Voorhees Middle School Mr. Alexander Technology Education WORKSHEET FOR TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Topic: CO2 Race Car Construction Step 1 in the design phase: Students will complete a series of 3 Thumbnail sketches. Students must come up with 3 different designs to satisfy the criteria for this part of the assignment. In order to do this it is necessary to follow guidelines. I am expecting 3 top views and 3 side views of each of the 3 different CO2 race car designed. That means that there will be a total of 12 thumbnail sketches or 3 sets of thumbnail sketches. Instructor approval necessary in order to proceed on to the next phase of the CO2 car design process. Step 2 in the design phase: Students will complete a series of 1 rough sketch. Students will meet with the instructor and discuss which thumbnail sketches are best suited for this part of the assignment. The instructor and the student will decide on one of the best thumbnail sketches, which are then expected to be further refined and used for completion of each set of rough sketch drawings. These drawings are also expected to contain a top and side view of each of the best CO2 race car designs. Instructor approval necessary in order to proceed on to the next phase of the CO2 car design process. Step 3 in the design phase: Teams will, post completion of phase 1 & 2 of the design process, choose one of each student’s best designs and refine these drawings in the preliminary process. This process will lead to the final set of working drawings. Top and side views are a must in this process. Step 4 involves the final drawing. The final drawing is also referred to as the working drawing and can only be worked on after successful completion of all the other required drawings. This unit will involve the top and side views as with the others. Step 5 Prototype: This is an actual foam body cut from a Styrofoam blank. Instructor approval required to advance on to the final project. Step 6 Wood CO2 race car: This is the actual final project, the CO2 race car, made of wood. In order to move on to this phase students must have successfully completed the 4 step design phase/process and construction of the prototype foam body of the car. Step 7. After successful completion of the design phase, along with the successful completion of the prototype CO2 race cars, students will meet with the instructor for approval of all work and receive their wood CO2 race car blanks. We will discuss in class wood blank construction methods. The instructor and the student's will decide on the necessary methods that best suit their individual needs and expectations. Wood CO2 race car blanks are distributed to student's that satisfy all criteria for design approval and successful completion of prototype construction. All steps must be completed with satisfactory results in order to start working on their final projects, the wood CO2 race cars.
