastor of Calvary CRC and works in coordination
with the worship team. After an initial quarterly evaluation, an annual
evaluation of performance will be conducted near the anniversary of
employment.
Compensation:
 Salary: $15,000.00 to $17,000.00 per year, depending on experience and
education.
 Leave: 4 weeks of unpaid vacation which will include 4 Sundays, spread
throughout the year, with no more than two consecutive weeks. Vacation
dates will not include the weeks of or proceeding Christmas and Easter.
 Other than on Vacation, the Music Coordinator is expected to be present at
the majority of the 48 a.m. services throughout the year. The coordinator is
responsible to make sure someone plays on a Sunday p.m. service and to play
if necessary.
 Time Commitment: 20 hours per week, flexible over the monthly pay period.
 Person is to keep a monthly log of hours and activities.

 For worship and music: $425.00 annually, subject to change if needed.
 For piano tuning and organ maintenance: as needed

Initial Interview:
 Review resume and job expectations.
 Come with a prepared piece to play.
 Discussion of qualifications, characteristics and interpersonal skills.
Second Interview:
 Prepare and play a piece of music that you love
 Play several hymns from Calvary’s hymnal (1997 Celebration Hymnal)
 Pull something from Calvary’s music library to play (sight read)
Final Interview
 Prepare for a working interview (scripture and sermon title will be supplied)
 Meet with the Worship Team to prepare for a typical worship service.
 Demonstrate knowledge of liturgy, music selection, worship flow and
consensus building skills.
