Changes for the Midwest Directory are due
The Midwest District Directory is a valuable resource to the people serving within the Midwest
District. Each year a concerted effort is made to update the directory and include current and
accurate information, such as ministry web sites, email addresses, and cell phone numbers,
which have become standard information for many listings. Brothers and Partners should review
their current information and submit any additions, deletions or corrections. Don't forget to
include the number of copies of the 2009-2010 Midwest Directory that will be needed for your
ministry or residence. This project will be forwarded to the publisher around September 1st so a
timely response is necessary. Send corrected information to Cheryl Garrigan

Four Brothers made a Lasallian pilgrimage
In June Brothers Robert Veselsky, Joel McGraw, Kevin Fitzgerald, and Peter Hannon went
on a pilgrimage to the sites connected with the life of the founder of the Christian Brothers and
of the Lasallian schools. The group started in Rome at the Generalate where they attended mass
and renewed their vows in front of the relics of John Baptist de La Salle along with their
classmate, Brother Thomas Johnson. They stayed in a monastery, a retreat house, hotels and
communities of the Brothers across France. They visited a Carthusian monastery near Grenoble,
and in Parmenie they stayed at the Brothers’ retreat house in the French Alps where in 1717 De
La Salle had gone for prayer and renewal. The Brothers also visited Rheims, De La Salle’s
birthplace, where he began his work of organizing the schools and the Brothers to teach in them.
In addition, they went to Calais, Chartres, Paris and Rouen where the founder opened schools
and a novitiate and where he died and was first buried.
Ship packages for the Provincial community to Burr Ridge
If anyone will be shipping packages to a member of the Provincialate community by UPS or
FedEx, please send them to the Provincialate Office in Burr Ridge. This will facilitate the
delivery of the packages, since no one may be at the residence when packages are delivered.
Biography of Bishop McNamara planned
Mr. Bill Schweihs is working on a biography of Bishop McNamara, first bishop of Joliet. He
was wondering if any of the Christian Brothers knew him or any of his family members. Bill has
contacted the Joliet and Chicago dioceses but would like to search "everywhere" to find out more
about the bishop. If anyone has information to share, or knows of family he can contact, please
call him at home – (630) 953-2432.
Brother Patrick O’Brien cultural fund established
To commemorate Brother Patrick’s support of Ave Maria Home and other non-profit agencies in
Memphis, Ave Maria has established the Brother Patrick O’Brien Cultural Fund. Donations to
the fund will be used to provide a variety of art, musical and theatrical programs for their
residents and to take residents to cultural events. A supporter of Ave Maria for many years, he
served on the Board and the Development Committee where he shared his fundraising, public
relations, and marketing expertise for operations and for the Green House project. Donations
may be sent to Ave Maria Foundation, 2805 Charles Bryan Road, Bartlett, TN, 38134.

Lasallian Coaches clinic will be in September
The second Lasallian Coaches Clinic is scheduled for September 19-22, 2009 at Saint Mary's
University in Winona. Last year’s program was a great success and received exceptional reviews
from the forty-eight coaches who attended the clinic. This co-sponsored formation program,
between Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and the Christian Brothers of the Midwest District
Office of Formation, is designed to explore a Lasallian approach to coaching and is intended for
current coaches. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Leonard J. DiPaul, Director of Neumann
College of Pennsylvania's Center for Sport Spirituality and Character Development. Topics
include Mission-Centered Coaching, Spirituality and Sportsmanship, Leadership and Team
Dynamics, Strength and Conditioning, Injury Prevention and Care, NCAA Rules Regarding
Compliance and What High School Coaches Should Know, and a teambuilding--high ropes
challenge course. This information can be given to Athletic Directors and Head Coaches who
might send a team of coaches (both full-time faculty coaches and “off campus” coaches) from
any high school to this formation opportunity. The cost for the program is $350.00 for early
registration by August 15th and $400.00 for registration after that day. Contact: Tina Bonacci –
