Latin III AA 3rd Quarter Culture Project
Topic: the Life, Times, & Legacy of Julius Caesar
Due Date: Monday, March 5, 2012
Requirements: Choose from among the projects below; no more than 4 people per topic
in each class. At the end of the project, each student must turn in his/ her notes and a
typed bibliography done in the correct format. Notes are worth 20 points , bibliography
is also worth 20 points. The rubrics used for grading the notes & bibliography can be
found on my web page. The project itself is worth 80 points. Each of these 3 elements
will count as a test grade. You are to use pp.232-235 of text & pp. 127 -131 of Latin
Workbook as part of the 6 sources required. No Late Projects will be accepted !!!
1. You are a gossip columnist: Your topic is “Caesar’s Women”. Discuss each of
Caesar’s wives & Cleopatra. What were the approximate time frames of each
relationship & how did each relationship end? Did Caesar have any children?
2. Diary entry: You are a teen-ager in Rome on the day of Caesar’s assassination on
March 15, 44 B.C. Discuss the reactions, reports, & information/details
surrounding the murder of one of Rome’s most well known figures.
3. Do an episode of This is Your Life: Julius Caesar.
4. You are a veteran soldier in Caesar’s army, it is your job to train young recruits.
What information will you give regarding uniforms, equipment, battle weapons &
strategies? Cf. pp. 236 – 239 text.
5. The First Triumvirate: What is it? When was it? Who were the 3 men involved ?
Why was it created? What caused its collapse? What accomplishments, if any
resulted from this alliance?
6. Cursus Honorum: You wish to pursue a political career in ancient Republican
Rome. What steps must you take in order to reach the topic political office,i.e.
consul ? Explain the order & functions of each political office.
7. Caesar’s enemies: Who were they & why were they his enemies? Sulla,
Ariovistus, Vercingetorix,Pompey, Mithridates , Ptolemy XIII, King Juba. Gaius
Junius Brutus,etc. Choose 4 or 5. Give detailed information on each enemy & the
reasons for the enmity.
8. Caesar’s accomplishments; explain the significance of the accomplishments you
discuss.
9. Late breaking news: You must do news story on a major historical event in
Caesar’s life, e.g. kidnapping by pirates, election as consul for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or
4th time, defeat of the Gaul, crossing of the Rubicon, defeat of Pompey at
Pharsalus in Thessaly, his assassination. Give full details surrounding the event
you choose people, places, & events that led to this event in Caesar’s life. Also
discuss the outcome of the event you choose.
10. Life in the military: Rome 1B.C. – 1A.D. Compare & contrast the military
clothing, weapons, equipment, & strategies of ancient Rome vs. those of 20th -21st
America.
11. Compare /contrast Caesar to Alexander the Great, Pericles, Cleopatra, Hannibal,
or Napoleon. Discuss the times in which each lived and the means used to
accomplish their goals. What impact did each figure have on history? Why/how
did each of these figures become so powerful? Give background regarding the
time in which each lived.
