World Language: Level 1 Chinese (Course at a Glance) Quarter One Quarter Two Quarter Three Quarter Four Unit One: Theme: School, Classmates and Teachers (Personal Life/Social Life) 9 weeks Unit Two: Theme: Hanging out with My Friends (Student Life/Social Life) 4-5 weeks Unit Four: Theme: Four Seasons of the Year (Lifestyle/Leisure Time) 4-5 weeks Unit Six: Theme: Sports and Health (Lifestyle/Leisure Time and Vacation) 8-10 weeks In Unit One, students will learn to say greetings and farewell expressions, introduce oneself and others, express gratitude and inquire about others. Students will begin to acquire knowledge of the formula of Chinese phonetics (Pinyin), tones, the formation and strokes of Chinese characters, and the characteristics of Chinese names. In Unit Two, students will talk about matters relating to friends, inquire about someone’s identity and the ownership of certain things, look for people or things, and express one’s mood and feelings. They will continue to practice Chinese phonetics (Pinyin) and the stroke order of Chinese characters. They will also learn about the Chinese counting system, ball games, different languages, school supplies, measure words/classifiers for nouns and limited food items. In Unit Four students will talk about time, dates, seasons and weather related topics, inquiring about time, daily routine and plans, discussing about holidays, and describing weathers. They will continue learning about and reviewing some special structures of the Chinese language, such as using a noun or an adjective as predicate. Unit Three: Theme: Family and I (Home Life/Lifestyle) 4-5 weeks Unit Five: Theme: Food and Clothing (Lifestyle/Home Life) 4-5 weeks In Unit Three, students will talk about age and family related matters, inquiring about other’s age and where a person is from, understanding others intention, talking about pets and neighbors, asking other’s address and telling one’s own address, and describing one’s family members. They will continue practice Chinese phonetics (Pinyin) and the stroke order of Chinese characters. They will also learn about countries, professions and more measure words/classifiers for nouns. In Unit Five, students will talk about food, Chinese New Year, shopping, colors, clothing, and descriptions. They will learn about dining out in a restaurant, holiday customs, shopping for groceries, how to discuss about color and clothing, and how to describe the appearance of people. In Unit Six, students will talk about sickness, health and sports related matters. They will learn about seeing a doctor, dentist, asking and giving directions, discuss about participating in sports and places for vacations.
