In all cases the lease for the grave must be purchased, except for the placing of a vase or small tablet. All memorial stones must be inscribed with the grave number and cemetery section to which they refer, in accordance with the cemetery plan. Kerbstones or borderstones shall enclose a space not exceeding 2400 mm x 1050 mm (8’ x 3’6”), as specified in the regulations. Kerbstones on Lawn sections, full size graves only, must be in the same material as the memorial stones. Must enclose an area not to exceed the width of the memorial stone and 60 cm (24”) in front. Top of kerb not to exceed 10 cm (4”) above adjoining grass area. This area must be used for planting or covered with chippings. Freestanding vase or small tablet not to exceed 450 x 300 mm (18” x 12”). Memorial stones must not be constructed of artificial material. Headstones need not be of a uniformed design but a sketch plan of the proposed headstone must be submitted for the approval of Cemeteries office before erection. When taking instructions for work the mason must ensure that one of these forms is properly completed, giving the full names and signature of the owner of the grave or vault and returned to the Cemeteries office, along with the appropriate fee, before any work can be carried out on a grave. The grave owner must ensure that memorials are kept in good repair. The Council are not responsible for the maintenance of any grave in which the exclusive rights have been obtained. QUALIFIED MASONS ONLY ARE ALLOWED TO CARRY OUT WORKS WITHIN OUR CEMETERIES AND MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF A CURRENT PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE COVER OF £5,000,000.
