Diversity Science - Mrs. Eye Phone: 314-506-9771 Email: aeye@fergflor.org Website: www.edline.net or http://mrseye.weebly.com Welcome back to another exciting school year! This year in science you will study chemistry, weather and our atmosphere, earth science, and cells. Our goal this semester is to work cooperatively to learn more about ourselves and the world around us. Accomplishing this will require cooperation. You will have to work hard independently, but you will also have to work effectively with other students and me. I am excited to learn about you and work with you this year! - Mrs. Eye Laboratory Expectations: How We Agree To Learn Together 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. We will keep the lab energy positive all the time. We, all of us, will participate 100% of the time. We will keep an open mind and try new things. We will use appropriate language. We will follow the guidelines and rules established in our CK handbook. 6. We will be mindful of others Simply remember to be respectful, be accountable, be positive, and safe!!! (Cougar R.A.P.S.) Grading Procedures How will I be graded? A: 90 – 100, B: 80 – 90, C: 70 – 80, D: 60 – 70, F: 59 & Below Semester grades are a running total of both semester quarters and weighted according to the following breakdown: Formative Assessments (classwork, participation, and quizzes) (40%) Summative Assessments (certain labs, oral presentations, research papers, and exams) (40%) Homework (10%) Final Exam (10%) What is my grade? Students and parents/guardians may access science grades daily on www.edline.net (you must have your access code). Late Assignments Assignments are due on the date given to students. If an assignment is late 20% will be deducted for each day past the original due date for the first two days. If an assignment is more than five days late no credit will be given. (Due date: 100%, 2nd day: 80%, 3rd day: 60%, 4th day: 40%, 5th day: 20%, 6th day: 0%) Missing Assignments If you miss school then it is your responsibility to find out what you missed while you were out. All assignments can be found on our class website at http://mrseye.weebly.com or the classroom binder. You will have the same number of days to make up your work as the number of days you were absent. If you were absent on Monday and Tuesday, you will have to finish your makeup work and turn it in on Friday. If you turn in your makeup work past this deadline the policy for late assignments will apply. Always be in class if you are not seriously ill. When turning in makeup assignments, at the top of the page you will need to make a note of the day(s) you were absent. Skipping class results in a zero on any assignment due during that period. Missing Quizzes & Exams If you miss a quiz, exam, or presentation you must make an appointment to take the exam on the day you return to school. If you do not make up the exam within one week then the grade will become a zero. When you need help or a conference Please come and see me if you need help or a conference and I will do everything I can to set up a time that will work with your schedule. Before and after school appointments will be scheduled on an as needed basis during a time that is convenient to both of us. Always feel comfortable asking for help that is why I am here. Ask as many questions as possible there is no stupid question. Attendance Come to school! Don’t stay home unless you’re sick! Make doctor/dental appointments before or after school, if possible. If not, miss a class in which you are doing well. Don’t miss a class that’s hard for you. You’ll fall behind. Tardies You are expected to be in the laboratory when the bell rings. If you miss an assignment as a result of your tardy you will not be allowed to make up that assignment. Consequences for tardiness will be assigned in accordance with the student handbook. Absences If a student misses class, regardless of whether or not the absence was excused, the student is still responsible for obtaining the missing work. o Missing assignments can be found on the classroom website at http://mrseye.weebly.com or in the classroom binder. Consequences for excessive absences will be assigned in accordance with the student handbook Permission to Leave the Laboratory Once you have entered the lab you will not be allowed to leave unless there is an emergency. All personal (restroom, locker) or school business needs to be taken care of before school, after school, at lunch, or during the passing period. Students will only be allowed two bathroom passes per quarter. Anytime you leave the classroom you must have a hall pass. Classroom Procedures Entering the Classroom Be in the room before the bell rings and go quietly to your seat. Have your comp book, planner, pencil, and any other materials ready. Begin work on your Journal on the projector screen or on your desk. Pay attention to the allotted time. Quietly work on this activity until I signal for your attention. Ending Class Clean up and return all supplies to their appropriate locations. Work on your Daily Reflection quietly at your desk until the bell rings. When the bell rings put away your binder and wait for the teacher’s signal to exit the classroom. Academic Contract I understand that science requires much practice, focus, and study. I understand that I may have to get supplemental help to overcome any difficulties I may encounter. I am willing to do the academic work required to succeed. I understand that I must bring the necessary supplies each day (binder, paper, pencil, calculator, planner) I understand that there is a "zero tolerance" policy on cheating. I understand that I must follow all school policies found in our school handbook and the classroom expectations. I understand that cell phones & other electronic devices are not allowed out during lab time, and that they will be confiscated & given to a principal if used during class. Plus, having a cell phone out during an exam will result in a "zero" for that exam. I understand that I must come dressed appropriately for school. I understand that I must respect myself, my classmates, and my teacher. Safety Contract I understand the following safety rules, and will follow them, all the time, while in the laboratory: Follow the oral and written instructions provided by the instructor. No unauthorized or unsupervised experimenting allowed No food or drink, or tasting of chemicals No horseplay or teasing is allowed Wear safety goggles, aprons, and/or gloves when instructed Discard chemicals as instructed I understand that any violation of these rules can result in one or more of the following: A "zero" for the lab Loss of lab privileges Contact of parents Contact of administration (with referral) Materials: PLEASE HAVE ALL MATERIALS BY: ___________August 13, 2012_________ Composition Notebook (several may be needed during the school year as you run out of pages) Colored Pencils Pencil and Eraser Scientific Calculator Student Planner Science requires a lot of effort and hard work.
