Autonomic Nervous System - Dr. Daniel Kapusta (MEB Rm. #5231; 568-3940)
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lecture the student should be able to:
1.
List the names of the neurotransmitters of the autonomic and somatic nervous system;
describe which sites these compounds are released from in the periphery and which organs
they act.
2.
Describe the physiological functions of the autonomic nervous system and the somatic
nervous system.
3.
Describe anatomical similarities and differences between the sympathetic and
parasympathetic nervous system.
4.
Describe the physiological responses produced by activation of the sympathetic and
parasympathetic nervous system.
5.
Define cholinergic versus adrenergic nerves and receptors (including receptor subtypes).
6.
Describe the effects of acetylcholine on major organ systems and define the receptor(s)
(including subtype) which mediates each response.
7.
Describe the effects of norepinephrine (and epinephrine) on major organ systems and define
which receptor(s) (including subtype) mediates each response.
8.
Define the key steps in neurotransmission.
9.
Define dual innervation and predominant tone; Describe which major organ systems does
the sympathetic versus parasympathetic nervous system provide predominant tone.
10.
List the major physiological effects produced by muscarinic receptor blockade.
11.
List the major physiological effects produced by adrenergic receptor blockade.
