Financial Aid Packet for Seniors
A list of scholarships, websites, and financial
aid sources to be updated often
All you gotta do is apply!
Updated 10-15-07
Financial Aid Websites:
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. DO NOT pay someone to search for financial aid for
you unless you are extremely lazy or have money to throw around carelessly! Everything they find
can be found on the internet for FREE. Sometimes it helps to buy a few books but don’t spend
more than twenty dollars. Here are some websites to get you on the path to college riches.
www.fafsa.ed.gov This website is one of the most important sites to visit during your college quest.
Visit before January to apply for your PIN. Fill out your FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible.
ALL colleges require you to submit FAFSA information in order to receive a financial aid package!
www.collegefortexans.com College for Texans is a website designed to give Texas students a way to
plan for college, apply for the TEXAS grant, and provide support to students who are dependents of
military personnel. This is also a very important site.
www.fastweb.com My personal favorite!! FastWeb provides a comprehensive search engine to over
800,000 scholarships, grants, contests, and loans. The profile is time consuming but pays off BIG in
the end. Try it.
www.finaid.com The sister site to Fastweb, FinAid provides financial aid info regarding all areas of
student aid
www.scholarships.com Also a very good scholarship search engine, scholarships.com provides the
same info as Fastweb.
www.act.org The ACT website. Use this site to register for the ACT, search for colleges and careers,
download information about colleges, and utilize study guides.
www.collegeboard.com The SAT website. College Board has a college search engine that will help
you locate colleges with you major as well as help you find a college that fits your personality.
www.thea.nesinc.com The THEA is the standardized test you take if you are going to a junior
college or technical school and you do not want to attend a four-year University right off the bat.
There are ways to be exempt from the THEA so don’t lose hope. Ask your friendly counselor if you
have to take it.
www.makingitcount.com EXCELLENT website for college planning and career decision-making.
Visit the site at least once. You can find helpful college visit checklists as well as tools to help you
plan for the future.
www.military.com If you are planning on participating in any ROTC program, the dependent child
of military personnel, or attending a military institution this website is for you. It has all the
scholarship information you need.
www.needcollegemoney.com This is an excellent website with several links to scholarship search
engines. They also have a comprehensive list of guaranteed University scholarships from across the
US
www.Number2.com A great SAT, ACT and GRE study site and best of all… IT’S FREE! You can also
sign up for a scholarship at this site. The awards are selected at random so if you don’t qualify for
other scholarships try this one. Everyone has a fighting chance.
www.kaplan.com Another good study site for ACT and SAT
www.petersons.com/ Peterson’s Planner Finding the right college; studying for the SAT or ACT;
exploring financial aid; and advance your career through this location.
www.studentaid.gov A government run website for student aid. Hey, you helped pay for it with that
job at Burger Barn, so why not use it?
www.eduinconline.com A common application that goes to 34 historically black universities. There
is a one-time fee of $35. You can get yours online or you can pick one up in the counselor’s office.
www.applytexas.org A common application for ALL public universities in the state of Texas as well as
some private schools such as Baylor
www.collegenet.com/ College Net This site has college search; applications; scholarships; and
information for soon to be college students and current college students.
www.entrepreneurU.org a website that outlines several different college entrepreneur programs.
http://chronicle.com/ The Chronicle of Higher Education Provides higher-education news from
around the Web.
www.rwm.org/rwm/ RWM Vocational School Database RWM provides a database of Private Postsecondary Vocational Schools in all 50 states, organized first by state, then by Training Occupation.
http://ecos.princetonreview.com/public/AboutUs.asp Educational and Career Opportunities System
ECOS is an online product designed to help guidance counselors guide and monitor their students
throughout their educational careers.
http://www.cdr.state.tx.us/RealityCheck/ Reality check is a great website for showing kids how
much it costs to live and what careers can facilitate your desired lifestyle
www.zinch.com College recruiting site. Also has scholarship contests and blogs about getting into
the college of your dreams.
Loans
(The dreaded five letter word)
First of all, let me say that loans should be your LAST resort to pay for college. After applying for
and winning all those scholarships you will probably only need minimal funds. If you do borrow
money for college try to keep it at a minimum and use it for tuition and related expenses ONLY. A
good rule of thumb in college and in life is: If you can’t afford it you don’t need it! Try to stay away
from credit cards too! You can ruin your credit in college. Get educated when it comes to your
credit! A great website to do this is www.makingitcount.com or any of the credit reporting agencies
web sites such as www.experian.com or www.transunion.com
Visit these websites regarding student loans:
www.salliemae.com
www.chasestudentloans.com
http://studentaid.gov
Many states offer loan forgiveness programs but you have to fit the requirements for eligibility.
