In response to the 512 Sichuan earthquake, the University of Hong Kong has set up a roundtable
to promote and connect efforts by staff and students in services and research related to the relief
and reconstruction work. HKU and the Beijing Normal University also jointly established the
Catastrophe Management Initiative (CMI).
A number of HKU students have helped the quake survivors to rebuild their livelihood in the past
months through various service programmes. In the sharing session, a group of HKU students
who went to Sichuan during the past Christmas and Easter holidays will let you know their
experience.

Hong Kong Red Cross focuses on humanity. They offer opportunities for young people to
challenge their limits. Ethiopia, Kenya and Cambodia are places that are always affected by
disasters and conflicts. Do you want to visit these places to make some contributions? Here is a
chance for you to acquire leadership through making your own action plans.
Attend this sharing session to learn how other HKU students faced challenges in the process,
what they learned, and how they acquired international vision and leadership in humanitarian
services.
為何古巴？海外實習的另類選擇 Why Cuba: an alternative choice for overseas internship

Have you planned to go on an overseas internship this summer? USA, UK or Europe? What about
an alternative choice – Cuba?
Cuba has suffered from trade embargo for half of a century. Despite the limited resources, the
development of organic farming brings hope to the country. The Cuban culture is so diverse that
many people are enchanted by this place.
The speaker, Chan May-ling has been living in Cuba for five years. In the talk, she will provide
information on internship in Cuba and share her experience in how to equip ourselves before living
in a developing country.
Ms. Chan May-ling served as Programme Director of Oxfam Hong Kong and had been to India
and Africa as a volunteer. She first visited Cuba in 1997 as a tourist. After her first encounter, she
fell in love with Cuba. Since 2005, she has been staying in Cuba for agricultural production and
research, and having her PhD study. Cuba is now her second home.

A venturer of Raleigh’s expedition programme will share his voluntary service experience in Africa
with you in this sharing session.
Venturers of the Raleigh Programme will take part in a four to 10-week overseas voluntary service
and adventure project. Living in an unfamiliar and harsh enviornment, the Venturers will face
challenges towards their commitment, endurance and courage. They will work with participants from
different countries, races and backgrounds under limited resources and time to complete projects which
give genuine community, environmental or scientific benefits to the local communities.
