SYNOPSIS
After the terror unleashed on Lake Victoria in PIRANHA 3D, the pre-historic school of
bloodthirsty piranhas are back. This time, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink
their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park.
Christopher Lloyd (BACK TO THE FUTURE) reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert
with survivor Paul Scheer (THE LEAGUE) and a partially devoured Ving Rhames (PULP
FICTION) back for more fish frenzy. David Hasselhoff trades in the sandy beaches of
“Baywatch” to be a celebrity lifeguard at the racy water park. Prepare for double the terror,
double the action and double the fun in this sequel also starring Gary Busey (LETHAL
WEAPON), Katrina Bowden (30 ROCK), Danielle Panabaker (THE CRAZIES), Matt Bush
(ADVENTURELAND), Chris Zylka (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and David Koechner
(ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY).
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
How do you follow up an insanely fun comic horror epic like PIRANHA 3D - with its ferocious
flesheaters, the sexy, scantily-clad young victims, and the bizarre twists and turns? For
Dimension Films, the answer was clear: double-down on the blood, the body count and the
beautiful young things. Double-down on the twisted humor, demented plot developments and
wild entertainment. Last but not least, ramp up the 3D experience by filming in native 3D with
the latest technology.
In short, double the D’s to make PIRANHA 3DD.
To create the film, Dimension turned to four filmmakers with a history of collaboration and a flair
for blending bone-chilling scares with truly twisted humor: director John Gulager, who got his
directing start at Dimension with FEAST; the writing team of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick
Melton, who concocted infernal thrills as the writers of four SAW titles; and Joel Soisson, who
has produced, directed and written several films for Dimension. Remarks Matt Stein, who
initiated PIRANHA 3DD as a Dimension executive and served as an executive producer, “These
guys share a sensibility that was exactly right for PIRANHA 3DD. They can twist genre
conventions but also give audiences what they want. And they never cross the line into spoof.”
Gulager embraced the idea of a sequel that boldly announced its more-is-more intentions to
create a fun, amusing ride for the audience. “The immediate appeal was that title – it was so
goofy cool,” he smiles.
“It instantly suggested a modern version of the drive-in
horror/exploitation movies that I love from the 1970s. Those movies reveled in outrageous fun,
carnage, sexy girls, gratuitous nudity and sick, sick humor. I wanted to give the audience that
same excitement.”
As with any sequel, PIRANHA 3DD had to pick up the baton from its predecessor while staking
out its own territory. PIRANHA 3D was set at an Arizona lake town during Spring Break but
where would the prehistoric omnivores venture next? The team began brainstorming. Recalls
Melton, “We wanted to push the concept and think of the worst place that a piranha outbreak
could happen. And it occurred to us: how about a crowded water park? You’ve got the kiddie
pond, you’ve got the water slides, the lazy river… lots of fun different places for piranha
mayhem.”
They crafted a storyline about a family-owned water park that’s about to open for the summer
season in Cross Lake, Arizona. Mapping the piranhas’ journey from freshwater lake to manmade water park opened up juicy character possibilities, not the least of which was the water
park owner. As Dunstan puts it, “When I think about having a water park that resorts to draining
lake water instead of going through the city, it just calls for a nice, well-rounded sleazeball. He’s
asking for trouble and the prehistoric flesh-chompers are there to give him exactly that.”
Like PIRANHA 3D, PIRANHA 3DD incorporates classic elements of teen horror movies from the
70s and 80s: hot girls and guys focused on summer fun; a pretty, smart female protagonist who
is the first to suspect trouble and tries to avert disaster; and copious carnage. The film also
weaves in a love story, as the film’s heroine is wooed by her handsome ex-boyfriend, oblivious
to the fact that her nerdy male best friend is hopelessly in love with her.
With the framework in place, the writers were free to let their imagination run wild – very, very
wild. Says Soisson,“There were two goals. One, of course, was to create a compelling
storyline with characters that you identify with and are rooting for. The other objective, which is
very much a PIRANHA franchise calling card, is that you get as outrageous as you possibly can.
And then go beyond that. Take it up to 11.”
EVERYONE INTO THE WATER!
PIRANHA 3DD continues the series’ casting tradition, unfolding along two tracks. “For
character parts and cameo roles, we wanted the kind of iconic actors that the audience ‘gets’ in
a moment,” says producer/writer Soisson. “For the rest of the cast – the kids who are the main
focus – we wanted good, solid actors, who were also easy on the eye, of course. But we really
sought out people that weren’t over-the-top. They could just as easily be leads in any of the
newest teen TV shows or movies that are pure drama. And we really got lucky on both fronts.”
One of the reliable pleasures of a sequel is the return of particular characters from the original
film. Here, too, PIRANHA 3DD tweaks convention to deliver a surprise or two with its alumni
group.
The first actor to return to sign on for the sequel was Christopher Lloyd, the BACK TO THE
FUTURE icon who plays the role of the eccentric piranha expert Mr. Goodman. Lloyd’s
character was one of the few to have no direct contact with the marauding fish hordes, making it
relatively simple to bring Mr. Goodman back for another round of expert advice.
Reprising other characters was more of a creative leap, given the high body count of PIRANHA
3D. But where there’s a will, there’s a way. Writer/producer Soisson describes a phone call he
received one night from Dimension Films Chairman and founder Bob Weinstein. “Bob had
come home to a voicemail from Ving Rhames. All the message said was, ‘Bob, this is Ving
“Piranha 3DD” Rhames. And guess what? I didn’t die.’ I said, ‘Oh. So Ving didn’t die? Okay, I
can work with that. We can go there.’” With Rhames onboard, the filmmakers came up with the
idea to team him up with Paul Scheer, who played hapless porn cameraman Andrew “Drew”
Cunningham in PIRANHA 3D.
PIRANHA 3DD’s supporting and cameo roles drew an eclectic, eccentric group. David
Koechner (ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY) put his distinctive stamp on
Maddy’s stepfather, Chet, who doubles and triples every possible entendre when he unveils the
Big Wet water park. In an early sequence that sets the tone for what is to follow, Gary Busey
plays a grizzled farmer searching a lake for the corpse of a prize cow. Joining Busey for his illfated foray is Gulager’s father, Clu, who cameos in all of his son’s films and is himself a
venerable horror figure from films such as RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.
Besides Lloyd’s character, one other role was written with a specific actor in mind: David
Hasselhoff. The screenwriters placed the “Baywatch” legend at the Big Wet water park on
opening day, not knowing if he would actually be amenable to playing himself as an egotistical
visiting celebrity in a movie called PIRANHA 3DD.
They were in luck. Not only was Haselhoff willing to send up his image, he was a fan of the first
film. Confirms Hasselhoff, “I sat down with Piranha 3D, expecting to watch just a little bit -- and I
watched the whole thing. I thought it was great: 90 minutes of pure escapism and laughs. And I
could tell from the screenplay that this would be a terrific ride.”
The movie’s youthful contingent is headed up by Danielle Panabaker (THE CRAZIES) as
Maddy, the level-headed graduate student whose visions of a happy summer working at the
family water park are quickly dashed. “Maddy is thrust into this crazy situation, and she feels
responsible for the safety of the people around her,” says Gulager. “Danielle’s a very strong
actress, and she has a mother hen quality that was perfect for Maddy.”
Matt Bush (ADVENTURELAND) plays Barry, Maddy’s trusted friend, fellow water park worker
and perennially overlooked love interest; Chris Zylka (“Flash Thompson” in the upcoming THE
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) plays Kyle, Maddy’s handsome, smooth-taking ex-boyfriend. Katrina
Bowden (“30 Rock”) and Meagan Tandy (“Jane by Design”) portray Maddy’s best girlfriends, the
virginal Shelby and the not-so-virginal Ashley, respectively. Rounding out the cast is Adrian
Martinez as the obnoxious park employee Big Dave, who meets his match in a very tenacious
piranha.
HOME SCHOOLING
The filmmakers pulled out all the stops when it came to the stars of the show, the piranhas.
Aiming to give audiences killers they could really sink their teeth into, they created their own
school of piranha. Make-up effects designer Gary Tunnicliffe designed and built over 150 of the
toothy terrors, in five different sizes: creepily translucent embryo piranhas; “fry” piranhas that
were about 3 inches long and well-suited to hanging out in bodily orifices; infant piranhas, 12
inches of insatiable appetite; aggressive, unstoppable 2-foot teens; and finally a few adults,
which topped out at an intimidating 4 feet. He amplified the fish’s prehistoric qualities and gave
them a lot more razor fins on their bodies, the better to slice with.
Says Soisson, “People are coming to the movie to see the piranha, and we thought it would be
more realistic-looking and more fun if our actors were interacting with actual prosthetic
mechanical fish. With CGI, it takes a lot of work to make it look like actors are physically
interacting with an effect. We liked that we could slam these piranhas into people, and you can
actually see them being attacked.”
For complex swimming and swarming sequences, digital piranhas got their day in the sun. But
one of the most challenging digital sequences had nothing to do with piranha, but rather with the
legless Deputy Fallon played by Ving Rhames. Visual effects supervisor Roger Prudden had to
work with multiple layers of green screen, digitally removing Rhames’s real legs and replacing
them with Deputy Fallon’s very special, custom-made artificial limbs. Visual details that were
blocked by Rhames in the actual shot – clothing, boots – had to be reintroduced digitally.
Finally, everything in the sequence had to be matched up with the Rhames/Fallon’s staggering
walk.
Filming underwater in native 3D posed a unique set of challenges. Diving bells had to be built
to house bells for the two sizable 3D cameras; armor padding and soundproofing added to the
logistical load. The cinematography team encompassed a traditional team lead by director of
photography Alexandre Lehmann, and several 3D technicians.
Each shot required
stereographer Max Penner to calibrate the optimum amount of space between the two camera
lenses. “This was my first 3D movie and it was a really interesting, sometimes funny, learning
experience,” says Gulager. “With the big cameras and huge set-up, it felt like we were back in
the early days of film. And Max was behind a curtain, like the wizard in the WIZARD OF OZ.
His job is incredibly delicate, because if the placement of the cameras isn’t right, as a viewer
you’re going to go cross-eyed and your head will feel like it’s literally about to explode. Which
would be a nice effect for the movie, but not something you want to do to a live audience.”
PIRANHA 3DD shot for 30 days in Wilmington, North Carolina in the spring of 2011, with the
mom-and-pop Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park standing in for Big Wet. Though the schedule
was short, Gulager, the writers and the cast found plenty of room for improvisation and
embellishment. Hasselhoff notes he was originally scheduled for a handful of scenes and a
single day’s work; he ended up staying four days, becoming one of the film’s key characters in
addition to co-writing two songs and performing over the closing credits. “John and the writers
were completely open to improvisation and allowing us to do what we do as actors. Everyone in
the cast was very creative and funny, and everyone plays it straight,” he notes. His lifeguard
perch gave him an impeccable view of the scene. “There were so many girls that were in such
good shape it looked like ‘Baywatch’ on steroids. It was like living in a 3D moment every time
you would go to the pool. And it was even more fun watching everyone in the pool get eaten by
the fish.”
Panabaker praises Gulager for expertly orchestrating the madness and mayhem. “I think John
Gulager was born to make these kinds of movies. He has the perfect sensibility, and a very
specific vision of how he wants everything to look,” she remarks.
Writers Melton and Dunstan had been unable to visit the set in North Carolina, but they were
able to get a glimpse of production when some extra scenes were shot in a California water
park. Recalls Dunstan, “The last thing that Pat and I saw before we left was a bloody topless
woman running out and catching a human head in her cleavage. And I thought, ‘Okay, we’re
fine. We’ve made the movie we wanted to make.’”
Hasselhoff agrees. “The movie is a fun ride. Lots of blood, lots of laughs, nothing is sacred.
You’re going to go into the theater and watch the craziest, funniest, goriest horror movie ever.
PIRANHA 3DD makes JAWS look like kindergarten.”

DAVID HASSELHOFF
David Hasselhoff is listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as “the most watched TV
star in the world” thanks to starring roles in both “Knight Rider” and “Baywatch.”
Born in Baltimore, MD, and after his theatrical debut at age seven in “Peter Pan,” David’s
childhood dream was to have a career on Broadway. Having appeared in the Frank Wildhorn’s
hit Broadway musical “Jekyll and Hyde,” everything came full circle when he made his debut as
Captain Hoff the Hook in the UK pantomime production of “Peter Pan” at the legendary
Wimbledon Theatre, breaking all box-office records in its 100-year anniversary. He has
continued to play Captain Hoff the Hook for the past 3 years, which has become an annual
Christmas tradition in the U.K. At the personal request of good friend and producer, Simon
Cowell, David filled in for Cowell in the judge’s chair in UK’s hit TV show, “Britain’s Got Talent.”
Also, he recently completed a highly successful one night only concert playing to an SRO
audience in the UK.
David’s first professional job came on the CBS soap opera, “The Young and the Restless,”
playing Dr. Snapper Foster. Six years and 850 shows later, he was lured to prime-time TV by
NBC President, Brandon Tartikoff, to star in the now-legendary “Knight Rider” as Michael
Knight, leading him to a People’s Choice Award for Most Popular Actor. Twenty-four years later,
the show is still playing throughout the world. In 1989, he headed the cast of “Baywatch” and,
after being cancelled by NBC, it was then acquired by Hasselhoff and the producing partners for
first-run syndication at which time he became one of the executive producers and TV history
was made. “Baywatch” ran for 11 years and is still viewed in 140 countries by over one billion
viewers every week making Hasselhoff the most watched TV star on the planet. Along the way,
Hasselhoff appeared in feature films such as Adam Sandler’s CLICK; THE SPONGEBOB
SQUAREPANTS MOVIE, DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY, LAYOVER, LEGACY,
and Universal’s HOP.
His remarkable musical career took off in the late 1980s when he recorded the album, Looking
for Freedom for BMG Germany at the end of the Cold War. The song became an anthem for
East and West Germany and remained at the top of their charts for eight weeks. The album
went triple platinum in Europe and Hasselhoff was named “most popular and best-selling artist
of the year.” He has since garnered over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide. In 1989, he
sang “Looking for Freedom” from atop the Berlin Wall to over one million people during the New
Year’s Eve German reunification celebration. This past year, he was asked to perform the song
again atop the wall to ring in the 2011 New Year.
His latest pop single, “Jump in My Car,” which he performed on the #1 NBC summer show,
“America’s Got Talent,” where he also served as a judge for four years, hit the top of the UK
charts. The “Jump in My Car” video, as well as his viral video hit, “Hooked on a Feeling” were
downloaded over 16 million times and he became one of the most downloaded artists of the
decade. His concerts continue to play to standing-room-only audiences worldwide.
In 2000, Hasselhoff made his long-awaited Broadway debut in the hit musical, “Jekyll and
Hyde,” which was filmed by Broadway Television Network for HBO Signature. It is now available
on DVD from Image Entertainment.
He went on to make his West End debut as Billy Flynn in the long-running musical, “Chicago,”
and starred in the Las Vegas production of Mel Brooks’ hit musical, “The Producers.” His
portrayal of the flamboyant Roger DeBris and the ‘singing Hitler’ proved to be an audience
knockout.
His autobiography, Making Waves, was published by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and made
the best-seller list. A US-release, titled Don’t Hassel the Hoff, was published by St Martin’s
Press. Due to its success, Making Waves was re-issued in the German-translated edition, Die
Autobiographie, and reached #8 on the German-Austrian non-fiction charts.
Iconic status came for Hasselhoff when he was recently honoured by the Comedy Central
channel with “The Comedy Central Roast of David Hasselhoff.” The Hoff-Roast premiered as
one of the top rated comedy specials on the network and was number one in male
demographics for all cable and network shows that night. It was a trending phenomenon on
Twitter with over two million tweets, domestic and worldwide. His recent appearance on ABC’s
#1 prime-time show, “Dancing With the Stars” garnered an impressive 36% increase in ratings
from the previous year.
Hasselhoff, who founded Race for Life, a charity granting wishes for terminal and chronically ill
children, is also a frequent visitor to children’s hospitals around the world. He currently is a
member of Wheels for Humanity, personally delivering wheelchairs to disabled children and
adults across the world. “If you’re blessed, I believe it is your moral obligation to give that
blessing to someone else,” Hasselhoff says. David was recently honoured with the International
Star of the Year Award for Outstanding Contribution to Global Entertainment by the Bollywood
Awards, the ‘Oscars’ of India. In addition, he was awarded the Comeback Star of the Year
Award on the “VH1 Big in ’06 Awards.”
He resides in southern California with his two daughters, Taylor-Ann and Hayley; his six dogs, a
cockatoo named Peaches and two bearded dragons, Ikki and Nikki.
JEAN-LUC BILODEAU
Proving himself among his peers with natural charisma and comic adeptness, Jean-Luc
Bilodeau has become an emerging young talent. This summer, you can catch Jean-Luc as the
fun loving, cool, and good-looking, Ben Whelan on the highly anticipated ABC Family comedy,
“Baby Daddy.” A young 20-something bachelor, Ben is living the life and enjoying all that the
city has to offer until one day his world is turned upside down, when he discovers a baby girl left
at his front door by an ex-girlfriend claiming he is the father. Ben inevitably decides to raise the
baby with the help of his friends and family. The series is written by writer/producer, Daniel
Berendsen best known for the blockbuster theatrical film release, HANNAH MONTANA: THE
MOVIE and television series “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” and ABC Family’s “The Nine Lives
of Chloe King.” “Baby Daddy” also stars Chelsea Kane (“One Tree Hill,” “Dancing With the
Stars”) and Tahj Mowry (SMART GUY). The show will premiere Wednesday June 20th, 2012 at
8:30pm ET/PT.
Before the summer heats up, Jean-Luc can be seen in the Mandate Pictures’ romantic comedy
LOL, playing Jeremy, the best friend to Miley Cyrus’ character, Lola. This is a coming-of-age
story about young romance and friendship set in a world connected by YouTube and Facebook.
The film co-stars Demi Moore, Thomas Jane, and Ashley Greene, and opened in theaters on
May 4th, 2012. You can also catch Jean-Luc in Dimension Films’ highly anticipated horror
sequel, PIRANHA 3DD in theaters on June 1st, 2012. The movie also stars Golden Globe
winner Ving Rhames and Katrina Bowden (“30 Rock”).
Jean-Luc is best known for his role on the long running ABC Family sci-fi drama series “Kyle
XY,” where he played Kyle’s smug but charmingly handsome bad boy brother, Josh Trager.
Most recently, he was featured in the recurring role of Bret Martin on ABC’s “No Ordinary
Family” starring Emmy winner Michael Chiklis, playing the love interest to Kay Panabaker’s
character. He also starred opposite Debby Ryan in the hit MOW for the Disney Channel “16
Wishes.” Jean-Luc’s film credits include Warner Brothers Pictures’ TRICK R TREAT produced
by Bryan Singer (X-MEN, THE USUAL SUSPECTS).
Born and raised in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada (a quaint town just outside Vancouver)
Jean-Luc and his family knew at an early age that he was destined for show business. He can
remember making his family laugh to tears at the dinner table and bringing comic relief to his
downtrodden classmates at school. After one serendipitous audition, Jean-Luc was hooked and
a serious acting career was in the making.
When not pursuing the rigors of acting, he can be found enjoying yoga, playing hockey and
hitting the slopes for snowboarding in the winter.
Jean-Luc currently resides in Los Angeles.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS
JOHN GULAGER (Director)
It is 1969 and 12 year old John Gulager is perched on the hood of his father’s Cadillac, gliding
down Universal Studio’s New York Street, shooting super 8 footage, always keeping an eye out
for the studio security. Since John was 5 years old he was smuggled into the studios under
blankets on the back floor of his parents’ car. He became adept at eluding the authorities on the
back lots of studios as his father and mother worked in movies and television series.
John is the son of Clu Gulager (THE KILLERS, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, THE VIRGINIAN,
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD) and Miriam Byrd Nethery (“Barney Miller,” “Mr. T and Tina,”
“The Sandy Duncan Show,” LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III). He has
been immersed in the filmic arts since birth.
John's first acting job was in the largest musical comedy theatre in America located in Maggie
Valley, North Carolina where he played Little Jake in “Annie Get Your Gun.” He toured with his
father and mother to fairs, amusement parks and rodeos, doing karate "bad guy" acts and finally
graduating to comedy speaking skits with his father on personal appearances around America.
At nine years of age, John acted the lead in a Universal Studios short subject film, A DAY WITH
THE BOYS. This lovely 18 minute small film opened the 1970 Cannes Film Festival as an
example of "state-of-the-art" filmmaking and was released on the GEORGE WASHINGTON
DVD by The Criterion Collection for being an inspiration to director David Gordon Green.
John's directing and cinematography debut was bootlegged on weekends and weekday
evenings in Universal's backlot when he was 11 years old. The super 8 film had a successful
one night run at his elementary school Science Fair.
John graduated to 16mm with enrollment at the Southern California Film Institute where John
studied with Don Ham. He then enrolled at the Chounard Art Institute (the original Cal Arts) in
downtown L.A.
John continued his studies in filmmaking at the original Sherwood Oaks Experimental College of
Film. There, he studied with world-class cinematographers: Laszlo Kovacs, William A. Fraker,
Vilmos Zsigmond and John A. Alonzo. This was the first time John held the “new” 35mm
Panaflex camera. During this time, John completed two short subject 16mm films in Howard
Lester’s class and shot his father’s acting class in video. John also studied acting, but not with
his father. He studied at the famous Loft Studio with Peggy Feury and Bill Traylor. His
classmate was Sean Penn.
In Los Angeles, he studied guitar flatpicking with Herb Peterson (Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles,
etc.), electric guitar with Tom Wheeler (author and editor of Guitar Player Magazine) and
classical guitar with George Economedes.
John was asked to compose the score and star in a rock opera motion picture, JOHN AND
NORMA NOVAK. He completed the entire score for the film. Only enough money was secured
to film 30 minutes of the production. Although the 30 minutes was beautiful, both visually and
musically, the 35mm-scope movie was not finished because of inadequate financing.
After the rock movie, John took an esoteric electronic band he had formed, STREAM BY
STANDERS, to New York City where they played world famous venues such as the Mudd Club.
He stayed there in the East Village and continued to shoot film for the band's performances and
videotape fashion shows.
He composed scores for several medical films while in NYC.
Eventually, John teamed with his father and actor brother, Tom, to produce a film. John and his
partners moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where they partially completed FUCKING TULSA. John
was the cinematographer, the sound and film editor and was in charge of all postproduction
including the score. John taught a filmmaking class for the film's crew. It included all the filmic
arts necessary to complete the filming portion of the motion picture. LA WEEKLY said, “Fucking
Tulsa's 20-minute promo, which was shot, scored and edited by John Gulager… are small
masterpieces of craft. John skillfully set the script's atonal mayhem to an impressive visual
melody: The scenes are a dreamweave of telephoto-angle shots of Tulsa's people and urban
terrain, countered by brooding "nature" in the form of sun-dappled trees and disconsolate
twilights.” Recently, the American Cinematheque in Hollywood, showed FUCKING TULSA,
JOHN AND NORMA NOVAK and A DAY WITH THE BOYS as part of their Hollywood Outlaws
series.
John works with the Coppola and Stallone families, shooting and editing Sage Stallone’s
directing debut, VIC, a 30 minute, 35mm short starring Clu Gulager, Carol Lynley, Gary Frank,
Richard Herd and John Phillip Law.
A few years later John entered an internet contest, Project Greenlight, created by Matt Damon
and Ben Affleck. He won, along with screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. As his
prize, he directs FEAST with Balthazar Getty and Henry Rollins. It played at the first Fantastic
Fest and he won Best Director. His season of “Project Greenlight” is shown in universities and
film schools across the country (sometimes as a cautionary tale).
John can also be seen in the Christian Slater starring film, HE WAS A QUIET MAN, doing
double duty as Maurice the psychologist and the goldfish that urges Slater to kill his co-workers.
John subsequently made two DVD sequels to FEAST, FEAST II: SLOPPY SECONDS and
FEAST III: THE HAPPY FINISH.
Now, PIRANHA 3DD is poised to strike on June 1st.
MARK CANTON (Producer)
Mark Canton has been a preeminent force in the entertainment industry helping to bring more
than 300 pictures to the screen in his capacity as a senior studio executive and producer.
Canton controls a large number of high profile projects in various stages of development, preproduction, production and post- production.
Canton’s latest film, IMMORTALS, an epic mythological tale set in war torn ancient Greece, was
released on 11/11/11 and has since amassed a worldwide gross in excess of $230 million.
Currently in production is THE TOMB, an action thriller written by Miles Chapman and directed
by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom for Summit Entertainment and starring Sylvester
Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is filming on location in Louisiana in spring 2012. In preproduction is 300: THE BATTLE OF ARTEMESIUM, the companion to the mega-hit, 300, which
will begin filming in July 2012. It is written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad and will be
directed by Noam Murro for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. based on Frank Miller’s latest
graphic novel.
In advanced development are EMPEROR for Exclusive Media Group. It is based on the first of
Conn Iggulden’s internationally acclaimed, best-selling Emperor novels, The Gates of Rome,
which tells the story of a young Julius Caesar and Marcus Brutus. Adapted by AcademyAward® winner Bill Broyles and Stephen Harrigan, it will be directed by Burr Steers, with Nigel
Sinclair, Guy East and Broyles also producing; ELEVEN MINUTES from Paulo Cohello’s sexy,
best-selling novel about a young woman’s odyssey from Brazil to Geneva to become a highclass call girl; TUNNELS, to be directed by Vincenzo Natali for Relativity Media, which is
expected to be the next sensation to replace the HARRY POTTER franchise; SPANKING
SHAKESPEARE, a hilarious high school comedy about a kid with a funny name who has two
things on his mind: getting into college and getting laid; and PLAY DEAD, a fresh and riveting
supernatural thriller about football player zombies bent on revenge in a football-obsessed Texas
town. PLAY DEAD is being written by novelist and screenwriter Joe Schreiber based on Ryan
Brown’s debut novel with Lucky VIII Films and Davids Canton Productions also producing.
Being readied for release by Magnolia is RITES OF PASSAGE, a high-adrenaline thriller with a
darkly comic tone that examines the lives and relationships of stressed-out, Ritalin-fueled, hardpartying Southern California college students. Christian Slater, Stephen Dorff, Wes Bentley and
Kate Maberly head the ensemble cast of the independently produced and financed theatrical
feature that marks the directorial debut of Peter Iliff. Currently in post-production is COLD
LIGHT OF DAY, an espionage thriller starring Henry Cavill (IMMORTALS, SUPERMAN), Bruce
Willis and Sigourney Weaver, which will be released by Summit in Sept 2012.
Also active in the television arena, Canton has two projects that are being readied for
production: “Vanguard” written by Christian Gudegast for FX, in the tone of “Sons of Anarchy,”
but in the world of Navy Seals, as well as an Untitled Courtney Kemp Project, which is being
developed along with rapper 50 Cent.
Amongst his notable films are the mega-hit 300 and THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES. 300,
based on the Frank Miller graphic novel and directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros Pictures,
opened to record-setting box office numbers, having grossed more than $460 million worldwide
and is the highest-grossing March release in the history of the motion picture business. The
300 DVD has set sales records around the world. THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, based on
the best selling children books by Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black with Mark Waters (MEAN
GIRLS) directing, was released in February 2008 by Paramount Pictures and was the highestgrossing family film of early 2008. He had two movies released in 2010: Dimension Films’
PIRANHA 3D directed by Alexandre Aja, which Canton describes as “Jaws for a new
generation.” Its sequel, PIRANHA 3DD, will be released later this year, also by Dimension.
Canton also produced LETTERS TO JULIET, a romantic drama for Summit Entertainment,
which was directed by the late Gary Winick on location in Verona and Tuscany, Italy, and New
York City.
After holding posts as President of Worldwide Theatrical Production at Warner Bros. where he
was instrumental in creating the notable BATMAN, LETHAL WEAPON and NATIONAL
LAMPOON’S VACATION film franchises and Chairman of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture
Companies, where he greenlit numerous highly popular, widely acclaimed award-winning films
including AS GOOD AS IT GETS, JERRY MAGUIRE and MEN IN BLACK, Canton returned to
Warner Bros. to create his own production entity, The Canton Company. In early 2002 he
joined Artists Production Group as a partner, Chairman and CEO and in December 2003, he
launched Atmosphere Entertainment MM – an entrepreneurial venture that develops, produces
and finances theatrical motion pictures and television programming. Canton is currently a
member of the board of Platinum Studios, the company responsible for the highly popular MEN
IN BLACK FRANCHISE.
A native of New York, Canton is a UCLA graduate (magna cum laude) and a member of UCLA’s
National Honor Society for American Studies. He delivered the 2011 commencement address at
UCLA’s School of History. In addition to serving on the UCLA Board of Councilors and the
Deans Advisory Board for the School of Theatre, Film, and Television, Canton was Vice
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute and Founder and is Chairman
Emeritus of AFI’s Third Decade Council.
JOEL SOISSON (Producer)
After attending New York’s Pratt Institute (fine art/animation), The University of Southern
California (film studies) and The American Film Institute (cinematography), Joel Soisson found
initial work in Hollywood as a screenwriter and storyboard artist. He went on to pen almost two
dozen features, including Dimension Films’ DRACULA 2000 starring Gerard Butler and its two
sequels. Soisson’s early success in the horror genre led to many similar projects as a writer,
producer and director for such companies as Screen Gems, First Look Pictures and The
Weinstein Company, along with frequent ghostwriting assignments.
Soisson has directed sequels of several horror/sci-fi franchises, including THE PROPHECY,
PULSE, and Stephen King’s CHILDREN OF THE CORN.
In 1995, Soisson was one of several filmmakers profiled in the Bravo TV reality series “Project
Greenlight” which documented the making of the horror-comedy FEAST from screenplay to
theatrical release.
Soisson’s producing credits include the seminal teen comedy BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT
ADVENTURE with Keanu Reeves, cult thriller THE PROPHECY with Christopher Walken, the
upcoming PIRANHA 3DD, animated comedy TOONSTONE and family drama WHITE FROG,
starring Joan Chen and B.D. Wong.
Soisson is founder and president of NEO ART & LOGIC, a production and development
company in business since 1990. Neo has been involved in over fifty feature films and is proud
to have collaborated with some of the most prominent and talented artists working today.
Soisson formed NEO DIGITAL IMAGING in 1997 to service the industry’s growing appetite for
computer-generated effects. The company has gone on to produce award-winning visual
effects for more than three dozen feature films.
