French 1B course description period 6 teacher: Julie Krug room: 309 phone: 944-6840 X8309 (direct line / voicemail) e-mail: jkrug@wcsd.k12.ca.us webpage : www.walnutcreeksd.org/wci (click on « staff directory » then « Krug, Julie ») conference period (3rd): Mon,Tu,Th,Fri 10:04-10:49 (Wed 10:49-11:28) What you will learn: (chapters 5-12) food – grocery store, marché, café / restaurant vocabulary and conversations table setting table etiquette (!) clothing – vocabulary and shopping conversations body parts vocabulary airport and train station vocabulary daily routine vocabulary more sports and vacation vocabulary verbs: “re” , “ir”, aller (to go), faire (to do, make), prendre (to take, get), apprendre (to learn), comprendre (to understand), vouloir (to want), pouvoir (to be able to), mettre (to put), voir (to see), croire (to believe), dire (to say), lire (to read), écrire (to write), boire (to drink), devoir (to have to), recevoir (to receive), savoir and connaître (to know), reflexive verbs, past tense of avoir and être verbs grammatical concepts: using different forms of quel (which) , tout (all) and ce (this/that), à (to/at) and de (of/from), expressing oneself using future tense and past tense, using forms of de (definite articles), comparative adjectives, and if we have time, direct object pronouns. culture: closer look at school and home life of French teenagers, strong emphasis on French etiquette, French speaking countries in Africa possible long-term assignments / projects: French 1a “révision” interview, skits (café, marché, clothing store), clothing catalogue, Une Journée Dans Ma Vie. supplies: (I will provide these for you – you do not need to buy them!) -- a thin notebook* (petit cahier / carnet) for taking notes on verbs and grammatical concepts -- a zip loc bag* to keep your flashcards in all year *these items need to be kept in your backpack, taken to and from school EVERYDAY -- Bon Voyage textbook, which should stay at home your grade will be determined by: -- oral and written quizzes (1-3 times per week), chapter tests and occasional large assignments (abouty 95%) -- overall effort and participation, including homework completion (about 5%) homework: Monday through Thursday -- 10-15 minutes per day* – memorize any new material learned in class that day and/or review “old” vocabulary through FLASHCARDS. Most written work will be done in class but is occasionally assigned as homework. (*number of minutes needed to practice words varies by student) Good attendance is CRUCIAL to your success in this class. If you are absent, you must check my homework page at www.walnutcreeksd.org/wci and/or contact a classmate to find out and learn what you’ve missed. Promotion to high school French 2: Please note that only “A” and “B” students will be promoted to a higher level of French next year. You should do fine if you: ___ CONSISTENTLY REVIEW NEW AND OLD VOCABULARY ___ stay organized (flashcards, notes) ___ have good attendance ___ catch yourself up very quickly after being absent ___ participate ATTENTIVELY in class ___ do your homework / KNOW YOUR WORDS! French magazine (optional): Allons-y (Let’s Go) is a fun activity-based Scholastic magazine for beginning French students. A yearly subscription includes 6 issues and is available for $9. We will look through samples of Allons-y in class so you can decide if you would like to subscribe. If so, you need to bring $9 to me (cash or check – check made payable to WCI) by Wednesday, September 5th.
