A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER
I am very pleased to welcome you as prospective students
and parents of Parkside School.
Ofsted 2011
Parkside offers the high quality education that students
deserve and that parents, quite rightly, demand for their
children. Above all we care and support young people.
This is a caring school
It is our aim that all students will achieve their potential in a
positive and harmonious working environment.
The school is a calm and orderly
community
The school strives to create an atmosphere of calm
endeavour within which teaching and learning are valued as
the key activities. We aim to have all lessons organised
within our new Learning Framework and available online
and available through our Virtual Learning Environment
as a priority this year.
The care, guidance and support
offered to students are good
The school offers high quality, new facilities in all subject
areas and excellent student facilities. The school prepares
students for life in a 21st century environment and the
delivery of the curriculum employs the use of the most up to
date information technology. The school is fully serviced by
a wireless internet which supports all ICT platforms.
Today, the education of young people is about a successful
partnership. Our students, school staff and parents form
this partnership and together we can make the difference
for your child’s future.
Ofsted 2008
Parkside has an outstanding
school
ethos
that
places
students at the centre of
everything it does.
Together we can achieve “Excellence for all”.

PARKSIDE - A CREATIVE LEARNING TRUST
C&T
The vision for the trust
To enrich the learning journey of every individual student through enhancing the
creative experience within all aspects of curricular and extra curricular activities
In September 2011, Parkside became a Creative Learning Trust. The school buildings, all the facilities and the
school staff are now under the direction of our school Board of Governors. Our new trust partners, noted above,
are fully represented on that Board and have already undertaken activities to support the school in many ways.
A trust enables the school to take a clear, positive direction to engage in activities to support the learning of all
members of our community. It is a registered charity. The vision for the trust is to enrich the learning journey of
every individual student and every individual member of our school community.
As a result of this new status we hope to be able to significantly improve our facilities in terms of the learning
environment and our resources. This path follows on very definitely from our creative endeavours through our
Specialist School Status in the Performing Arts, which we still hold. As the educational landscape
changes Parkside looks for new avenues to support our students and we will now develop this aspect under the
new trust banner.
We clearly wish to maintain this previous expertise as we have had considerable praise for this from many parents,
the local community and Ofsted. Our partners will seek to support this through their engagement with the school.
The C & T Theatre Company has been engaged through the support of a resident practitioner at Parkside for a
number of years and this will continue and grow as they are now a full partner organisation within the trust.
Ofsted 2011
The school has used its specialist status in the arts to promote music, drama and
visual arts. These departments are strong and provide good learning opportunities,
which improve the confidence and self-esteem of young people.

We are always enthusiastic for our students to demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge within a
performance environment and as such take the opportunity to showcase their work by means of public
performances, festivals, galas and competitions. Students continue to gain invaluable experience through such
performances which further increases their attributes and helps to develop a range of personal qualities such as
self-confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, communication and co-operative skills.
There are many examples of this including
Parkside X Factor and Parkside Performing Arts Week.
Similarly the range of extra curricular activities and sporting opportunities for our Parkside students are
outstanding.
Ofsted 2011
Parkside School has a good range of sporting facilities and students participate well
The school environment is stimulating; photographs, sculpture and other examples of
students’ creative work are displayed around the school.
The school has many opportunities for activities and trips. As a school we have established strong international
links which have led to students visiting several European countries. This year students have visited both France
and Spain on educational programmes.
A recent and very exciting venture is our exchange programme with a similar school to Parkside in Brisbane,
Australia and it is hoped that this will become a regular feature in the future. Staff and students from the school are
here with us in November 2011 and we are to organise a return visit for July 2013.
The support of our new partner TUI will bring considerable expertise to this area of common interest.
We also use these opportunities for extra curricular activities to develop our own young people, particularly but not
exclusively our Post 16 students,
Ofsted 2011
Sixth-form students are also able to benefit from the wider opportunities offered in the
school and take important roles in the school’s drama and musical productions.
Students also very much appreciate leadership opportunities with younger students
and can describe career-shaping experiences such as helping in classes or coaching
sports.
.
.
Our advocacy for Parkside is built upon a solid foundation of knowledge and a genuine determination to make a
difference by allowing for choice, challenge and celebration.
Whatever your talents and abilities, there really is so much to do.
Give it a go, become involved and enjoy yourself at Parkside.

SCHOOL VALUES AND AIMS
Our aim at Parkside is to ensure that your child achieves his or her potential through access to the highest
standards of education available. The key phrase is stated as providing and developing “Excellence for All”. This
has a number of key aspects.

Excellence in Achievement
Students will be set clear academic targets for their own personal achievement. These will be based on local and
national information but they will be specific to each individual student. There will also be recognition of
achievements in extra curricular areas.

Excellence in Appearance
Students will be expected to wear the school uniform. Our belief is that a uniform sets a clear, high standard of
personal appearance. The uniform establishes a sense of belonging to an orderly environment.

Excellence in Attitude
Parkside promotes a caring, harmonious and tolerant community where all members show a sense of responsibility
towards each other. It promotes attitudes of fairness and equality as well as key personal values such as self
awareness, self confidence and self esteem.
The ambitions that the school has for its students are realised by a co-operative effort between the school staff and
every student. Parents and members of the local community can play a positive role with their support and
encouragement. The school is an important part of the local community and in turn provides its support for
community ventures. Parkside makes available its excellent resources to support the community in and around the
locality, and has positive links with local sports clubs and youth groups.

Accessibility Statement
Parkside prides itself on the wide range of expertise and experience it provides in supporting students with special
needs. Both teachers and support staff are fully aware of the importance of ensuring that each individual student’s
needs are identified and that appropriate teaching methods are adapted accordingly. Our new school buildings
comply with current regulations and have easy access to all areas for those students who are required to use a
wheelchair. The school has specially adapted disabled toilets and the decoration of the main corridors facilitates
easier navigation for those with impaired sight.
Should an emergency evacuation take place, staff members have been appointed to take responsibility for the safe
evacuation of wheelchair users or physically impaired students. Fire exits and fire evacuation routes have been
checked to ensure that wheelchair users can exit easily.
Details of students’ particular medical needs are displayed in the staff room along with a photograph to ensure that
all staff members are aware of the students’ individual support requirements, outlining any emergency care that
may be needed. Some members of the teaching and support staff are trained in the administration of any special
care requirements and can provide appropriate assistance.
Parkside provides an educational environment
to support students’ inclusion and cohesion
through appropriate programmes of study and
student support mechanisms
Students are not disadvantaged by any
disability. They have full access to all areas of
the curriculum and make curriculum choices
alongside all other students.
Excellence for All

Safeguarding Statement
Parkside School is fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children and young people. It recognises that
all staff members have a professional duty to take such steps as are reasonable to promote safe practice and to
protect children from harm, abuse and exploitation.
Parkside School will ensure the safety and protection of all children involved in its activities through adherence to
the school’s Child Protection Policy, which is reviewed annually by the Governing Body. The school will therefore:
 Practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of all staff and volunteers to work with children.
 Raise awareness of child protection issues and will equip students with the skills needed to keep them safe;
 Implement procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases of abuse;
 Establish a safe environment in which students can learn and develop.
We recognise that because of their day to day contact with students, school staff are well placed to observe the
outward signs of abuse. The school will therefore:
 Establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk and are listened
to.
 Ensure students know that there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried.
 Include opportunities through the school curriculum for students to develop the skills they need to recognise
and stay safe from abuse.
The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator is the first named senior designated person for child protection and
has received appropriate training and support for this role. Staff members understand their responsibility for
referring any concerns to the designated person for child protection. The school has also developed effective links
with relevant agencies and co-operates with their enquiries regarding child protection matters.

PASTORAL AND ACADEMIC ARRANGEMENTS
Form Groups
Students starting school at Parkside are placed in one of six, mixed ability forms. Students remain within these
forms for the first five years of their time at Parkside. Each form will be under the guidance of a Form Tutor who will
look after the day-to-day arrangements for the form. The Form Tutor should be the first point of contact in all
matters concerning students in their Form Group. A behaviour database is kept on all students, which records both
achievements and concerns. This information is available to students and their parents or guardians.
Mrs J Sykes has overall responsibility for student welfare from Year 7 through to Year 11.
The School has both specialist teachers and specialist facilities to support and encourage all students to maximise
their learning at Parkside. Key features of this support include the Student Support Centre, Learning Mentor,
Parental Involvement Worker, Inclusion Team, Education Social Worker, the School Nurse and the School
Counsellor.
A full programme of PSHE and Citizenship is delivered throughout the school by a team of experienced staff on
dedicated “drop down” days.
Regular communication is maintained with parents through conventional consultation evenings but also through
messages, notes found within the student’s personal planner, the website and ParentMail. These school planners
are issued to all students at the beginning of each term and contain key information relating to the school diary
dates and aspects of life within school. They are used by students to maintain a diary of individual homework
assignments, reminders of school events and to log their target grades Parents are requested to check and sign
these planners on a weekly basis.
Teaching Groups
Each Year Group is divided into two equal bands. Within these bands faculties arrange teaching groups based
upon ability. The ability range of the student is determined using data from previous schools as well as internal
assessments using nationally recognised tests. Setting occurs in the majority of subjects based upon ability.
The School Day
The general daily pattern is as follows.
The school day runs from 08.25 until 14.50. There are five periods in the school day; this is divided into two
sessions with a 20 minute breakfast break and a 45 minute lunch break.
Ofsted 2011
There are some good examples of the way in which students contribute to the school
community. The school council have been actively involved in promoting healthier eating
in the canteen. Sixth-form students assist with learning and run some sports clubs for
younger students. Recently, they have also organised a coffee morning in aid of
Macmillan Cancer Support.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
The Special Educational Needs of all students at Parkside are of paramount importance, and are acknowledged
and addressed within the whole school philosophy. The Statement “Excellence for All” which is central to the
school’s ethos is perhaps most evident within the provision for special needs.
At Parkside, every student, whatever their needs might be, is given every opportunity to access the wide and varied
curriculum offered to them, at the appropriate level and with adequate support. Every student is unique, and might
at some point in their education, experience some difficulty. Staff are aware of this, and work together as a whole
school to address the varied needs of provision.
Staff continue to work very hard to establish a successful and effective Special Educational Needs Department and
support network, which caters for a wide spectrum of difficulties. Students who are struggling have their needs met
in small groups, where they follow a differentiated curriculum at their own level and pace. We have also established
links with other alternative curriculum providers and we are able to offer dual registration where appropriate.
There is a Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) for identified students who are on the autism spectrum, based
within the school.
The School is in the process of setting up a Nurture Group. The aim of this group will be to provide a carefully
structured environment, where there will be a balance of learning and teaching, affection and support. Students will
be helped to meet the social and intellectual demands of school life.
The School’s aim is that all students, irrespective of their difficulties, feel secure, comfortable and valued within the
community. Subsequently, they will then gain the confidence and self esteem to realise their true potential, and
become successful adults. All students are encouraged to respect and accept others who experience special
needs within the positive and supportive structures which exist in the school.
INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Increasingly student learning utilises the full potential of the Internet and all students have access to this resource.
Every student has an individual user area and e-mail address. The school maintains an “Acceptable Use Policy”
which informs students about appropriate use of ICT equipment. This policy can be found in the student planner
and all students are expected to sign this. Subject areas provide work and teaching materials via our Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE) which can be accessed via the school website using the eLearning link, or directly at
moodle.parkside-school.net. The school has an established website at www.parksideschool.net

SCHOOL UNIFORM
The school has a uniform, which is a formal dress code for all students. Our belief is that the uniform sets a clear
standard of personal appearance which students are expected to comply with. School uniform can be purchased
from various suppliers, including supermarkets, however Parkside named items are available through Andrew Firth
School Uniform Suppliers of Keighley. Summer uniform, compulsory during the summer term comprises of a white
polo shirt with the school logo and a black sweater, also with the school logo.
The only jewellery allowed is one stud per ear; no other piercings are allowed to be worn in school. Students may
wear a watch. Trainers are not allowed and can only be worn for PE lessons; students should wear black shoes
which should be low heeled and suitable for school.

stud or ring can be removed. This rule will only apply to those sports where it is considered too dangerous to use
tape, as laid down by the National Governing Body. If students are going to have their ears pierced, we ask that
this is done at the start of the summer holidays to allow healing to take place before the start of the new academic
year, so that piercings can be removed.
Loss of Items of Uniform and Personal Property – Important Notice for Parents
The School cannot be held responsible for students’ personal belongings. Any items brought into school should be
clearly named and will remain the students’ responsibility. The School will take all reasonable steps to ensure that
named items are returned to the student. If parents/carers wish to send their child (ren) to school in high value
items of clothing, or with high value items of property, they do so at their own risk.
Parents may wish to consider ensuring that they have appropriate “All Risks” cover in place on their own insurance

Important Information about the Use of School Lockers
Lockers are available to hire from the school at the cost of £5.00. Any malicious damage caused to the locker will
be charged for. Lost lockers keys will be charged for, before a replacement key is issued. The lockers must be
emptied at the end of each school term so that they can be cleaned. The lockers must be looked after and the key
returned to school. All contents and belongings placed in the locker remain the students’ responsibility and are at
the students’ own risk. The school cannot be held accountable or responsible for items not removed at the end of
each term. By accepting the locker key/combination lock and paying the cost of the hire, the student is accepting
these terms and conditions for hiring the locker.

POST 16 EDUCATION AT PARKSIDE
Parkside Post 16 was established in 2003. Since then it has grown year on year and is now a vibrant community of
180 students in Years 12 and 13. Our Post 16 subject teachers are specialists in their fields and between them
offer a wide range of Level 2 and Level 3 courses.
Courses
We cater both for students with aspirations to go on to Higher Education and also those wishing to improve their
GCSE grades by offering a bridging year during which students can retake GCSE English and Maths, start an A
Level in an applied subject and also boost their overall GCSEs by following courses in work skills and Public
Services and ICT. We offer a wide range of Level 3 (A Levels) courses. These are in subjects ranging from the
traditional History and English Literature to the very popular Psychology and Sociology.
In designing our curriculum we take account of what students want and have recently introduced Religion,
Philosophy and Ethics, Food Technology, Applied Science, Film Studies and Government and Politics in direct
response to students’ requests. For more information on our current curriculum offer, please see our website. We
strive to provide courses for every student.
Achievement
‘A’ Level results for 2011 are:
A*-Es – 99%
A*-Cs – 67%
A*-Bs – 40%
A*-As – 25%
100% of Bridging Year students achieved an AS in Applied Science.
Average UCAS points score is 258.5 i.e. almost C C B
We are also proud that 57out of 58 students wishing to go to university gained places last year and are doing a
wide range of Degree courses all over the country, from Economics at Durham University or Education Studies at
Cambridge to Primary Teaching at Nottingham-Trent University and Web Design at Stafford.
Enrichment
In addition to the academic achievements of our students, we are also very keen to develop the whole person. To
this end we have a comprehensive enrichment programme in which every student participates. Extra-curricular
activities that students are currently involved in include charity fund-raising, running clubs for students lower down
the school and setting up recycling schemes within the whole school. Post 16 students also help run the Over 60s
club in Cullingworth Village.
Tutor Groups
Each student is a member of a Yr 12 or Yr 13 tutor group led by an Achievement Tutor specially selected for the
post because of their skills and experience in Post 16 mentoring and guidance. Students have regular one to one
sessions with their tutors at which progress is monitored and targets agreed and set.
In its latest inspection, OFSTED commended Post 16 as “a strength of the school” and judged us as “good” in
terms of achievement, teaching and learning and care, support and guidance. In a thank-you note our Cambridge
student wrote: “You have given me the best support I could wish for, keeping me feeling cared for and encouraged
to achieve all I can. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

PARKSIDE POLICIES
Parkside School has a range of policies in place and here is a summary of policies relating to student achievement
and welfare:

Assessment Policy: This policy details how the school assesses and reports on student progression. The
policy details procedures for ensuring consistency and continuity within a subject area and across subjects. A
range of Assessment for Learning strategies are detailed within the policy.

Learning and Teaching Policy: The policy aims to focus school activity on the core purpose of providing
“Excellence for All” for our students in learning and teaching. Learning and Teaching is the number one priority
of the School Development Plan. The policy includes statements about the learning environment, the learning
timetable and the curriculum.

Equality Policy: The policy details the school’s duty regarding the elimination of unlawful racial discrimination
and the promotion of race equality. Included is information about Parkside’s commitment to actively promoting
race equality, opposing racism in all its forms and fostering positive attitudes. The policy also relates to the
elimination of unlawful discrimination and harassment of disabled persons, the need to take into account of
disabilities, the promotion of positive attitudes towards disabled persons and the need to encourage
participation by disabled persons.

Community Cohesion Policy: This policy details the school’s work to promote community cohesion.

Special Educational Needs Policy: The policy adopted by the governing body for meeting their duties in
relation to students who have special educational needs. The policy states that Parkside will strive to offer all
students access to a broad, balanced, relevant and if appropriate, differentiated curriculum. We aim to develop
self discipline, self respect and confidence within our students so that they may become independent, self
motivated adults able to take responsibility for themselves, whilst showing consideration and respect for others.

Inclusion and Exclusion Policy: This policy pays regard to the elimination of unlawful discrimination and
promotion of equality of opportunity for all students irrespective of race or gender. The policy details the
school’s focus on social inclusion. Details include the school’s commitment to raising educational achievement
for those students who are demonstrating disaffection or failing to participate fully in the school experience
through challenging behaviour or poor attendance.

Collective Worship Policy: The policy relating to the school’s duties relating to collective worship. The
school believes that collective worship provides students with valuable time and space, outside the demands of
the curriculum, to reflect upon and deepen their individual sense of identity and their place in the school
community, in the neighbourhood and the wider world.

Looked After Children Policy: A policy adopted by the governing body for providing support to students who
are looked after/in public care. Parkside School aims to promote the educational achievement and welfare of
Looked After Children. The Governing Body is committed to providing quality education for all of its students
based on equality of access, opportunity and outcomes.

Behaviour Policy: A policy determined by Mrs Jo Sykes in liaison with key staff, students and the governors
with respect to the behaviour of students in the school. The policy includes the Behaviour for Learning System
with details of rewards and sanctions and other strategies used within school.


Student Attendance Policy: A policy adopted by the governing body for securing the regular attendance of
students at the school. Parkside School aims to maximise attendance rates in order to ensure that all students
are able to take the fullest advantage of the learning experiences available to them. The school firmly believes
that students who attend school on a regular basis are less likely to be placed in unsafe situations and have
understanding of the importance of their own safety and that of others. Every child has a fundamental right to
be educated. Parents and teachers have a duty to ensure full attendance at school.

Gifted and Talented Policy: This policy outlines the school’s responsibility for identifying and making
provision for gifted and talented students. The school accepts the challenge of promoting both high
achievement amongst its students and positive attitudes and high expectations by all in the school. A Gifted
and Talented Action Plan is established as part of the Learning and Teaching School Development Plan, to
enhance the learning experience of our Gifted and Talented students.

School Uniform: The Governing Body provides, as part of the school prospectus a list of school uniform in
relation to both normal day to day uniform and also sports requirements for all students from Year 7 to Year 11.
There is no formal uniform for Post 16 students.

Parental Involvement: The school has a parental involvement worker (PIW) whose primary role is in relation
to transition with particular emphasis on parents. The PIW will provide a range of services to parents, from
drop-in sessions to holding courses. A major part of her role is to co-ordinate out regular Transition for Parents
(T4P) events which are held at least three times a year. These are for students and parents in Years 6 and 7
and cover a range of topics that parents are concerned about during transition to secondary school as well as
some fun activities.
Parents may obtain an electronic copy of any of the above policies on request by emailing or calling the school.
Paper copies can be posted to parents but a charge may be levied to cover the copying and postage costs.
