Participation Expectations and Guidelines:
1) The policy of the Writing Group is not to read dissertations in progress or papers for
current classes.
2) Papers from completed courses can be brought to the group for ideas on developing it
into a presentation or publication.
3) Participants who submit papers for feedback should attend regularly and share their
insights with other participants.
4) Each Participant can submit a piece of writing to the group for feedback either during the
Fall or Spring term.
a) Papers will be sent to the group as an MS Word attachment three to ten days before
the session.
b) Participants can submit as many papers for critique as they want as long as the
paper is to be submitted to a journal, conference, or for a grant.
c) Drafts can be in the form of outlines, proposals (conference, grant, book, and book
chapter), conference papers, or manuscripts.
d) Each author must supply the group with guidance on how to read the piece: what
audience is the piece for? Where is it being submitted? What type of outlet is it?
What type of feedback is being sought? Does the author have time lines for
submitting?
5) Each Participant will critique the manuscripts for discussion at each session and
participate in the discussion about the manuscript.
a) Participants are free to use track changes and comments functions in MS Word, to
write notes on a hard copy of the paper, or to write a narrative providing useful
feedback to improve conceptualizing, organization, format, grammar, etc.
6) Participants may be asked to prepare a brief session on a topic (of their choice) related
to writing for publication.
7) Guest speakers will be given the opportunity to share their work in progress with us and
receive feedback.
Accommodation Policy: I will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations
when warranted and requested. The instructor and Participant will work with the Disability
Services Office (or counselor) to determine effective and appropriate accommodations. It is
the responsibility of any Participant needing an accommodation to inform the institution and
the instructor of their disability, how it creates a learning impediment, and the type of
accommodation needed.
