Worksheet for # 3 (math embedded in CTE lesson) Problem #1: Let’s say your pt. Mr. Melvin Liquidator had a half pint of milk on his breakfast tray@ 8 am (0800 military time) and did not drink all of it. How would you determine the amount of fluid he drank in mls (the preferred fluid units used in health care)? 1. Using this graduate, how could you determine accurately the fluid intake for this liquid? Students might say you could estimate the amount taken in (fluid intake). You would stress that if the pt. is on strict intake & output (I & O), you would have to accurately measure the amounts taken in and put out. You would have a graduate for measuring and pour remaining half pint of milk in it to measure. Then subtract this amount from the original amount in the container. Be sure the amounts are in mls. You would actually use a milk carton (previously emptied, rinsed with hot water, and refilled with tap water). When you poured out the remaining liquid, have a student come up and tell you how much is in the graduate. The amount would be 60 mls or ccs (teachers would have to pour in ahead of time). 2. How many mls are there in a pint? 480 mls___ How many mls in a half pint? _240 mls__ 3. Using your own scrap paper, calculate the amount of fluid intake for this pt. for this liquid. ______________________________________________________________________ 4. What is the fluid intake for this pt. for this liquid?_______________________ Problem # 2: Your pt. Mr. Liquidator drank some of his 12 ounce can of soda with lunch at 1 pm (1300 military time). He is on strict I &O. 1. Tell me what would you do to determine fluid intake? _________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 2. How many mls are there in a 12 ounce can of soda?______________ 3. Using the measurement from the remainder in the soda can, how did you calculate fluid intake for the soda? 4. What is the fluid intake from this can of soda? ______________________ Problem # 3 Next, now that we’ve done fluid intake measurements, let’s do output. This is easier as there are no calculations to do, just measurement of the fluid the pt. puts out or excretes. Mr. Melvin Liquidator voided (urinated) at 2 pm (1400 military time). 1. Look at this graduate or urinal and tell me how much did he void? __________________ 2. What is his urinary output? _______________________
