GOALS
This course aims to impart an understanding of elementary descriptive and inferential
statistics. The emphasis will be on applied problem solving and interpretation of results,
although computation will also be required.
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to calculate and explain basic
descriptive statistics; generate and interpret tables and graphs; make estimates of unknown
parameters and conduct hypothesis tests; and construct and interpret a simple linear
regression model. Successful completion of this course counts toward the computational
requirement of the Gordon Rule.
COURSE STRUCTURE
Mondays and Wednesdays, lectures will be given, in which content will be
introduced and example problems solved. Weekly quizzes will be given on
Wednesdays;
The mid-term exams are scheduled on four Fridays:
February 4 and 25, and April 1 and 22.
In addition, the course website on MyStatLab and Blackboard must be checked at least once
a week for important announcements.
REQUIRED TEXT
1. Statistics – the art and science of learning from data, 2e, by Alan Agresti, Christine
Franklin, Pearson Prentice Hall,2007
2. MyStatLab
3. Any scientific calculator with basic statistical functions. Many students use a TI-83
Plus or a similar graphing calculator, but problems are constructed so that a more
advanced calculator affords little advantage.
4. One large blue NCS answer sheet (“scantron”) for each exam.
MAKE-UP POLICY
There will be NO MAKE-UPS on the quizzes. Anyone missing an exam without an official
excuse will receive a zero grade. Any excusable absence must be documented by a verifiable
source, and I must be notified AT LEAST ONE WEEK prior to the exam date. If you are
absent from an exam due to an emergency, such as a car accident or illness, you must notify
me by e-mail WITHIN 24 HOURS after the exam, and written verifiable documentation is
required.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS
The homework is assigned on MyStatLab with due dates. It is important to finish it on time to
help you remain up-to-date, so credit will be given only for homework completed on time.
Exceptions will be made for assignments before the ID is available.

CLASS PARTICIPATION
Excessive talking, rudeness, failure to supervise children, extremely late arrivals or early
departures, possession of a cellular telephone or beeper that disrupts class, etc. may be
penalized by whatever means your instructor considers necessary.
Please be adult, be responsible, be respectful and be kind in the classroom.
This includes:
1. Come to class on time and stay to the end. If you must leave early, let me know at the
beginning of the class and leave quietly. If you get to class late, enter quietly.
2. Don’t hold personal discussions during the lectures. This is a distraction to those of us who
are engaged in learning.
3. Be respectful of others who may have different views and backgrounds than your own.
Do not use derogatory or vulgar language in the classroom.
4. Turn off your cell phones. This is a university requirement.
Note: If you miss a lecture, it is your own responsibility to get notes from a classmate,
not your instructor. Class notes will not be posted online.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT
The University has an honor code to ensure the academic integrity at FAU. Any kind of
academic misconduct will result in an F and will be reported to FAU.
REASONABLE ACCOMODATIONS
Any student who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating his or
her abilities should contact the Office for Students with Disabilities as soon as possible to
make necessary accommodations.
WITHDRAWALS AND INCOMPLETES
At Florida Atlantic University, students are responsible for initiating paperwork for withdrawal.
If you find it necessary to drop the course, please do so before the official university deadline

Incompletes are discouraged. They will be given only under the university’s rules, as specified
in catalogues and handbooks.
