Texas Tech research; West Nile virus discovered in Texas quail population
Researchers with a conservation alliance based at Texas Tech University have found a
quail loaded with high levels of the antibody that fights West Nile virus, officials said
today. The small bird, known as a scaled or blue quail, was captured in Potter County by a
team from Quail-Tech Alliance, a partnership between Texas Tech’s natural resources
management department and Quail First, a Dallas-based non-profit quail conservation
organization. more »

CASNR hosts Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo officials at Merket
luncheon
More than 120 Texas Tech University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural
Resources students, faculty and guests took a moment to thank and express their
appreciation to 17 representatives from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at a
special scholarship luncheon on Oct. 25 at the university’s Merket Alumni Center. more »

Viewpoint: Distinguished lecture series brings noted plant breeders to
campus
Nationally recognized plant breeder Stan Cox shed light on the daunting challenge of
breeding perennial grain crops as part of a new Texas Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil
Science Distinguished Lecture Series launched this semester. Speaking to an audience of
students and faculty Sept. 27 at the Escondido Theater in Tech’s Student Union Building,
the senior research scientist and coordinator of research at The Land Institute related his
work to increased food and ecosystem security. more »
Texas Tech takes top spot at Eastern National Meat Judging Contest
Texas Tech garnered three of the top-ten individual spots on its way to taking first place
honors Saturday (Oct. 2) at the Eastern National Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in
Wyalusing, Pa. Tech’s meat judging teams have a strong winning streak rolling now,
taking 15 of the past 16 national meat judging competitions. more »
Barrel racers lead Texas Tech rodeo teams to strong showing at Sul Ross
State
Led by a strong riding in the barrel racing events, Texas Tech’s women’s rodeo team
rolled to a third place finish over the weekend at the Sul Ross State University rodeo in
Alpine. Held at the Turner Range Animal Science Center’s S.A.L.E. Arena, the meeting was
the Red Raiders second Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association

In Profile: AFS Grad, Lubbock Orthopedic Surgeon Bryan Smitherman
Specializing in joint reconstruction and replacement – particularly knees, hips and
shoulders – Bryan Smitherman is a successful orthopedic surgeon in private practice at
Lubbock’s Center for Orthopedic Surgery. But in a slightly different academic take from
his peers, the McLean native’s path to medicine took him through Texas Tech’s College of
Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. more »

For more than seven years, the Texas Tech Equestrian Center has been the heart of the
