- Media Information Press Release 25 May 2004 PR32/04 BUSINESS START UP COSTS HIT ALL-TIME LOW Entrepreneurs encouraged by record low cost of entry The cost of starting a business has fallen by more than half in the past four years to an all-time low of £4,000, according to research from PC World Business, the specialist business IT provider. The research suggests that there has never been a better time to start a business, with the average cost of IT equipment, furniture and office supplies for a four-person company plummeting from £10,000 in 2000 to less than £4,000 in 2004. The average start up business in the UK employs four people, and the most expensive initial outlay is IT infrastructure. With the rapid fall in the cost of computers and peripherals in recent years, entrepreneurs now face extremely affordable set up costs, without the need for loans or heavy investment. A typical four person company requires computers and monitors, office software, fax, photocopier, printer, network server, cables, telephones, desks, chairs and basic office stationery. According to PC World Business, this can cost as little as £3,400. An additional £600 will be required for legal fees and first month’s rent, adding up to a modest £4,000. In comparison, the average start up cost for a four person company in 2002 with similar equipment was more than £7,000; in 2000 it was nearly £10,000. John Stevens, PC World Business’ head of marketing, commented, “Technology is one of the most important decisions a start-up business has to make. As businesses increasingly rely on technology to improve efficiency and customer service this is good news for entrepreneurs trying to start a business.” -ENDSFor further information regarding PC World Business, please contact: Joshua Van Raalte or Richard Leonard Brazil Tel: 01865 725 269 (firstname)@agencybrazil.com Wendy Talbot PC World Business 0161 447 3216 wendy.talbot@pcwb.com About PC World Business PC World Business is a leading specialist provider of IT solutions to business and the public sector.
