(1) The classification of viruses into families based on shared properties and the physical and biological properties of these viruses, particularly those that cause human diseases. (2) The aspects of virus replication that each virus must accomplish (such as entry into a cell, replication of its genome, egress from the cell) and the variety of ways in which these steps can be achieved. (3) The ways in which viruses interact with and manipulate cell components and processes in order to enhance their replication. (4) Where appropriate, the experimental approaches that have been (or are being) used to address questions related to the first three objectives. 8:00 AM MICRO 276: General and Molecular Virology Date Day Lecture Topic Lecturer 1 2 3 Jan 2 Jan 3 Jan 4 Wed Thu Fri Overview of the virus world – 1 Overview of the virus world – 2 Nature and characterization of viral DNA genomes Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan 4 5 6 7 8 Jan 7 Jan 8 Jan 9 Jan 10 Jan 11 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Nature and characterization of viral RNA genomes Icosahedral capsids and icosadeltahedral symmetry Helical capsids, complex capsids, and other viral structures Virus purification and methods Cultivation, assays, quantitation, and molecular methods Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. Kim 9 10 11 12 13 Jan 14 Jan 15 Jan 16 Jan 17 Jan 18 Jan 19 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Functions and characterization of viral proteins – 1 Functions and characterization of viral proteins – 2 Viral genetics and molecular genetics – 1 Viral genetics and molecular genetics – 2 Virus attachment and entry – 1 EXAM 1 (lectures 1 - 10) Dr. Bodily Dr. Bodily Dr. Kamil Dr. Kamil Dr. Muggeridge 14 15 16 17 Jan 21 Jan 22 Jan 23 Jan 24 Jan 25 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri ML King Holiday Virus attachment and entry – 2 Virus attachment and entry – 3 Herpesviruses: overview Herpesviridae: alphaherpesvirinae Dr. Muggeridge Dr. Muggeridge Dr. Hutt-Fletcher Dr. Hutt-Fletcher 18 19 20 21 22 Jan 28 Jan 29 Jan 30 Jan 31 Feb 1 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Herpesviridae: betaherpesvirinae Herpesviridae: gammaherpesvirinae Herpesvirus latency – 1 Herpesvirus latency – 2 Adenoviridae – 1 Dr. Yurochko Dr. Scott Dr. Scott Dr. Scott Dr. Hutt-Fletcher 23 24 25 26 27 Feb 4 Feb 5 Feb 6 Feb 7 Feb 8 Feb 9 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Adenoviridae – 2 Parvoviridae Poxviridae – 1 Poxviridae – 2 Polyomaviridae EXAM 2 (lectures 11 - 24) Dr. Hutt-Fletcher Dr. Scott Dr. Sapp Dr. Sapp Dr. Sapp 28 29 30 31 Feb 11 Feb 12 Feb 13 Feb 14 Feb 15 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Mardi Gras Holiday Papillomaviridae Retroviridae: simple viruses Retroviridae: deltaretroviruses Retroviridae: lentiviruses – 1 Dr. Sapp Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. O’Callaghan 32 33 34 35 36 Feb 18 Feb 19 Feb 20 Feb 21 Feb 22 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Retroviridae: lentiviruses – 2 Hepadnaviridae – 1 Hepadnaviridae – 2 Overview of RNA virus replication strategies Picornaviridae – 1 Dr. O’Callaghan Dr. Hutt-Fletcher Dr. Hutt-Fletcher Dr. Muggeridge Dr. Tsunoda 37 Feb 25 Mon Picornaviridae – 2 Dr. Tsunoda 38 39 40 41 Feb 26 Feb 27 Feb 28 Mar 1 Mar 2 Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Flaviviridae Togaviridae Astroviridae and Caliciviridae Hepeviridae and hepatitis delta virus EXAM 3 (lectures 25 - 37) Dr. Tsunoda Dr. Tsunoda Dr. Kamil Dr. Bodily 42 43 44 45 46 Mar 4 Mar 5 Mar 6 Mar 7 Mar 8 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Coronaviridae Paramyxoviridae Rhabdo-, Filo-, and Bornaviridae Orthomyxoviridae – 1 Orthomyxoviridae – 2 Dr. Sapp Dr. Tsunoda Dr. Arnold Dr. Muggeridge Dr. Muggeridge 47 48 49 50 51 Mar 11 Mar 12 Mar 13 Mar 14 Mar 15 Mar 23 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Reoviridae Arenaviridae and Bunyaviridae Antiviral drugs Innate immune response to viruses – 1 Innate immune response to viruses – 2 EXAM 4 (lectures 38 - 51) Dr. Arnold Dr. Arnold Dr. Muggeridge Dr. Yurochko Dr. Yurochko
