4. “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (#94)
 Why is THIS poem referred to by in Frankenstein with
 Victor
 The monster (guilt), loss (mother, William, Justine), marriage, father, ego,
can’t tell
 Creature
 Life, lonely, humanity, guilt, looks
 Walton
 Stuck in ice, one dead already, crew is about to have a mutiny

Part Seven
 Mariner is saved by the Pilot’s Boat as his ship sinks
 Mariner asks Hermit to absolve him (571-574)
 Mariner is forced to tell his tell every so often, and the person to him he tells
his tale is known to him (585-587). In other words, the person to whom the
Mariner tells his tale is someone who needs the lesson.
 609-610: love all things that God made. Remember that this is the
Romantic Period, which includes gothic literature, in which there is both
the healing AND destructive power of nature.

In this sense Victor/Mariner vs. Walton/Wedding-Guest?
 Victor Frankenstein is the Ancient Mariner
 The Creature (Adam) is the albatross
 Robert Walton is the Wedding-Guest (remember that we’re not sure why the
Wedding-Guest is chosen and that it’s not like Victor sought out Walton)
