2012
Dear friends,
Sherlock Holmes’ attitude to sport was rather ambivalent. The world of sport was “a
sweeter and healthier one. My ramifications stretch out into many sections of society, but
never, I am happy to say, into amateur sport, which is the best and soundest thing in
England.” A harsher judgement, from the same story, was made by the eminent
Cambridge academic, Dr Leslie Armstrong: “I have no sympathy with these childish
games,” and later in the tale Holmes concurs with the scientist, “personally I am in
agreement with Dr Armstrong.”
I have no great interest in organised games, I tend to share the sentiments of Robert
Falcon Scott whose letter to his wife was discovered beside his frozen body following his
walk to the South Pole a hundred years ago. He writes of his young son destined to
become the great Sir Peter Scott. “Make the boy interested in natural history if you can.
It is better than games. They encourage it in some schools.”
All that notwithstanding the Olympic Games seem to have gone well, with a good
atmosphere, plenty of medals for the home team, and some positive inspiration for our
young people. Long may that continue.
For myself, I’ll keep to natural history. A few weeks ago I had a quiet day on
Lindisfarne, there was a high spring-tide and I sat at Emmanuel Head sea-watching. I
counted 1500 gannets, four species of tern, stacks of Eider in “eclipse” plumage and loads
of waders. Back at home the most alarming sighting of the month was of a young and
beautiful fox. I was in our barn playing some music when I saw the creature stroll
through the yard, eye our ducks which luckily had been put away for the evening, then
slowly sniff around our back door seemingly oblivious of my presence. “Excuse me,” I
said, and off it scarpered. I hope that if it does come back it takes the drake, not the duck.
I heard a sad and true story: I’ve been visiting some of our dairy farmers to hear firsthand of the current situation. One of them told me what is happening in the Shetland
Islands where he has been doing some work. For many years the five dairy farms on
those islands have been supplying milk to the islanders. The greedy supermarkets spotted
an opening. The Co-op and Tesco are now shipping milk from Aberdeen to Shetland and
undercutting the local farmers. Soon there will be no dairy farms there. How long are we
going to put up with this simply to pay a little less for our weekly shopping? The cats are
getting fatter, the bullies bolder and if we do nothing our lives will be increasingly
controlled by the shameless capitalists sitting in offices glued to computer screens.
On a much happier note this month we have our confirmation service when Bishop
John will confirm seven of our young people. As I have got to know them quite well I
have confidence that the world will be in safe hands in their generation. Please remember
them in your prayers.
From your friend and priest,
Philip
