http://www.usmma.edu/about/communications/message-usmma-schedule-admiral-helis
I know I speak for the entire Kings Point community when I express my frustration and disappointment with the current
government shutdown and its impact on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. While all the service academies are being forced to
make changes as a result, the impact on the USMMA is the most severe due to the fact that our faculty and staff are nearly all
civilians, and therefore subject to the shutdown furloughs that do not impact active duty military personnel.
As a result, the Academy has significantly reduced operations and administrative support programs have ceased. Up until now,
we have kept midshipmen on campus in the hopes that the shutdown would be short-lived. This lack of certainty has created
tremendous strain on our Midshipmen, their families and the Academy itself.
To provide some certainty to staff, faculty and Midshipmen, we have made the decision to move up our scheduled fall break from
its original date of November 1-11 to take place beginning Friday, October 4 and run through Monday, October 14. By “swapping”
fall break from November to next week, we can both offer a greater degree of certainty and minimize the disruptive impact the
shutdown is having on our academic calendar.
If the shutdown continues through next week and we did not take this step, we would have to cancel fall break altogether to make
up the lost academic days. Because the Academy’s academic calendar is nearly year-round, we have only 19 “break” days during
the year to make up missed classes.
While we believe this step is helpful, we recognize, and regret, that it still has an impact on Midshipmen, parents, faculty and staff
who have made plans for the scheduled November break, and we appreciate the understanding of the faculty union, in accepting
this change.
Leadership at the Academy, the Maritime Administration and the Department of Transportation are working on a variety of options
to address a longer-term government shutdown, should one occur.
The USMMA is closely monitoring developments during the shutdown, and will keep Midshipmen informed during the break via
the academy website and through our Command Duty Office.
Thank you for your patience during this incredibly difficult time.

3. Questions and Answers on the USMMA Schedule
Attribution: USMMA Website – www.usmma.edu ACADEMY COMMUNICATIONS http://www.usmma.edu/communications
Media Advisory: October 3, 2013, Marcie Katcher, Director of External Affairs, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
http://www.usmma.edu/about/communications/questions-and-answers-usmma-schedule
Q: What if the government is still shutdown at the end of fall break?
A: Midshipman, faculty and staff should monitor the Academy website for updates and can stay informed by contacting the
Command Duty Officer who is available 24-hours a day. While we hope the shutdown will be resolved by the end of the newlyscheduled break, if the shutdown is still in place, we will be forced to shut down the Academy on October 15.
Q: Will intercollegiate athletic events still take place during the shutdown?
A: USMMA coaches are civilian employees, and like their academic counterparts, are subject to furlough under a shutdown due to
a lapse in appropriations, so we are unable to participate in intercollegiate athletic events during the government shutdown.
Ref: USMMA KPA-CPA News 100713
Q: Who is paying to send Midshipmen home during fall break? What happens to tickets and plans made during the
original fall break?
A: Travel costs associated with the rescheduled Fall Break are the responsibility of the Midshipmen, as they would be in normal
circumstances. We regret any additional costs they may incur for changing travel plans, but believe that moving the Fall Break
was the best option for both providing certainty and preserving the Fall Break itself and the academic year.
Q: Will Midshipmen who don’t have or can’t make travel plans during the fall break be able to remain on campus?
A: Yes. As normally done during breaks in the academic schedule, we will maintain a select number of staff on campus to
support Midshipmen needs, including the dining hall facilities.
Q: If Midshipmen buy plane tickets to return to campus when the Fall Break is over, but the government shutdown is still
in place, who will reimburse them for their tickets?
A: If the government shutdown lasts beyond October 15, the Academy will pay to fly Midshipmen from their home of record back
to campus once the government shutdown is over. However, the Academy is not responsible for paying to fly Midshipmen back to
campus from other locations or from home at the end of the rescheduled Fall Break, should the government shutdown end before
October 15.
Q: If the Academy shuts down on October 15, what will it do for Midshipmen who are unable to relocate home?
A: Should that be the case, the Academy will work with the Midshipmen to find an alternative solution.
Q: What about Midshipmen who are away during their sea year?
A: The 225 Midshipmen currently at sea will be allowed to continue their training. As they complete their scheduled sea time, the
USMMA will bring them back to campus, or to their homes, depending on the status of the government shutdown at that time.
Some of the internships they were scheduled to participate in will also still be conducted.
Q: The other service academies are continuing to operate. Why can’t the USMMA?
A: Many of the USMMA’s faculty and staff are civilians, and therefore subject to shutdown furloughs, where the majority of the
staffs at the other service academies are active duty military and not subject to furlough.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 30, 2013 – Today, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) marks its 70th
anniversary. The Academy, which began as a World War II Cadet Corps training facility, was dedicated as the United States
Merchant Marine Academy on this date in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine
as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy,” said Roosevelt.

During this past weekend, USMMA celebrated the Academy’s 70-year anniversary during Homecoming 2013. The Acting Maritime
Administrator, Paul Jaenichen and Superintendent, James A. Helis, Ph.D. were there to welcome home alumni and their families
and to honor the memories of those lost. One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing 16 members of the class of 1943 in
formation on the on the 50-yard line behind the USMMA Regimental Color Guard as they carried the Battle Standard. In the
Academy’s first graduating class 1,164 midshipmen graduated, but 142 midshipmen were killed during their sea-year training
period. The Regimental Battle Standard which is always carried by the Regimental Color Guard honors these 142 undergraduates
who laid down their lives for their country.
Another highlight of the weekend was when the Academy community rendered honors to four of the female graduates of the class
of 1978, Francis Yates, Terry Olsen Preston, Ivy Barton Suter and Nancy Wagner. USMMA’s Class of 1978 was the first class
from any service Academy to include female graduates. “These women are great examples of what it is to be a Kings Pointer,”
said Helis. “They have dedicated their lives to service and leadership. They have served this nation as Merchant Marine Officers,
as Navy Officers and as pioneers in industry. We honor them and all Kings Pointers who have served this great nation for the past
70 years in peace and war.”
USMMA graduates have served in every conflict since World War II. The nine ribbons attached to the top of the Standard
represent the service ribbon bars earned by members of the Regiment during World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War,
and the Persian Gulf War. USMMA is the only Federal Service Academy privileged to carry a Regimental Battle Standard.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., September 25, 2013 — Today, maritime professionals and hiring managers from 42 companies, federal
agencies, and maritime-related organizations participated in the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) annual
career fair, Sea Fair 2013, held in O’Hara Hall.
The event, coordinated by the Department of Professional Development and Career Services, introduced maritime unions, vessel
owners and operators, drillships and rigs, federal shipyards and agencies to the Regiment of Midshipmen. The 500 or more
midshipmen who participated were introduced to opportunities for military, federal and maritime service.

The company representatives who traveled from as far away as Alaska expressed a very strong desire to hire USMMA graduates.
Mr. Tom Lamm, Manager of Fleet Development at Vane Brothers said, “We return to USMMA each year because we know that
Kings Point graduates make excellent officers. We know that when we hire a Kings Pointer we can expect a well-trained, safetyconscious professional, who will become a leader as his or her career progresses.”
The Academy maintains near 100 percent job placement, annually. Commander Preston DeJean, Assistant Dean for Academic
Support Programs was extremely pleased by the number of participants offering obligation-fulfilling employment. “Having so
many companies collectively at one event presents the midshipmen with grand opportunities to engage in meaningful, career
enhancing work,” said DeJean.

Congress passed the landmark Merchant Marine Act in 1936, and two years later, the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps was
established. The first training was given at temporary facilities until the Academy's permanent site in Kings Point, New York was
acquired in early 1942. Construction of the Academy began immediately, and 15 months later the task was virtually completed.
The Academy was dedicated on September 30, 1943, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who noted that "the Academy serves
the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis the Navy."
"To educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will
serve America's marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war."

Gary Poulin (Hauppauge, NY)
Kings Point, NY – The USMMA soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against NYU Tuesday night at Brooks Stadium. Gary Poulin
(Hauppauge, NY) and his counterpart Forrest Sexton both made three saves to notch a clean sheet. USMMA outshot the Violets
12-8 and played the overtime periods down a man after a red card in the final seconds of regulation.
"I am really pleased with the play of our team tonight," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "After being outplayed in the first half,
we came out and put NYU under a great deal of pressure. We created a number of chances and only some excellent NYU
goalkeeping kept us off the scoreboard. When we went down a man, our defenders continued to play hard and smart, and limited
our opponents to only a few chances at goal. We're happy with our effort and our performance, and are hoping that it carries over
to the weekend as we continue conference play."

NYU (6-1-1) controlled the ball in the initial stages of the first half but the Mariners defense played tough and did not allow a shot
off the pressure. Kelechukwu Eboh tallied three shots in the first half but two were off target and the third was blocked by the
USMMA defense. The Violets best chance came with just over three minutes to play in the period as a corner kick led to a Tino
Karadassis shot from point blank range. However, Poulin calmly came up with the save to keep it scoreless.
Merchant Marine (4-4-1) stayed compact early and did not generate a shot in the opening 45 minutes. Kyle Arestivo (Northport,
NY) appeared to find space at the top of the 18-yard box in the 25th minute but had the ball tackled away just before he could fire
on net. The two sides would head into halftime still locked in a 0-0 tie.
USMMA had the better chances to start the second half as Tanner Nestler (Asheville, NC) put a shot narrowly outside the right
post. Nick Vogel (Mechanicsburg, PA) appeared to give the Mariners the breakthrough goal seven minutes into the period with a
header directly in front of goal. Sexton made a leaping save to deny Merchant Marine, punching the ball over the crossbar.
Poulin made the next great save of the match, turning away a NYU attempt in the 70th minute. Deniz Oncu sent a header on
frame following a Violets throw in. Poulin dove to his right to catch the shot and prevent a rebound. Nestler found an opportunity
with 15 minutes left in regulation but Sexton pushed his strong shot just to the right of the post.
The Mariners entered overtime playing with 10 players after having a red card issued with 16 seconds on the clock in the second
half. Both sides had a look at a game winner late in the first overtime but Bryan Walsh for NYU and Vogel for USMMA just missed
the target as the contest went into double overtime.
It took only one minute of the second overtime for the Violets to find space as Tim Goldman ripped a shot on net from 20 yards
out. However, Poulin had it lined up from the start and made the save on the line drive to keep the contest at level pegging.
Neither team would be able to generate another chance as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Mariners return to action Friday night for a Landmark Conference contest at Goucher, kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.

Freshman Darin Zacharias anchored the Mariners defense with a match high 13 digs
New York, NY - The USMMA volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of NYU Wednesday night. Freshman Darin
Zacharias anchored the Mariners defense with a match high 13 digs. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) paced the attack with nine
kills and also added 10 digs.
Merchant Marine (8-3) made only two errors in the first set and tallied a .167 hitting percentage. However, the Violets were more
efficient and posted 12 kills en route to a 25-15 victory in the opening frame.
NYU (12-1) got double-digit kills from Gigi Morally and Alexandria Mao with the latter recording 14 kills and 13 digs. The Mariners
chipped away at a 21-16 deficit and found themselves down 23-21 following a Palma kill. USMMA would committ two staight
service errors as the Violets took the second set, 25-22.

set. NYU closed out the 3-0 sweep with a 25-19 triumph in the third set.

Setting the Scene... Merchant Marine welcomes defending Liberty League champion and 2012 NCAA Quarterfinalists #7 Hobart
to Brooks Stadium Saturday afternoon during Homecoming Weekend. The Mariners are 3-0 for the first time since 1997 after a
gritty 7-6 road victory at Maritime (NY). The Statesmen hold a 2-0 record this season, most recently downing Utica, 34-21.
Saturday's clash marks the start of the Liberty League slate as both teams have wrapped up the non-conference portion of their
schedule.
Series History... Hobart currently leads the all-time series against the Mariners, 9-4. The Statesmen knocked-off USMMA at
Boswell Field, 42-21, in 2012 but the Mariners were within one possession at halftime. In that game, quarterback Luke Stidham
rushed for 161 yards as the visitors racked up 231 yards on the ground. Merchant Marine has dropped nine straight games to
Hobart since joining the Liberty League, last defeating the Statesmen back in 1970.
McDaniels Tops NCAA Statistics... Quarterback Matthew McDaniels (Malverne, NY) currently leads Division III in rushing
yards, totaling 568 yards and six touchdowns in his first three career games under center. The sophomore has gained at least
125 yards in every game this season and is a two-time Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week. McDaniels is averaging
6.76 yards per carry and has also thrown two touchdown passes in 2013.
Chasing "300"... The Merchant Marine football program currently sits at 299 victories, one shy of a milestone 300. USMMA's
50th, 100th, 150th, 200th, and 250th program wins have all come in the friendly confines of Brooks Stadium. In those games, only
one opponent scored in double digits with the Mariners posting two shutouts in milestone victories. USMMA is 6-1 in their last
seven games at home.
Defense stands tall... The Mariners defense allowed a touchdown to Maritime (NY) on the opening possession, but would pitch
a shutout against the Privateers for the remainder of the game. USMMA has dominated the second half of games early in 2013,
outscoring opponents 34-10 in the final thirty minutes. The Merchant Marine defense has not surrendered a fourth quarter
touchdown this year. Opponents have only converted on third or fourth down 30% of the time against the Mariners in the second
half.

Johnson Named Rookie of the Week... Rubyn Johnson (Jacksonville, FL) was tabbed as the Liberty League Rookie of the
Week following the Mariners 7-6 victory over Maritime (NY). The rookie corner sealed the Mariners win with his first career
interception with just 2:10 remaining in regulation. Johnson also added three tackles and a 26-yard punt return to his stat line.
Around The Liberty League... The Liberty League posted a 4-4 record last week as Merchant Marine, Hobart, Springfield, and
RPI all earned a win. There are currently four undefeated teams remaining in the league with the Mariners, Engineers, and Pride
all sitting at 3-0. Hobart was tabbed seventh in the latest NCAA Division III rankings with another Liberty League team,
Springfield, receiving votes for the first time this season. This week will see all eight members in their conference openers as
Springfield vs. Rochester, RPI vs. WPI, and St. Lawrence vs. Union complete the Week 4 docket.
Up Next... Next up, the Mariners take to the road for a 1:00 pm Liberty League contest against RPI. Merchant Marine will play
back-to-back games away from Brooks Stadium before returning home on October 19th for a meeting with Springfield.

Towson, MD - The USMMA soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Goucher Friday night in Landmark Conference action. The
Gophers scored on an own goal in the first half and added a penalty kick marker from Nate Margolis in the second half. The
setback is the Mariners first-ever loss to the Gophers in Landmark play and is USMMA's first defeat in four matches.
"We are very disappointed with our effort tonight," said Mariners Head Coach Michael Smolens. "After playing some high level
soccer the last two matches, Goucher outworked us and got the victory. We didn't create enough good chances at goal and were
not solid on defense. While we're not happy with the result we will need to work hard to get back on track next week."
Goucher (6-3-1, 1-0-0 Landmark) got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute after a Tate Becker cross was inadvertently deflected
in by a Mariner defender. The miscue gave the Gophers a 1-0 advantage as well as the momentum. That would be the only tally
of the opening stanza as the home team took the one-goal cushion into halftime.
Merchant Marine (4-5-1, 1-1-0 Landmark) put more pressure on the Goucher goalie in the second half, registering five shots on
goal. However, Nicholas Stolarz was up to the task for the Gophers and made six total saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Goucher got its insurance goal to seal the 2-0 victory in the 80th minute after Margolis deposited a penalty kick into the back of the
net after being fouled in the penalty area.
The USMMA soccer team will return to the pitch again on October 2 for a non-conference tilt at Manhattanvile.

17. #5 Hobart Upends Merchant Marine, 24-8

Kings Point, NY – The USMMA football team came out on the wrong end of a 24-8 decision Saturday afternoon against #5 Hobart
in the team's Liberty League opener. The Mariner defense forced two turnovers in the second half but would be unable to rally
back after the Statesmen scored the game's first 24 points. Matthew McDaniels (Malverne, NY) entered Saturday afternoon as
the leading rusher in the nation but the Hobart defense limited the USMMA option offense and kept the sophomore quarterback to
only 65 yards and one touchdown.
Hobart (3-0, 1-0 Liberty) forced the Mariners into a three-and-out to start the game and immediately marched into the red zone.
However, the USMMA defense came up with a stop and the Statesmen settled for a 30-yard field goal from Sean Kirshe to make
it 3-0. Hobart would eventually get the game's first touchdown with 6:28 remaining the second half on a five-yard Conner Hartigan
run.
Merchant Marine (3-1, 0-1 Liberty) had its best drive of the opening half on the ensuing possession and found itself with a firstand-goal at the eight yard line. The Mariners used both of their remaining timeouts in the final 35 seconds but were unable to
punch the ball into the end zone. The field goal unit had to rush onto the field and a Daniel Kennedy (Youngstown, OH) kick from
23 yards was pushed right as time expired, giving the visitors a 10-0 halftime advantage.
The Statesmen needed only two plays and 45 seconds to score on their first drive of the second half. The first play was an 18yard run from Steven Webb, who finished with 93 yards on 18 carries. Patrick Conlan then completed a 37-yard touchdown pass
to Yosh Karbowinczak to make it 17-0, Hobart. Conlan's stat line for the game included 9-of-20 in the air for 129 yards and one
touchdown along with 49 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
As the game went into the fourth quarter Hobart brought out the punt team for a fourth-and-13 at its own 13 yard line. However, a
roughing the kicker penalty would extend the drive and three plays later Conlan found room in the middle of the USMMA defense
for a 53-yard touchdown scramble that made it 24-0.
The Mariners finally broke through with 3:33 remaining in the fourth quarter after a nine-play, 53-yard drive ended with a one-yard
McDaniels touchdown run. The big play of the march also came from the sophomore quarterback on a 27-yard run on third-and10. Matthew Berglund (North Kingstown, RI) laid out for a diving catch to complete the two-point conversion and close the deficit
to 24-8.
Troy Robinson recovered the onside kick for the Statesmen and a Parker Thelander two-yard carry on fourth-and-one sealed the
victory for #5 Hobart. Hobart has now won 10 straight meetings against the Mariners since Merchant Marine joined the Liberty
League.
Scott Cokeley (Ukiah, CA) and Michael Biehn (The Woodlands, TX) both recorded double-digit tackles for the Mariners defense
with 12 and 11, respectively. Dan Pierce (Caldwell, NJ) notched four tackles along with a forced fumble and fumble recovery
following his strip of Webb in the third quarter. USMMA converted on only 33 percent of its third downs (5-of-15) but won the time
of possession battle by holding the ball for 32:17.
The USMMA football team returns to action on the road next Saturday for a 1:00 pm kick-off against RPI.

Patchogue, NY – The USMMA volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over host St. Joseph's (LI) and a 3-0 sweep of NYU Poly at a
Saturday afternoon tri-match. Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, FL) slammed down 20 kills along with a sizzling .417 hitting percentage
over the two matches. Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) also lit up the stat sheet with 17 kills and 27 digs in the Mariners two
wins.
Merchant Marine (10-3) started off the day with a tight first set against the Eagles but ultimately took the opening game 28-26,
following back-to-back kills from Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) and Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO). The Mariners would bounce
back after dropping the second set with decisive 25-17 and 25-14 triumphs in the final two frames to claim the match, 3-1.
Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 36 assists versus St. Joseph's (LI) and freshman Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA)
reached double-digits with 10 digs. In the middle of the attack, Macbeth supplied 12 kills and two blocks while Jennifer Perkins
(North Attleboro, MA) added eight kills and two blocks of her own. The Mariners finished the match by making only two errors in
the fourth set and hitting at an outstanding .500 clip.
Palma paced the USMMA offense in the Mariners second win over NYU Poly this season, registering 11 kills. Paige Queen
(Falcon, CO) got the setting duties in the second match and distributed 30 assists. The Mariners racked up 17 service aces in
both matches as Danhof and Zacharias both tallied four against the Blue Jays.
Merchant Marine again posted a .500 hitting percentage in the final game of a match, routing NYU Poly, 25-8 in the third set. The
Blue Jays were limited to just 10 kills for the match, including only one in final set.
The USMMA volleyball team has now won four of its last five matches and is next scheduled to host Purchase State Wednesday
night inside O'Hara Hall.

19. Federal shutdown shutters classes at USMMA
Attribution: WorkBoat Magazine, www.WorkBoat.com, October 7, 2013 By By Pamela Glass

With the federal government shutdown entering a second week and no resolution in sight, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
has moved a scheduled fall break from November to this week in order to avoid major disruptions to its academic calendar.
The shutdown's impact has hit the Merchant Marine Academy harder than the other service academies, as the majority of faculty
and staff are civilian employees of the Transportation Department and as such are subject to the federal furloughs, Rear Adm.
James A. Helis, academy superintendent, said in a statement on the school's website.
Classes at the other service academies are operating largely at normal speed. They are run by active duty military personnel who
are allowed to stay on the job. Support services, commissaries, libraries and media labs that are run by civilians have closed,
however.
USMMA midshipmen at Kings Point, N.Y., have been out of classes since Oct. 1. The dining halls and housing remain open.
"The lack of certainty [over the shutdown] has created tremendous strain on our midshipmen, their families and the academy
itself," Helis said.
The fall break, normally scheduled for Nov. 1-11, is now running Oct. 4-14. Should the shutdown persist after Oct.15, the academy
will close. The school will pay to fly midshipmen back from their homes to campus once the shutdown is over, according to a
statement on the school’s website.
Helis said the academy is working with DOT to come up with another plan should there be a long-term government shutdown.
The 225 midshipmen currently doing sea duty are not affected.
All athletic events have also been canceled until the budget impasse in Washington is resolved, while athletic contests at the other
service academies are continuing as scheduled.
The USMMA National Parent Association has reached out to members of Congress and asked for an exemption from the
academy that would allow the school to reopen.
Meanwhile, classes at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., have not been disrupted because a special exemption
from the Department of Homeland Security has allowed civilian instructors to continue to teach. Classes are also continuing at the
Army, Air Force and Naval academies.

20. Kings Point's Rushing King
Attribution: Great Neck Patch, Posted by Jason Molinet (Editor), September 30, 2013 at 04:00 PM
http://greatneck.patch.com/groups/sports/p/kings-points-rushing-king
Sophomore QB from Malverne sparks U.S. Merchant Marine Academy football team to 3-1 start.
Kings Point has a new rushing king.
Sophomore quarterback Matt McDaniels leads all of NCAA Division III in rushing yards four games into the season for U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy. More importantly, the Mariners are off to a 3-1 start and a factor in the Liberty League.
Leading the way has been McDaniels, a Malverne native and Kellenberg graduate. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound LIer has 633 yards –
58 yards better than anyone else in D-III – and seven touchdowns on 106 carries.
The Mariners lost to Hobart Saturday, but USMMA is on track to surpass last season's 4-5 record. Its 3-0 start was the program's
best in 15 seasons.
It's McDaniels, who played special teams as a freshman, who has the Merchant Marine on the fast track. He's a two-time
conference offensive player of the week running the option offense.
USMMA sophomore quarterback Matt McDaniels has been exceptional.
And he's not just getting it done with his legs. McDaniels threw a 25-yard TD pass in a 7-6 win over Maritime two weeks ago.
He also set a new Academy record by rushing for 199 yards in the second half of a win over Susquehanna.
It's nothing new. McDaniels led Kellenberg to the CHSFL Class AA finals appearance as a senior in 2011, running roughshod over
the Catholic league. He had nearly 900 yards rushing in three playoff games, including 345 in a 22-21 loss to Fordham Prep.
A 24-8 loss to nationally-ranked Hobart brought USMMA back to earth. But another stiff test awaits. RPI, off to a 3-1 start, hosts
USMMA Saturday in Troy.
Win or lose, there's no doubt whose hands the ball will be in.

23. USMMA to focus more on brownwater
Attribution: WorkBoat Magazine, www.WorkBoat.com, News Log October 1, 2013 By Pamela Glass
Diversified Business Communications, 121 Free Street, Portland, ME 04101 Telephone: 978-671-0444

As part of reforms to its curriculum, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is developing a set of elective courses to teach
midshipmen about the brownwater shipping industry.
The Kings Point, N.Y., federal maritime academy was founded in 1937 to support the U.S. commercial shipping industry and
enhance national security. Students graduate with a bachelor’s degree, an unlimited tonnage U.S. Coast Guard license and a
commission in the armed services.
The traditional focus has been preparing graduates for bluewater jobs on large commercial oceangoing vessels. But the maritime
industry is changing. As the inland river and offshore industries are growing rapidly, the academy is adapting its curriculum to
these brownwater sectors.
This year’s incoming class, the class of 2017, will be the first that will follow a new curriculum just approved by the Coast Guard
that encompasses new STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) requirements for mariners. A new set of
electives has also been added that will explore “Coastal and Inland Vessel Operations,” with courses in tug, towing and small
vessel operations, brownwater piloting and navigation, and coastal and inland vessel management.
“Our graduates are prepared to work across the industry,” Rear Adm. James A. Helis, USMMA superintendent, said in an
interview. “We are seeing sustained growth in offshore and inland, and we must go in that direction.”
More inland companies are coming to campus to recruit, and more students are showing a sincere interest in joining that industry,
according to Dr. Shashi Kumar, academic dean. He said 59 of the 202 graduates in 2013 listed their job choice as brownwater —
the highest number ever.
“It’s a different kettle of fish today,” said Kumar, a master mariner and former dean at Maine Maritime Academy. “There are
students coming to us now who grew up along the Mississippi River or other coastal or inland states and have knowledge of the
industry and want to work in it.”
They are also exposed to the industry through career seminars, family associations, the Internet and internships, he said.
Kumar said the academy is trying to secure funding for a new tug simulator.
Also on the school’s wish list is a dynamic positioning system simulator. DP systems are now standard on most offshore vessels.
The academy’s new training ship, a NASA vessel that is currently being upgraded at a Florida shipyard, will have a DP system.

Dressed in their midshipmen's finest, members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Marching Band took part in the Cow Harbor
Day Parade Sunday in Northport.
The band usually numbers about 100, but half were out to sea, according to the director. No matter. Their dress blue tops, lockstep performance and choice of music were real crowd pleasers as they paraded down Main Street.
Their show-stopper: The theme from the TV series "Hogan's Heroes," the aptly titled "March."

What is Cow Harbor Day?
Cow Harbor Day is the traditional annual festival celebrating the history of the Village of Northport on Long Island in NY. The
name comes from "The Great Cow Harbor" this is what the Village was called years ago as the cows use to graze on the fields
along the Harbor which are now two lovely parks.

27. Maritime Administration supports U.S. Defense efforts
FAST LANE: The Official Blog of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation – September 24, 2013
http://www.dot.gov/fastlane/maritime-administration-supports-us-defense-efforts
Posted by Todd Solomon
Ensuring that producers and suppliers can ship freight effectively from coast to coast and to markets around the world is a key
part of the DOT mission. But when American forces are deployed abroad, the cargo supporting their efforts becomes particularly
important, and our Maritime Administration (MARAD) works hard to sustain our troops with the food, equipment, and personnel
they need to do their jobs and return home safely.
Yesterday at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Acting Maritime Administrator Paul "Chip" Jaenichen reminded
students that "logistics matter." The business of moving, supplying, and maintaining our joint forces is critical to their success.
Logistics determine whether we can deploy a force at all; they determine where and when we can do so; and they determine the
tempo and reach with which our forces can fight.
Acting Administrator Jaenichen also made it clear to students that, when it comes to logistics, MARAD has their backs.
MARAD works with the U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) and the Military Sealift Command (MSC) to ensure that our
nation has sufficient ships and merchant mariners to meet its strategic deployment and sustainment requirements. Our programs
ensure that both government and privately owned vessels are available to TRANSCOM and MSC when needed.
Without the U.S. commercial maritime industry and the programs administered by MARAD, American forces would have a much
more difficult time accomplishing their missions.
Through the Ready Reserve Force of MARAD-owned ships, the U.S. flagged private ships of the Voluntary Intermodal Shipping
Agreement (VISA), and the Maritime Security Program (MSP), the American maritime community makes its vessels and its
mariners available for national service whenever our joint forces need logistics support.
For example, these efforts resulted in effective and seamless sealift delivery during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring
Freedom. MSP vessels have been a key contributor to our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, moving more than 50 percent of all
military cargo. And since 2009 alone, MSP ships have carried more than 90 percent of the cargo needed to support U.S. military
operations and rebuilding efforts in both countries.
The U.S. is the only nation capable of deploying major forces anywhere in the world at a moment's notice in support of our
national security objectives. Part of that capability comes from our ability to sustain those forces.
Ref: USMMA KPA-CPA News 100713

Our Maritime Administration is proud of its strong record of ensuring that logistical support in the past, and MARAD stands ready
to deliver when and if that support is needed in the future.

It happened 70 years ago Monday.
With World War II in full swing and the Battle of the Atlantic raging, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's campus at Kings Point
was dedicated Sept. 30, 1943.
After recognizing the need to standardize training aboard vessels, Congress passed the landmark Merchant Marine Act in 1936.
Two years later, the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps was established.
But the campus gave the corps a permanent home on the Long Island Sound. Then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt said at the
time: “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy.”
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo paid tribute to the Academy as it turns 70. “Today we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United States
Merchant Marine Academy and recognize the invaluable contributions of the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps,” Cuomo said.
“Members of the Merchant Marines have served New York and the United States both in foreign military conflicts and domestic
emergency situations, and we are grateful for their service.”
USMMA graduates have participated in every conflict since World War II.

After years of neglect, Kings Point is finally beefing up its facilities
As midshipmen arrived at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., this summer to begin a new academic year,
they were greeted with more than buzz cuts and pushups.
The newly renovated Rogers Hall dorm was reopened after a major structural overhaul. Delano dining hall has a new kitchen and
caterer. A replacement for Mallory Pier is under construction. And the training vessel Kings Pointer, a former NASA ship, is being
renovated at a yard in Florida and is expected to dock on campus this fall.
After years of operating with crumbling facilities under numerous superintendents, Kings Point appears to be righting its listing
ship.

“Kings Point is still one of the priorities we have within this administration,” Paul “Chip” Jaenichen, acting administrator at the U.S.
Maritime Administration, told a recent gathering of USMMA graduates in Baltimore. “It is one of our crown jewels of our five
service academies, and we are trying to get it back to that position.”
Marad, the Transportation Department agency that oversees the academy, has invested heavily in capital improvements to Kings
Point, which sits on stunning waterfront property on Long Island that once included the estate of Walter Chrysler. “We have a lot of
work going on,” Jaenichen said. “It is pretty exciting.”
For those close to Kings Point — including students, faculty, alumni, and the commercial maritime industry — these changes
have been long overdue. Things were so bad five years ago that a Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel tasked by DOT to assess the
school called the situation “dire” and concluded that the academy had reached a “tipping point.”
REPUTATION IN JEOPARDY
Facilities — many that dated to the school’s founding more than 60 years ago — had deteriorated to the point of having electrical
and plumbing failures. The gym, built in 1943, needed modern ventilation, lighting and floors. Last year, a carbon monoxide leak in
one of the dorms sent 39 cadets to the hospital. The waterfront piers “were in an abysmal state.” Cost of improvements was put at
$300 million.
The panel warned in its 2010 report that unless buildings, athletic facilities, and training equipment were upgraded and internal
financial practices reformed, the academy could lose its reputation as a world-class maritime training institution as well as its
school accreditation.
A year earlier, in 2009, the General Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, released a highly critical report on the
school’s finances. It found numerous irregularities, including overcharging midshipmen $8.1 million in school fees, and made 47
recommendations for improvements.
During this period, the academy had three superintendents who were reassigned after staying no more than a year on campus.
This left the school without strong, consistent leadership and it hurt morale. Several other administrators and support staff were
also let go, in what Mary Jane Fuschetto, outgoing head of the USMMA National Parent Association, called “an academic
massacre.”
“Every single person who knew how to run the place was fired,” she said.
The turmoil focused an unflattering light on the academy and its mission, with those inside and outside the marine industry
wondering if the academy was still relevant.
Also of significance were changes occurring in the maritime industry. With bluewater shipping now dominated by foreign-flag ships
and new opportunities being found in the brownwater and offshore energy sectors, the traditional curriculum seemed outmoded
and in need of a reality check.
Ref: USMMA KPA-CPA News 100713
Congress started to take note as complaints began to pour in from alumni and parents. Former DOT Secretary Ray LaHood
visited the campus and was “aghast” at what he saw. Money started to flow to the academy to upgrade its sagging infrastructure
and reforms were made in the school’s organizational structure and finances.
Curriculum changes are also underway, including recent Coast Guard approval of a revised curriculum that incorporates the new
STCW requirements for Coast Guard licensing.
New courses are also in the works for midshipmen to learn about shipping on the inland and coastal waterways and operation of
offshore service vessels.
STRATEGIC PLAN
USMMA’s superintendent, Rear Adm. James A. Helis, a retired Army colonel with 30 years of military service and a teaching stint
at the U.S. Army War College, has promised to stay the course of reform.
Soon after taking over in June 2012, Helis released a strategic plan that will guide the academy through 2017, outlining
improvements in financial accounting, infrastructure, campus culture, leadership and relations between the academy and the
maritime industry.
Helis said in an interview that progress has been made in the past year toward meeting these goals. This includes a new chief
financial officer and a new advisory board, building and infrastructure renovations, and the approval of a new curriculum. Relations
with Marad have also improved.
“It’s all very positive,” Helis said. “We are continuing to invest in infrastructure, and we have enough money in the 2014 budget to
cover continued improvements in the coming year. This shows the continued support from Congress and the administration for the
academy.”
He said morale on campus “is better than it was a year ago,” and this has been helped along by the new construction that is a
visible sign of investment in the school.
Asked how he responded to questions about the school’s relevancy, he said: “The school is still relevant today and will remain
relevant in the future. Our graduates are in high demand, and we see 100 percent employment after graduation, so there is still a
need for licensed mariners.”
There are still some rough spots, observers say, and hard feelings persist between the school’s alumni, Marad and academy
administration.
Several decisions by the school administration, under the direction of Marad/DOT, have puzzled parents and alumni, who actively
support the school with donations and student mentoring and closely follow school developments from football to finances.
Alumni feel that they are being marginalized, “herded for the past seven years rather than consulted on major decisions affecting
the academy,” Charles Hill, chairman of the USMMA Alumni Association Foundation, wrote in the May issue of the Kings Pointer
alumni magazine. He said that “a number of decisions and actions have been taken that have damaged the academy,” and he
questioned the rationale of continued alumni donations to the school.
Among the issues is the constant reassignment of superintendents, and shuttering of the Global Maritime and Transportation
School. Also upsetting was the eviction of the Alumni Association and Foundation from its on-campus office because
administrators said the space was needed for classrooms during renovations.
Helis said that alumni are valued for their networking and financial support on behalf of midshipmen, but he dismissed the
complaints, saying “there are strains in every relationship. We will continue to work with alumni.”
In the end, people say what matters most is the quality of education that students receive in preparation for jobs in commercial
shipping and defense.
“I can’t say that academics have suffered,” said Fuschetto of the parent association. Two of her daughters graduated from the
academy and work in commercial shipping.
“I still think it’s a premier school and the problems are internal to the administration and to Marad,” said Fuschetto, who has
published a book about the academy and often travels to Washington from her home in Colorado to promote the school to
Congress.
“There’s a saying that Kings Point is not always the place you want to be, but is always the place you want to be from. The
midshipmen still feel that way. No one has complained about the quality of the education there.”

Maritime Administration
The Maritime Administration (http://www.marad.dot.gov/) promotes the development and maintenance of an adequate, wellbalanced United States merchant marine, sufficient to carry the Nation's domestic waterborne commerce and a substantial portion
of its waterborne foreign commerce, and capable of service as a naval and military auxiliary in time of war or national emergency.
The Maritime Administration also seeks to ensure that the United States maintains adequate shipbuilding and repair services,
efficient ports, effective intermodal water and land transportation systems, and reserve shipping capacity for use in time of national
emergency.
36. Maritime Industry Charges Into the Future
FAST LANE: The Official Blog of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation – September 26, 2013
http://www.dot.gov/fastlane/maritime-industry-charges-future
Posted by Paul "Chip" Jaenichen
The economic recovery continues to offer new opportunities for the U.S. maritime industry and the U.S.-flag fleet, and I am excited
that our nation’s international shipping community has capitalized on these opportunities and is poised to expand even further.
Recently, at the inaugural Tradewinds Jones Act Forum, I discussed the changes affecting the coastwise U.S.-flag maritime
industry -- also known as the Jones Act fleet.
Since its enactment, the Jones Act continues to ensure a level playing field for U.S. vessels moving cargo within the nation. The
Act keeps skilled American mariners employed aboard American ships by requiring that products moved between U.S. ports be
carried by U.S. vessels manned by U.S. crews. More recently, the Jones Act has been a catalyst for growth in the maritime
industry and also our economy.
Supply boats, large tankers, and barge vessels are in high demand to support the production and movement of shale oil, a new,
more abundant cargo source, between American coastwise ports. Currently 12 new product tankers are on order from American
shipyards, with options to build more. In addition, more than 100 offshore vessels are on order at Gulf Coast shipyards, with the
number of deep water rigs available in the Gulf of Mexico expected to increase by 25 percent by 2015.
That’s why this Administration has invested more than $150 million to boost U.S. shipyards that support production upgrades to
increase capacity and competitiveness as well as shipyard efficiency.
Ref: USMMA KPA-CPA News 100713
It’s a wise investment. Since 2008, U.S. oil and natural gas production has increased overall and net imports of foreign oil and
petroleum fell to their lowest level in nearly 20 years. We are now less reliant on oil imports than any time since 1993 with the U.S.
on track to become the world’s largest oil producer by 2020.
And of course, increased production at our shipyards means middle-class jobs for Americans who not only build, but also operate
these vessels. Additionally, the shipbuilding industry contributes more than $36 billion to our national economy.
The Obama Administration remains committed to our shipping industry and to the policies that sustain domestic trade. This
productive industry has helped grow America’s economy.

40. USMMA Cadets Corps Dedication ceremony planned in Pass Christian, MS. October 12, 2013
On Saturday, Oct 12th, 2013 we have a special Dedication ceremony planned in Pass Christian, MS. In 1979 our chapter, with the
assistance of the USN Seabees from Gulfport, MS. erected a memorial to the USMMA Cadets Corps which was located in Pass
Christian, MS. at Henderson Point. As you well know, this was one of the two facilities used as KP before the government bought
the Chrysler Estate. Many who passed through those gates were part of the 142 and the memorial is dedicated to those who died
as cadets from Pass Christian and Sam Mateo. In 1950 the campus was finally shut down and sold to the Mississippi Baptist
Convention Board. Numerous hurricanes and finally Katrina destroyed all remnants of the buildings. However, because the
Seabees installed the Memorial which consisted of an old ketch sailing anchor (donated by the Seabees) and plaque, they
remained in place.
USMM Cadet Corps Basic School Memorial, located in Pass Christian, MS. at Henderson Point. Original Dedication Plaque & Anchor, and Visitor Center which
was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The Mississippi Baptist Convention Board (MBCB) removed these items for safe keeping. Fast forward to July of this year and
our chapter was notified that a couple in Bay St Louis, MS was working with the MBCB to try and restore the memorial. Mr. John
Ohman and his wife Katharine, who have no relationship with KP, reached out to us for help. John is a retired C/Eng with Lykes
and ABS. He knew and sailed with many KP grads and his dedication to the project should be commended.
Original Anchor
Original Dedication Plaque
We met with John, the MBCB and have submitted plans to the MDOT to recreate this memorial and it was approved The MBCB
handed me the original bronze plaque and we immediately sent it to be refurbished by the father-in-law of
Kevin Stith '96 who is a professional in this field. The anchor is located in West, MS, a four hour drive from the coast and is being
retrieved for restoration as well. The USN Seabees have agreed to help us again in setting and mounting this memorial. So at
1000 hours on Oct 12, 2013 we will rededicate the USMMA Pass Christian cadet Corps Memorial to the men who lost their lives at
sea s cadets in WWII. The Admiral and Acting Maritime Administrator will be on hand along with six midshipmen traveling thanks
to the great gift of the class of 1962. Reception to follow. The Memorial will be in Henderson Point Park which is 0.6 miles NNE of
the original campus. Henderson Point is still demolished from Katrina and we wanted the memorial to be in a location where
people will actually see it.

THESE GROUNDS, FROM SEPTEMBER 16, 1942
TO MARCH 21, 1950, WERE THE SITE OF THE PASS CHRISTIAN
UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE CADET CORPS BASIC SCHOOL.
FROM HERE AND THE SISTER SCHOOL AT SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA,
OVER 6000 UNDERGRADUATES OF THE U.S. MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY AT KINGS POINT,
NEW YORK, WENT TO SEA IN WAR AND PEACE.
TO THOSE CADETS, WHO IN THE COURSE OF THEIR TRAINING OR SUBSEQUENT SERVICE,
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR OUR COUNTRY, THIS MONUMENT IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED.
================================================
Our chapter has no greater mission than this project. Many need to be thanked and will be. This is our history and legacy and we
shall never forget the sacrifices made by these young men in time of war. Think about it, how many would volunteer to go to KP
knowing when they set sail a U-Boat could and would sink them. Yet, many not only were sunk and survived; they went back
again and were sunk again. Their story, bravery and dedication must never be allowed to fade. These brave men set the course
and bar for the rest of us. We are extremely proud to restore and dedicate what this chapter created in 1979.

History and Photos of Merchant Marine Cadet Corps Life in the 1940's
Attribution: American Merchant Marine at War, www.usmm.org
The Merchant Marine Act of 1936 directed that the merchant marine be "manned with a trained and efficient citizen personnel,"
but did not specify any structure for the Maritime Commission to follow. The Bland amendment of June 1938, created the United
States Maritime Service for "training of licensed and unlicensed merchant marine personnel." The Maritime Commission's first
report to Congress in January 1939 recommended establishment of a federal cadet system, and pointed out the need for officers

with gunnery skills in case of war. In July 1942 control over the Cadet Corps was transferred from the Coast Guard to the War
Shipping Administration.
Richard McNulty, who for years had preached the need for a formal training organization, became the first Supervisor of Cadet
Training, a position he held for 12 years. McNulty and a staff of four worked out a curriculum and in September 1939 appointed 3
"Port Inspector-Instructors" in New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans for 325 cadets.
The Maritime Commission made selection to the Cadet program based on a National Competitive Examination, the first held on
April 17, 1939. Of the 450 applicants, 166 passed the exam. Cadets were assigned to ships, whose Masters were responsible for
supervising their work. Ashore, Port Inspector-Instructors supervised the training program which included an exam at the end of
each sea year.
The need for a permanent shore facility became obvious quickly. After several years of temporary facilities, Congress
appropriated funds in 1942 for the purchase of the former Chrysler estate for an Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, New York.
At the same time the Merchant Marine Cadet Schools were established at Pass Christian, Mississippi, and San Mateo, California.
Gulf Coast Cadet Corps
The Gulf Coast Cadet Corps found its first home in June 1940 at the Coast Guard Air Station in Biloxi, Mississippi. By winter they
moved to the commandant's old house at the Algiers Navy Yard. Evicted again, the District Cadet Training Instructor bought the
North Star, a 120-foot houseboat, and leased land along Bayou St. John. Old Civilian Conservation Corps buildings were
reassembled on the site.
During a cruise, the North Star took shelter from a storm at the Inn-by-the-Sea resort in Pass Christian. An officer learned the
hotel owners were willing to sell to the government and the deal was approved on August 29, 1942. The North Star was used to
move the cadets to their new home in mid-September 1942. The training vessels at Pass Christian were: North Star (renamed
Robert Waterman), Oneida, Alfred Haag (renamed John Land), Samuel Samuels (renamed Joshua Humphreys) and a submarine
chaser renamed Ensign Strom.
The cadets at San Mateo were transferred to Kings Point in September 1947, and the school closed, becoming a junior college,
and later, a nature preserve. Pass Christian Cadet School, already suffering severe financial problems, was devastated by a
hurricane in September 1947. The School closed in 1950, the facilities turned into a religious college, then a resort.

On a very personal note, I retired from the federal government in June 2011 after 31years of service. I served 29 of those years
with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). In early 2001 NAVSEA moved from Arlington, VA to the Washington Navy
Yard. My NAVSEA home from 2001 until May 2010 was Bldg 197, 4th floor, North end of the building. As you all are aware, this
past Monday, September 16, was a tragic day for my NAVSEA family and for our Nation. The shooter went to that location in the
building and shot and killed two of my friends, Vishnu Pandit and Kathy Gaarde, whom I had worked with for many years, as well
as an acquaintance of mine, Sylvia Frasier. Yesterday I attended the memorial service honoring the life of Vishnu Pandit. I would
appreciate it if you would keep all the families of the victims in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those who experienced the
horror of it all. Many of my friends will have deep emotional scars for the rest of their lives because of this tragedy. Thank you.

44. USMMA Class of 2017 Team Participates
in NYC Twelfth Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K
The Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk was held on Sunday September 29, 2013. It was created to honor heroic life and death of
Stephen Siller, his 342 FDNY brothers and all 9/11 victims. By joining the T2T Run/Walk, participants honored those who
sacrificed in the line of duty. Our USMMA Class of 2017 Participants followed in the footsteps of an American hero, showing
support for our first responders & military! The NYC T2T Run/Walk is approximately 3.5 miles.
The USMMA Class of 2017 included 85 runners. Dillon Yi ’14 served as the Team Leader. The Plebes were ably joined in this
effort by Don Mathiesen ’62!
The USMMA Class of 2017 was ranked among the Top Ten Teams for their fundraising efforts to support the Tunnel To Towers
Foundation.
The sole purpose of our Foundation is to honor the legacy of love given to us by Stephen Siller, FDNY, who laid down his life on
9/11, by "doing good" in his name. The mission is to follow Stephen's footsteps through support of children who have lost a
parent, firefighters, and military who have been seriously injured and sacrifice their quality of life in the line of duty.
Vision
We believe that the Foundation is a real and concrete way to Follow the Footsteps of an American hero. The Foundation has
established LET US DO GOOD PROGRAMS as our way to make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of others. These
programs, In the Line of Duty and In the Name of Love, bring hope to grieving children, and healing to firefighters and families of
our military, who sacrifice life and limb in the line of duty.
In the Line of Duty programs pay tribute to the 343 FDNY fallen brothers who sacrificed their lives on 9/11 through the memorial
Tunnel To Towers Run, which supports the Weill-Cornell Burn Center and Burn Centers across America, and restores shattered
lives by building homes for surviving quadriplegic servicemen returning from combat.
In the Name of Love programs bring love and hope to the most broken and vulnerable children. The Foundation does this through
scholarship awards for local children who have lost a parent; through the establishment and continued support of Stephen's
House of the New York Foundling for orphaned, abused and neglected children; and for scholarships to children of the men and
women who sacrificed their lives in the Afghan and Iraqi wars.
Core Values
The guiding principle that shapes our Foundation is that we can transcend the tragedy of 9/11 through the grace that comes from
the power of caring. Love and faith are the cornerstone of our Foundation. The core belief of our Foundation is that every time we
change a life for the better, we change the future. One mother, father, brother, sister, daughter and son at a time ... we can make t
