History
Hillsborough Street was first constructed in 1792 as part of the Capitol’s original layout.
It is one of the four original streets designated to radiate outward in the cardinal directions from
Capitol Square, each leading to one of the former State Capital Cities
Hillsborough Street is currently the only thoroughfare with an uninterrupted path to the Capitol.
Built on the strong partnership between NC State University, the City of Raleigh, the residential
communities and local businesses, Hillsborough Street has become a new destination in Raleigh.
