Reference Meeting Thursday May 5th, 2011 Minutes In Attendance: K. Sullivan, J. Hack, S. Qian, L. Aldana, D. Alfgren, R. Moskal, E. Jeitner, D. Gallaher, G. Kostova, S. Simmons Brief items: Approval of previous meetings minutes and review of action items Discussion - Minutes from the previous meeting were approved without comment or need for amendment. Tech Issues Discussion - Is signing into two different Gmail accounts possible? If so, how do you do it? We could check the DoIT Google migration page to see if there is any information about this. - Major changes have happened in the wiki, so we’ll have to learn some tricks within the new wiki videlicet editing and such. Ease in editing the pages should be improved. We suspect that it should be back up by mid-June. Any edits made in the wiki between now and when it is back up will not be saved. Consequently, we should not make any edits in the wiki. Agenda items: Demonstration of new Bibliographic Instruction Request Form (J. Hack) Discussion -J. Hack added a second page to the Bibliographic Instruction request form which asks if the instructor would like additional Blackboard support. -The form, once submitted, will send an e-mail to the reference listserv, in addition to a confirmation email being sent to the requesting instructor. - Database description update: A ‘review comments’ field has been added so that librarians can list changes made to descriptions. Additionally descriptions are being kept to three lines long. J. Hack will send out an e-mail with more specific information about the review process. Handouts/Materials for Summer Orientation Discussion - Get a price from common vision for 2700 library brochures (printing cost and folding), then determine if L. Wilt will approve the expense of printing. - The PDF can be edited through Adobe Acrobat Pro to include information on the RLC. S. Simmons and G. Kostova will make updates to brochure. - If we are to provide materials for Summer Orientation, we will need the full printing run completed and in hand by June 3rd. Admissions guides training (part of orientation) Discussion - Admission Guides can be trained for their library portion of their tour. J. Gadsby will be spearheading this effort, and she is seeking additional input. The dates for training Admissions Guides will be on 6.10, 6.13 or 6.14. D. Alfgren and J. Gadsby will pick one of these dates for a 30-60 minute training session. D:\106760016.DOC CCBC collaboration (meeting in early June) Discussion - This collaboration would include information instruction sessions for CCBC staff regarding UMBC library resources. S. Qian has volunteered to participate in this endeavor with J. Gadsby. - As an aside, there is continued interest in doing a tour of CCBC’s renovated library. S. Simmons is still attempting to arrange this. Prezi for international students Discussion - G. Kostova created a presentation for international students using the Prezi software. This software was used in highlighting and framing the narrative structure of bibliographic instruction with international students for whom English is a secondary language. - Prezi is freeware, though there is a purchasable version which may be more robustly featured. G. Kostova will investigate the features of the purchasable version of Prezi, its cost, and what other libraries are doing with the software. R. Moskal Reporting Discussion LEC reporting: May 3rd minutes from LEC will be posted soon. - Library committees and working groups were reviewed. D. Alfgren assigned to everything. - J. Hack started a RLC newsfeed on RSS. We are encouraged to subscribe to the updates available here: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/rlc/news. - Hydration station will become part of the construction fund of the RLC. - Moving out of the future RLC space will start on the 5.21. Everything (furniture, etc.) needs to be out by the 5.26. Project Updates Discussion DG- Organizing student Party RM- out a few days next week LA - EBooks are being worked on by Tiffany SQ- Roving is ongoing. JH - working on wiki migration. Libraryh3lp has another product called Mycustomercloud which might be cheaper. SS - still working on PR. RLC Update Discussion - K. Sullivan met with DoIT, L. Wilt, and S. Jones. They will put in two cubicles near the suggestion board for DoIT Staff and a counter for the help desk itself around the future wall/door space into the RLC. - The question of how to proceed with our FAQ and information sharing insofar as cross training and the MOU are concerned is still up for discussion.
