GRADES
I grade on a point system. Your assignments will fall into the following categories:
• Homework: usually a worksheet or packet
In addition to the work assigned in class, I expect you to study your vocabulary a minimum of 5-10 minutes each evening.
Thorough knowledge of the words will require more practice than you will get in class.
• Classwork: exercises, often from the textbook, done individually or in collaboration with other students
• Communicative activities: to practice fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
• Vocabulary quizzes
• Chapter tests
• Various projects and oral presentations
• Midterm and Final: 5 percent each of your final class grade
• Exams will contain extra credit questions worth 1-2 points. There may be occasional opportunities for additional extra
credit throughout the semester.
• Grading scale:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60=69%
F = below 60%
MATERIALS
Keep your papers from this class organized in a three-ring binder: either a single binder for the class or a division of a larger
binder. You will be given a small notebook at the beginning of this class that you will use to take notes in class. I expect you to
have your notes, vocabulary lists, notebook paper, homework, and a pen or pencil in class with you every day. You will receive a
ZERO for any assignments that you are unable to complete because you are unprepared.
MAKE-UP WORK
When you miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what notes and assignments you missed. If you know in advance that you
will miss my class, see me ahead of time to get your work. Plan to make up quizzes during the enrichment immediately following
your absence from school. I will only accept late work for a given chapter until the day of the chapter test.
ADDITIONAL POLICIES and procedures
• Be inside the classroom when the bell rings or you will be marked tardy.
• I will absolutely not permit any form of cheating or copying. If I discover that you have cheated on an assignment or quiz,
you will receive a zero on the assignment and I will notify your parents.
• Bullying in any form is unacceptable. This includes rude remarks, refusal to work with someone else, or simply a bad
attitude toward a classmate. These behaviors will result in an immediate referral to the administration.
• Leave your food, drinks (other than water), hats, cell phones, CD players, iPods, etc., in your backpack or at home (not in
your pocket). Keep your sweatshirt hoods off during class.
• Take your bathroom break in between blocks or as soon as you get to class. I will permit you to go during “down” times in
class if it is an emergency. When you leave the classroom, you must sign out and back in.
IF YOU NEED a little extra practice…
I am available for tutoring help after school by appointment. If you have a question or just want a little extra practice, please see
me before you find yourself really lost. Even one or two tutoring sessions can make a big difference in your comprehension of the
material and therefore in your grade.
Please work with me to make this semester a successful one for you; talk to me if you have any questions or concerns about the
class, the material, a grade or an assignment. The best way to reach me outside of class is via email at
jeffrey.eshleman@pennmanor.net. You or your parents can also get in touch with me by stopping by the Foreign Language wing
or leaving me a voicemail at 872-9520 x1514.
