WILLIAM E. AND ERNEST L. BOYER COMMON DAY OF LEARNING – 2014 Application for Presentation: Information and Instructions The Common Day of Learning Tuesday, March 4, 2014 9:00 am – 3:50 pm Azusa Pacific University is an institution built on four cornerstones: Christ, Scholarship, Community, and Service. Our commitment to scholarship has been signaled for 21 years by hosting a campus-wide conference dedicated to the celebration of academic discovery. On the first Tuesday of March, regular daytime activities will be suspended to give faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to share their recent findings with members of the campus and surrounding communities. Scholarly seminars are scheduled before and after the morning chapel keynote address, and will feature individual, group, discussion, and poster sessions. The theme for CDL 2014 is found in the University Passage for this academic year: “Speak the Truth in Love: Knowledge in the Framework of Compassion (Eph. 4:15).” It encourages participants to explore the connection between what we know and why we pursue knowledge, by evoking love as the context for our search for truth. As the university’s schools and departments have different histories and approaches to this endeavor, much can be gained as we learn from each other’s grasp of the interaction of knowledge and compassion. Who May Participate? Applications to present at CDL are strongly encouraged from all members of the campus community. While some may choose to share findings from formal research projects or recent publications, representative scholarship of all kinds is welcomed. Presentations from disciplines that demonstrate learning through art, music, theater, and movement are certainly encouraged. Presentations are scheduled in sessions that are 75 and 50 minutes long. They can be organized in a variety of ways; however, participants generally submit requests based upon one of the following presentation styles: Individual Presentations: Presentations may vary in length, and individual presenters may be grouped with two or three others around a common topic or theme. At least 15 minutes are reserved for audience questions and discussion. Individuals are welcome to share in poster and performance formats. Group Presentations: Typically 60 minutes long, with 15 minutes reserved for audience questions and participation. Participants requesting a group presentation should identify all presenters on the attached request form; requests for an all-student panel should also identify a faculty moderator that can coordinate presentations and field audience questions. Roundtable Discussions: One form of group presentations, typically 75 minutes long, with audience participation incorporated throughout the session. Roundtable discussions featuring student presenters should include a faculty moderator that can help guide discussions. Participants requesting a group discussion session should also identify all participants on the attached request form. Submission Deadline: Completed presentation requests should be submitted by Friday, November 22, 2013. Selectivity: Since more applications are expected than slots to accommodate them, preference will be given to presentations that explore the CDL theme, that focus on scholarship, and/or that incorporate interactive elements of audience engagement.
