College Prep Writing

Tone

How is writing like music? In music song is made up of many elements including lyrics, tempo, and pitch. In writing, the tone is set by the interplay of word choice, sentence structure, and content. All of these work together to create a tone or a mood in a piece of writing.

Tone = the way that a writer or speaker uses distinctive word choice to indicate an attitude toward a subject.

How many tone words do you know? Brainstorm as many terms as you can before we proceed. Write these terms in your spiral notebook. Send a representative to write three on the board. Please don’t repeat terms already on the board.

As a group, choose one tone word to “act out” for the class by acting out a scene, or speaking a few lines in this tone.

Use these clues to add to your list of tone terminology. Briefly define each of these tone words. List words you know with similar meanings. Write these words and brief definitions in your spiral.
