While unemployed I focused on learning Linux by installing it on a
spare home PC. During this period, I accomplished the following:









Installed RedHat Linux 7.0 (Kernel 2.2.16).
Installed the Hercules S/390 emulator.
Installed MVS 3.8j via a turnkey system built by Volker Bandke
and available on CD from the CBT website. I successfully IPLed
MVS 3.8j on my PC.
Installed ftape which is a driver for a parallel port streamer tape
backup unit.
Installed taper which is a streamer tape backup application.
Installed 3 x Netgear ethernet PCI cards and setup a 3 node LAN
with Linux as the server and 2 x WIN98 clients.
Setup wu-ftpd on the Linux machine.
Setup Samba server on the Linux machine. Now able to use
WIN98 machines as Samba clients to access various file shares
on the Linux machine as well as a printer share.
My ISP asked me to research LDAP for him and I installed
OpenLDAP 2.0.11 from the sources and customised a schema file
to reflect my ISP’s login authentication details.

Participate in the upgrade of a 4 member Sysplex from MVS
5.2.2 to OS/390 2.6.
Install OS/390 maintenance that allowed HFSs (and PDSEs) to be
non-SMS managed and implemented non-SMS managed HFSs on
the OS/390 2.6 systems.
Perform configuration planning including HCD work for the
relocation of around 20 clients on 10 machines from Sydney to
Victoria. The relocation process made prominent use of:

Configuration, Performance and DRP Group).
Major activities:
 Perform and co-ordinate configuration (HCD/HCM) changes on a
number of CMOS and non-CMOS processors. I was responsible for
configuration changes on 15 CMOS and 6 non-CMOS processors
covering 5 sites and spanning around 50 MVS systems.
 The configuration changes just mentioned include defining and
relocating LPARs, defining DASD (including RVA), CTCs, OSA, 3494s
(ATLs) and Virtual Tape Servers (VTSs).

 Developed documentation and standards for the configuration
process.
 Organised, co-ordinated and participated in Disaster Recovery
tests for a number of clients.
 Consulted in the outsourcing (MVS transition) of a number of
clients including Macquarie Bank.
 Installed OS/390 1.3 and the OS/390 Web Server on a Sysprog
LPAR and built a demonstration Web Server which described the
MVS component of IBM GSA's operations and included maps
showing sites, photographs of MVS support personnel, how to make
Requests for Service on the MVS group etc.
 Customised Open Edition on Sysprog LPAR.
 Installed and customised IXFP the product used to manage and
report on RVA.
