Remarks: Legends & Landmarks of Old Adams County
The Ghost of Wickerham Inn
By Stephen Kelley
Down through the years a number of people have asked me to repeat the ghost story I wrote about the Wickerham
Inn in 1982. Since it is now the time of year for that type of story, here goes:
Many have claimed to have personally seen the strange specter, although most witnesses demand
anonymity. All attest to seeing the ghost of a man–a headless man–who haunts the old Wickerham Inn to this very
day. It seems there are as many versions to this legend as there are people who relate it. The common theme to the
various stories is a tormented spirit of a decapitated man who wanders through the ancient brick structure seeking
that elusive, eternal peace for which all spirits yearn.
This legend of Old Adams County is one of the few ghost stories of which I am aware that is based upon historical
facts. The story began in the very early nineteenth century. It took place during the days the Wickerham Inn was
being used as a stagecoach stop. Although some accounts place these events as early as 1804, stagecoach travel on
Zane’s Trace was not initiated until 1806. Knowing this, we can assume the following story occurred sometime after
the year 1806 and before 1842 when stagecoaches were discontinued on Zane’s Trace through Adams County.
The story is told that one evening as the stage pulled to a stop in front of the inn, a new stage driver was observed by
the keepers of the hostelry. After the evening meal was finished, this new driver retired early to his room on the
second floor. Reportedly, he was carrying a large sum of money on his person. During the dark hours of the night, a
disturbance in the driver’s room was heard by some of the guests. Despite this commotion, no one investigated the
matter.
Early the next morning, as everyone was seated around the breakfast table, the absence of the driver was
conspicuous. Someone, history does not record who, was sent upstairs to find the reason for the driver’s tardiness.
A gruesome sight was uncovered in the room. Blood stains were splattered on the walls and on the bedclothes. The
furniture was in disarray and a large pool of blood was soaking into the floor. Mysteriously, the driver could not be
found. A rumor soon started that he had been brutally murdered with his head being cut off and thrown into a nearby
pond.
Within a short time after the grisly crime was committed, many persons in the neighborhood claimed seeing an
apparition in the upstairs windows of the inn. It was the distinct outline of a headless man–the murdered stage driver
seeking his head, no doubt!
As the years passed, many others reported seeing the phantom and the legend grew. One version of the story, being
repeated in the early 1910s included a ghost of a little white dog accompanying the headless specter!
Down through the years, as the legend was spread by word of mouth, it became increasingly difficult to separate fact
from fiction. What, if anything, had really happened those long years ago at the Wickerham Inn? Was there really a
murder? If so, what had happened to the body? Only tell-tale blood stains on the floor and reported sightings of the
headless ghost remained to perpetuate the spooky story.
In 1922 an astounding discovery was made at the inn which made critics of the legend think twice. It was that year
the old inn was being renovated and modernized. Among other remodeling projects, a new furnace was being
installed to provide central heating. The furnace was going to be placed in the old cellar under the home. It proved to
be too tall which prompted the removal of the stone floor in the cellar to provide additional clearance. Under the
slabs of stone, in a crypt of lime, workmen found bones–human bones! The owners of the property were amazed to
discover a skeleton, complete with the exception of the skull! Even skeptics had to admit there was some evidence
to the legend, and the long missing stage driver had been found at last.
The mystery of who perpetrated this ghastly malefaction remains today. The person or persons responsible for the
driver’s death and macabre burial will probably forever remain unknown. And the ghost? He continues to prowl the

premises of the old wayside inn seeking his severed head and perhaps...vengeance!

25 Maria Magdalena PLATTER. Born on 11 May 1767 in Frederick County, Maryland. 50 Maria Magdalena died
in Adams County, Ohio, on 26 Aug 1839; she was 72. Buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Adams County, Ohio.
Birthdate is listed as: 11 Mar 176751
Research: From the Family Bible of Peter Platter, eldest son of Joseph Platter, and last know in the possession of
Rev. Robert S. Platter, of Shreve, Ohio, recorded in German and hand written. It was reported in the pamphlet "A
HISTORY OF THE PLATTER FAMILY FROM ABOUT THE YEAR SIXTEEN HUNDRED TO THE
PRESENT TIME" published 1 MAY 1919 By Rev. David Platter.
"1725, May the 13, Anno Domini, Joseph Platter was born in Nassau, Saarbrucken, Nauwillerhof; in the year of
Christ, 1730, April the 15th, Anna Barbara Luckebilen was born in Nassau, Dantziller; and on the 28th day of May,
1757, she and Joseph Platter were married, and lived in Nassau, Saarbrucken, where the follow three children were
born;
Johann Peter, September 21st, 1758. Sponsors at baptism: Peter Deusch, and his wife, Christiana Mauria. Baptized
by Pastor Manza. Joanna Christian, born Nov. 14, 1760. Sponsors: Daniel Schafer, and his wife, Christina.
Baptized by Pastor Manza. Elizabeth, Born Jan. 17th, 1764. Died in infancy.

17th, 1773. The sponsors were George Kromer and his wife, Wilhelmina. Baptized by Pastor Mallauier."
Also in the same pamphlet the following:
"Jacob Platter being the oldest son, would be the one most likely to remain in the old country. Nicholas, the second
son, and Joseph, the third son, came to America. Nicholas came first.
In Vol. 17, page 310 ser. 3 Pa. Archives the name of Niklaus Platter appears in a list of immigrants arriving at the
port of Baltimore in the ship Bennet Galley, John Wadham, Master, Aug. 13th, 1750. This was 15 years before
Joseph Platter came. In the old Evangelical Church record in Dudweiler, the date of the death of Jacob Platter and
Christian Platter is entered; that of Nicholas and Joseph is not, for the reason that these two sons had come to
America............At any rate Joseph and his wife Barbara, and their two boys, Peter, 7, and Christian, 5, came across
the sea in 1765, entering probably at the port of Baltimore, and went directly to Fredric County, Maryland, and
settled there."

depopulated land on the Saar river. He was first working in a saw-mill in the town of Scheidt, where he also was
married and his first children were born. In 1697 he came to the manorial farm in Sulzbach, where he could proof
himself in agriculture. In the year 1712, Count Ludwig Kraft gave him the Neuweiler properties (this is what your
letter you referenced was also about). He had to pay 60 Gulden (currency back then) and was allowed to keep only
20 cows and 10 pigs. Michael Blatter was already 56 years old than he came to Neuweiler. In this pioneering time
