BIENNIAL SOUTHEASTERN COMPETITION

About the Competition
This biennial visual arts competition is hosted by the Art & Art History Department and
Admissions Office at Birmingham-Southern College. The purpose of this competition is the
recognition and promotion of talented rising artists in the Southeastern United States.
The winning artists will be listed in the Sunday 8th January publication of The News
(previously The Birmingham News). All winners and finalists will receive a certificate
suitable for framing.
Who’s Eligible?
The competition is open to all students attending the 9th through 12th grades in one of the
ten (10) Southeastern states whose teachers recognize exemplary visual artwork.
Entry Fee
None.
Entry Forms & CDs/DVDs
1) Artists submit entries only through their instructor’s/teacher’s adjudicated selection.
2) Instructors/Teachers are responsible for filling-out the attachments pertaining to this
competition so all material is consistent following entry specifications. The forms are:
a. Teacher Inventory Form (must accompany CD/DVD);
b. Student Information Form (must accompany CD/DVD); and
c. Artwork Competition Form (only if a student is accepted, comes with
artwork).
3) Teachers are limited to no more than ten (10) original pieces (no more than two [2]
per student) from exemplary artwork completed within the past two years.
4) CDs/DVDs will not be returned, so make duplicates prior to sending your entries.
5) Incomplete entry forms and information sheets, and improperly marked CDs/DVDs
will be disqualified.
COPIED FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
Specifications
1) Teachers are to create virus-free CDs/DVDs as follows:
a. JPG format – 144 dpi; no larger than 1200 X 1200
b. A maximum of one (1) digital image per two-dimensional work and a
maximum of two (2) digital images per three-dimensional work may be
submitted. TRANSPARENCIES OR 35 MM SLIDES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
NOTE: All images are projected on a large screen using an LCD
projector; please take this into consideration when selecting digital
images for submission.
c. Two-Dimensional images must state Height, Width, and Media.
d. Three-Dimensional images must state Height, Width, Depth, and Media.
e. Artists are encouraged to remove frames and matting for photography and
to mask out any extraneous background that might impact the jurors’ ability
to view the image.
f. Digital files must be identified by artist name and entry letter.
DO NOT USE ANY SPECIAL CHARACTERS or SYMBOLS WHEN NAMING THE
FILE. Example of wrong file name: joe-smith-A.jpg.
Example of correct file name: joe smith A.jpg.
Be sure to write school’s and instructor’s name on the
outside of the CD/DVD but leave the casing or cover blank.
g. Each image must be digitally labeled with:
i. the Student’s Name;
ii. an ‘A’ or ‘B’ if they have more than one piece of artwork;
iii. and School’s Name.

Printed copies of both the Teacher Inventory Form and Student Information Sheet
must accompany mailed or hand-delivered CDs/DVDs. Mailed CDs/DVDs are to
be postmarked no later than Thursday 10 November 2011 with hand-delivered
being due the same day no later than 4:30 p.m.
eMAILED IMAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Digital images are assumed to be accurate representations of actual work.
Jurors reserve the right to reject any accepted work not accurately represented
by digital image.
Artist Information & Notification for Accepted Works
All submitting artists will be notified by eMail of selection decisions.
No selection decisions of award winners will be released until the Awards
Presentation.
1) Accepted artwork must be accompanied by the Artwork Competition Form. This must
be filled out, completed-in-full, and firmly attached by the teacher (i.e. twodimensional work on the back; three-dimensional work on a flat surface).
2) Do not combine work from multiple teachers or classes in one package unless
designation of each teacher’s students can be easily verified when received.
3) A final Student Information Sheet should accompany the individual teachers’ students
work list only those packaged including their Social Security numbers for those who
may receive cash awards.
4) All work must be delivered in sturdy, reusable containers for receiving and shipping.
Shipped work must be accompanied by return prepaid shipping paperwork.
5) The installation direction must be indicated on the back of flat pieces.
6) DO NOT USE STYROFOAM PEANUTS, however; bubble-wrap and paper are acceptable.

Schools choosing to personally deliver artwork must do so by contacting the Art & Art
History Department during regular business days: Mondays through Fridays
exclusively during the hours of 8:15 a.m. until 12:00 Noon at 205.226.4928 or
800.523.5793 then ask for extension 4928.
Deadline for DELIVERY of all ACCEPTED work:
regardless of delivery choice is NOON on Monday 12 December 2011.

Exhibition & Awards
The Biennial Southeastern Competition awards presentation will be held in the Norton
Theater housed in the Norton Student Center on Sunday 8th January 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
Immediately following the awards ceremony, a formal opening and reception for the
accepted artists will be held in the Durbin Gallery housed in the Doris Wainwright Kennedy
Art Center and Azar Studios from 2:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. This reception will be catered
and refreshments will be served.
The Exhibition will close on Wednesday 25th January 2012 at 4:45 p.m.
Pick-Up & Return Shipping of Accepted Works
 All hand-delivered artwork must be picked up no later than Friday 27th January 2012.
 All shipped artwork will go out no later than Friday 27th January 2012.
 Street addresses are to be used for return shipping as U.P.S. will not deliver to Post
Office Boxes.
Publicity
Images of the exhibited artwork will be placed on the Birmingham-Southern College’s Art &
Art History website at: http://www.bsc.edu/academics/art/durbin.htm and will also be
publicized in The News (previously The Birmingham News).
REMEMBER
 Accepted work(s) will not be removed prior to the closing date of the exhibition.
 Work can be picked up and will be returned the first business week following the
close of the exhibition.
 Birmingham-Southern College and their agencies are not responsible for late, lost,
damaged, misdirected, destroyed, illegible, incomplete, or indiscernible entries.
