Information for New Faculty Computing and Telecommunications www.knox.edu/computer Help Desk - Ext. 7700 - Any computing question can be addressed to the Help Desk which is staffed from 8-6 M-Th and 8-5 on Fridays during the term. If they are unable to fix the problem, it will be turned over to Computer Center staff who will contact you as soon as possible. For PC office desktop support, contact Nancy Hall at x7814 or nhall@knox.edu . For Macintosh office desktop support contact Vicky Romano at x7805 or vromano@knox.edu. Electronic Mail E-mail – Your email address is set up with your initial password as your employee ID number. You will be prompted to change your password when you first log in. You can also change your password at the website if you first log in is from off campus. You will have to change your password at least every 90 days. You may not use the previous three passwords. You should keep passwords to eight characters in order to log into the network from Macs. http://www.knox.edu/password --We support Thunderbird for email. --There is SPAM filtering software called Barracuda. You will receive a daily summary of blocked messages. If you review the summary of messages and find a message you would like delivered to your inbox, click on Deliver, accept certificates to log into Barracuda, then select Deliver next to that message. If you select Whitelist, any further messages from the address will be delivered in the future regardless of whether it is scored as SPAM or not. Mail in Barracuda will be deleted automatically after 21 days. Contact the Help Desk at x7700 with any additional questions. Off-Campus email access-Webmail -You can access your Knox e-mail from off-campus by using http://webmail.knox.edu. You will want to set up Thunderbird preferences on your home computers by using the following documentation http://www.knox.edu/computer Click on the Email link on the left then the Thunderbird Mail Settings on the left. E-mail lists - There are e-mail lists for academic departments, administrative offices, buildings, majors, and advisees. One caveat: you will show up on the email lists at the same time that you show up on the directory (See “Directory Listing” below for timing. The list of general abbreviations follows, but the general formats are: math-dept@knox.edu (reaches faculty only) busi-ofc@knox.edu (staff) smc-bldg@knox.edu (faculty and staff) math-major@knox.edu (students) math-minor@knox.edu (students) sjones-adv@knox.edu (advisor and student advisees) Page 1 We also have e-mail lists for reaching faculty and staff: faculty_dist@knox.edu reaches all faculty and some administrators involved in academic support facstaff_dist@knox.edu reaches all faculty and staff staff_dist@knox.edu will reach all staff sal-staff_dist@knox.edu will reach all salaried staff hr-staff_dist@knox.edu will reach all hourly staff Viruses-We do check all incoming mail for viruses, but you should still practice “safe e-mail”: Do not download files unless you know what they are and why you got them. The Computer Center maintains anti-virus software on college owned computers. Software and Server Accounts Home Account - Everyone on campus has a home account on a server that can be used to back up information from your desktop, or as a way to share information between your home machine and your office. This account is set to 100 mb. Please contact the Help Desk at x7700 for information on how to access this account. For PC office desktop support, contact Nancy Hall at x7814 or nhall@knox.edu . For Macintosh office desktop support contact Vicky Romano at x7805 or vromano@knox.edu. Quotas - There are quotas for both your server-based mail (75 mb) and your home account (100 mb). If you exceed the quotas on either you will start getting nasty messages from the system. After a couple days mail may start bouncing. Keep your inbox to a reasonable size (for example, move mail to folders in your local mail as you read it) and let us know if you are having problems. One of the most common problems is simply forgetting to empty the trash periodically. If you have an academic reason to ask for more space, contact the Help Desk at x7700. Software available on servers - A wide variety of software is available on the servers for PCs and Macs. If you have any questions on how to access these applications from your office computer, contact the Help Desk at x7700. For a list of available software see the end of this document. Software needed for courses -If there is a specific application you need for a course, let us know as early as possible. Sean Riedel sends out a request each May for software requests for the following academic year. If you know what you would like to accomplish, but aren't sure how or what to use, contact Vicky Romano or Nancy Hall for assistance. Computer Workshops-Workshops can be scheduled during the term for the students in your courses. Workshops can include, but are not limited, to Snap Survey software, Microsoft Publisher for creating posters, Moodle course management, Powerpoint, and website creation. Contact Vicky Romano at x7805 or vromano@knox.edu to request and schedule workshops for students in your courses or for yourself. Page 2 Software for home-There are CDs on reserve in the Libraries that can be used to install Microsoft Office on your home computer. You have the right to use the current version of Office at home as long as you are on the faculty at Knox. Web pages -We support and offer training on Nvu. Course web pages are hosted on a separate part of the server. For information, contact Vicky Romano or Nancy Hall. Online Course or personal calendar: BrownBear iCal software is available for creating personal, departmental, or course online calendars which are browser based. Contact Nancy Hall at x7814 or nhall@knox.edu for more information and for online calendar requests. Course Management Software-Moodle course management is available for all courses. Contact Vicky Romano (vromano@knox.edu x7805) to request set up for a course and access to Moodle for you and for your students. Telephone and Directories Telephone - Your phone should be up and working. You should have received a packet in campus mail containing information on your voicemail and long distance. If you have NOT received this please call Deb Marty at x7171. Please remember to set your name and voice mail greetings. (Or call Deb and we can have the switchboard operator record them for you.) Directory Listing - you can check out your directory listing (or anyone else's) on-line at http://www.knox.edu/directory. You will need your ID and password from your e-mail account. Note that your listing will not show up until (a) September 1 when your contract officially starts; and (b) you have filled out all your personnel and payroll information and it has been set up in the computer. If you see any problems with your address or other information, you can click on the link provided and report the problem. Faces-There is an online “book” showing the names and photographs of all students, faculty, and staff. It can be reached at http://deptorg.knox.edu/faces Equipment and Facilities Desktop Computers-We support both Macs and Windows. Students overwhelmingly use PCs. Wireless Networking-All buildings--and much of the green-space--on campus are covered by a wireless network. Set up information can be found on the Computer Center web page at http://www.knox.edu/computer then click on the Going Wireless link on the left. Special equipment - There are a couple of special printers in the Computer Center. If you think you might like to use either or both, please contact us (access is limited in order to control costs). Plotter (a.k.a. "poster printer") - color ink-jet printer in the computer center that will print posters up to about 3' x 5'. Typically used for research or honors presentations. Located in Computer Center Page 3 Color Laser printer - located in the Stellyes Lab in the Computer Center High Volume Printing - we have a laser printer in the Computer Center that can print 20+ pages per minute, with two sided copies. If you need to print a long document (like your dissertation), contact us. In general, multiple copies should be done with photocopiers. Scanners - These are available in labs and in some departments. We don't give these out automatically, but if you are a frequent user call Vicky Romano and we can provide you with one. Laptop Computers-Laptops can be borrowed for class presentations or if you are taking a trip to a conference. You can request a reservation online at http://deptorg.knox.edu/computer/laptop. If you have a personal laptop you would like to use on campus, contact the Help Desk at x7700 for information regarding how to set up a personal laptop to be used on campus. Computer Projection -If you are in a classroom with projection, contact Vicky Romano or Nancy Hall if you have any questions. If you need to arrange for one-time projection, contact the A/V office or go online to http://deptorg.knox.edu/av Computer labs - Students have access to four primary labs (in addition to a number of departmental facilities). Three double as computer classrooms. Centel (GDH), Stellyes (SMC), and Caterpillar (SMC) are all open seven days a week. The Founders lab in Seymour Union is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week during the term. In addition, there is a small lab inside the Science Library. Computer labs reservations - The Centel (GDH), Stellyes (SMC), and Caterpillar (SMC) classrooms are available for classes when you need them. Each has full projection with 20-24 student work stations. Please note Caterpillar is a Linux lab. Lab reservations on-line http://calendar.knox.edu/deptorg/labs or contact Nancy Hall. Printing-Any printing to the network printers will be charged back to your department at the rate of 5 cents per page—the same as for photocopying. Some faculty have ink jet printers in their offices. When there is an option, be aware that the cost per page of an ink jet copy is about four to five times as much as for a Xerox printed copy—and the department gets charged for all the ink jet ink!
