English I Honors Mrs. Kane, Phillipsburg High School, 2010-2011 REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS BE PROMPT- Better three hours too soon than a minute too late. ~William Shakespeare Be IN YOUR SEAT by the time class begins. Lateness = OP detention. If you are late to class for any reason, you must bring a written note from the person who caused you to be late. Lavatory procedures: If you must use the facilities during class time, secure permission to leave the room first and sign in and sign out. You are limited to two visits a marking period. BE PREPARED- All things are ready, if our minds be so. ~William Shakespeare Each day, bring: TWO pens or pencils (black or blue ink only please), a three-ring binder (your class notebook), the applicable textbooks, and an open mind. Be ready to think, question, and interpret. You will NOT be permitted to return to your locker during class to retrieve forgotten items. This includes, most especially, homework and projects. Do your homework. Daily homework will not be accepted late, without exception. In fact, any missing assignment results in a one point lowering of the final grade at the conclusion of the marking period. BE POLITE- Life be not so short but that there is always time for courtesy. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson One person talks at a time so that ALL voices may be heard. Work cooperatively with your classmates in a polite and courteous manner. Profanity, abusive language, anti-social behavior, bullying and harassment will NOT be tolerated. Every student has the right to work in a safe, supportive class. Consider this your haven from the chaos of the halls, locker rooms, cafeteria, etc. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your actions. YOUR behavior is YOUR own choice. Grades are earned, not given. Work hard; it will pay off. Procedures Each class begins with a warm-up/do now. Get to work on your warmup IMMEDIATELY upon entering class. Follow all school rules while in class (dress code, no phones, no food/drink, etc.). Straighten the room before dismissal. The bell does not dismiss class; the teacher does. Academics I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn. - Albert Einstein Homework Homework must be completed in its entirety, whether it be 9% or 90% complete, it is still incomplete, no? Make certain all answers have appropriate and attempted responses. Please note well: any missing portions of a homework assignment result in a grade of a 0 for that assignment. Work missed due to an absence for any reason must be made up within five days. Homework, projects, etc. will only be accepted upon return with an excused absence and a phone call or email. Any work (homework, classwork, assessment, etc.) not made up within five days will result in a grade of zero for that assignment. Please come to me after class or during OP with any questions or problems. Homework is extremely important! While the work may only count for five points, if not completed it will result in a point lower in your final marking period score. Tests and Quizzes Any talking of any kind during a quiz or test will result in a grade of zero. Tests or quizzes missed due to absence for any reason must be made up within five OP days (and if accompanied with an excused absence and a call or email). It is your responsibility to approach the teacher to make up any quiz or test you have missed. Any test or quiz not completed within each marking period will result in a grade of zero for that test or quiz. Grades Grades will be calculated on a point system. Your grade is the number of points earned divided by the number of points possible. The point value of each assignment, quiz, test, project will be determined and communicated by the teacher when the assignment if given. Low or failing grades will be reported to parents/guardians. Grades will not be discussed in class. If you have any questions regarding such, please visit room 248 during OP. I will be happy to discuss your work and the grade assessed in an individual conference. If you need help at any time, please express your need to me appropriately after class or during OP. TOGETHER, we will make this a successful year!
