Evaluation Mid-Term Exams (three) Final Exam Written Work (compositions, written assignments, quizzes) Oral Work (oral exams, speaking lab, attendance, participation in class) Daily Preparation (online activities: Supersite and Blackboard) 40 % 15 % 15 % 15 % 15 % Blackboard. There is a Blackboard for this course. Check it often for announcements and other course materials. We have posted “Important Information for Students” – Information related to Honor Code, Plagiarism, Accessibility, and Harassment – on Blackboard. Cultural activities. You are required to participate in THREE cultural activities this semester. Only official University, Department, and French Club activities qualify as a cultural activity unless you make arrangements with your instructor. Report your participation with a short paragraph in French describing the activity and summarizing what you learned about French culture. Do not take this report to the Writing Lab. You may email your report to your instructor. Mid-Term Exams (40%) All mid-term exams are in the Testing Center. Each exam assesses your achievement on the grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions focused on by two Rêvez “Leçons.” The exams are comprehensive in that we expect you to retain and build upon the structures and vocabulary you acquired in preceding Leçons. We expect you to continuously make progress toward the proficiency outcomes listed above. Before each exam (including the final exam), you will receive a review sheet that will show you how the exam is organized and that will give you some practice questions to help you evaluate yourself and focus your preparations. For each mid-term exam you will take a listening comprehension test in class whose results will be included with the results of the mid-term. Final Exam (15%) You will take the final exam in your regular French 201 classroom at the time and date scheduled by the university. See the last page of the Class Schedule (Emploi du temps) to see the time BYU has scheduled for your final exam. Written Work (15%) Writing is fundamental to communicating in French in real-life situations. We are asking you to write two compositions during the semester and several short writing assignments. Composition due dates are shown on a separate document to be distributed by your instructor. You must take your composition to the Writing Lab (3140 JFSB) and then incorporate feedback from the Writing-Lab Assistant into your final version. Turn in BOTH the final version and the draft taken to the Writing Lab. Your grade will be based on BOTH the draft and the final version; therefore, it is important to do your best on BOTH versions. The writing lab only helps French 201 students with compositions. The lab will not help you with other French 201 writing assignments. Each Thursday morning the writing lab sign-up is posted online. The document containing due dates will also give you instructions for making lab appointments. You may sign up for 15-minute appointments for the following week. Plan ahead; appointment times fill up quickly. Keep your appointment! Writing-Lab Assistants work only on typed drafts and will review only one draft of each composition. Ensure that Lab Assistants write their name at the top of your draft. Quizzes. Your instructor may give quizzes from time to time on assigned homework – this includes vocabulary, grammar structures, readings, and film clips. Fiches de grammaires. These exercises review basic grammar principles. Most of the exercises are on Blackboard, but your instructor may ask you to do other exercises as well. You may do each exercise on Blackboard twice. Oral Work (15%) The underlying objective of French 201 is to improve your ability to communicate orally. You will take three oral exams during the semester. The grade for each oral exam will be based on a recording you will make in the HLRC Testing Lab in B153 JFSB. (You will have at least two days to take each Oral Exam.) You will receive a review sheet before each oral exam, and you will be allowed to take the first oral exam twice. Oral Exam dates are shown on the Composition and Lab schedule document your instructor will give you. You may schedule times for oral exams using the computers inside the HLRC Testing Lab. Do not be late for the time you reserve! You will receive a grade – equal to one graded oral exam – for your oral participation in class and your use of the Speaking Lab. The Speaking Lab Assistants will help you practice pronunciation and prepare for oral exams. The speaking lab rooms are in 3009 JKB. You can make an appointment with a Speaking Lab Assistant online, just like you do for the writing lab. You are required to use the speaking lab at least once before each Oral Exam plus three additional times during the semester. Attendance and participation. It is essential that you attend class! Improving speaking and listening skills is the focus of most every class. Through in-class activities you will practice the language functions that increase proficiency. Attendance and participation are formal components of your grade. Daily Preparation – online activities (15%) All students are required to complete online activities shown on the Emploi du temps (class schedule). Register for the Rêvez Supersite and online Student Activity Manual (SAM) immediately using the two codes that come with your new textbook or that you may purchase on line at VHLdirect.com. Due dates. All Supersite activities (except SAM) are due before your class begins on the due date shown on the Supersite and on the Class Schedule. You may complete online activities late; however, there is a 10% penalty for every day an activity is late. Review. Most SAM exercises are meant for review; nevertheless, they are mandatory and should be completed before the review class for the corresponding mid-term exam. We recommend that you do the SAM exercises as you go along and not wait until the last minute. Suggested completion dates are shown on the Class Schedule. Class Wiki I have made a wiki site for our class which you will need to check often for announcements. You will also use this site for discussions on the films and other topics as specified. Everyone is required to participate in the discussion forums and is encouraged to contribute to other items (videoclips, websites, etc.) on the wiki. The wiki address is: byufrench201.wikispaces.com. Class Policies Because one of the main goals of French 201 is to participate in a variety of conversations, I expect you to speak French during the entire class period. I also expect you to be courteous during class and put cellphones away. Contact Info E-mail: donnaleeandrus@gmail.com Office: 3002 JKB (WF: 9-10, TTH: 1-2)
