Responsible for all operations and leadership of the AEJMC nationally-accredited School of Journalism and
Mass Communication, with 2100 majors on the graduate and undergraduate level, 82 percent of whom are
minorities.
During tenure, facilitated nearly $2 million in grants, scholarships, planned giving and other fundraising.
Successfully led the effort for reaccreditation in 2008 in which the SJMC achieved full compliance on all
standards both on the undergraduate and graduate levels; the latter resulted in our being only one of four
such graduate programs accredited nationally at that time.
Developed the Professional Leadership Council for the SJMC which has in its membership the leadership in
the news, public relations, broadcast and advertising industries in South Florida and in several industries
nationally.
Worked to develop the Hearst Distinguished Lecture Series into a premier event with leaders of the
communications industries nationally as speakers available to the community as well.
Responsible for long-term community engagement with public schools as founder and chair, South Florida
Journalism Day, held at FIU in conjunction with the Florida Scholastic Press Association, 38th year in 2010.
Each year more than 500 middle and high school students and their journalism teachers/advisers spend a
day on campus learning about journalism to better produce student media on their campuses.

Founding Associate Dean, Associate Director and Associate Chair, SJMC. Responsible for day-to-day
operations of the school in the areas of budget, facilities, equipment, faculty and curriculum. Responsible for
coordination of the Public Relations Sequence (1983-86), as well as for all academic advisement, internship,
recruitment and placement activities for the department/school; coordination of course scheduling and overall
curricular planning; service on master's degree planning committee; chair, Graduate Committee; consultant
to FIU's student newspaper in start-up, business, editorial and equipment matters; continuing liaison to
professional organizations/groups in community, state and nation (hold national leadership positions in

Director of accreditation for SJMC, 1989-91, 1996-97 and 2001-02; SJMC was found in compliance with all
standards of the accrediting agency in all of the site visits, including the initial accreditation in 1991 and in
the following two reaccrediting visits in 1997 and 2002.
Responsible for setting up the granting of a $250,000 endowment from the Hearst Foundation which funds
the annual Hearst Distinguished Lecture Series.

Responsible for all departmental functions including budget, curriculum revision and administration, as well
as working with media on a local, state and national level in building internships and scholarships and
beginning organization of a departmental Advisory Council. Major job was getting the department established
and hiring faculty, as well as curriculum development.
Served on the Steering Group of the College of Technology, 1981-83; group was the policy advisory
committee for the dean.
Florida International University: Director of Information Services and News Bureau, and Director of Special Events,
1978-81.
Responsible for the total news operation for two campuses and for defining and developing both internal and
external public relations for the institution; also responsible for special events on all levels as key arm for the
President's Office in areas relating to media visibility and community development; daily contact with South
Florida and national media.
Florida International University: Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, 1977-78.
Responsible for supervision of Career Development and Placement,
Student Activities and Student Government, Cooperative Education, Health Services, Counseling, Student
Grievances and Student Publications.
Florida International University: Director of Student Activities, 1973-77.
Created this position and set up FIU’s Student Activities Office and all student programming; responsible for
Activity and Service Fee Funds; responsible for working with 65 registered student organizations;
Acted as adviser to the Student Government Association, and working with them was responsible for all
programming and master scheduling of all student events.
Initiated all student publications, including an independent student newspaper, handbook, magazine and
yearbook. Served as adviser to the FIU student newspaper, 1973-79, the FIU student yearbook, 1975-83,
and the FIU student magazine, 1977-78.
Planning committee for University House (the student center) at University Park Campus, 1973-74; Planning
