English Department Internship Packet English 399R Jamie Horrocks Internship Coordinator 4169 JFSB, 422-8788 jamie_horrocks@byu.edu Welcome to your internship experience! This document provides all the information you’ll need to complete a successful internship and includes the following: Internship Overview Internship Assignments Internship Work Log Internship Report Samples & Descriptions (Initial, Midterm, and Final) Midterm Evaluation for Internship Supervisor Final Evaluation for Internship Supervisor You should have an electronic copy, as well as a hard copy, of this document for future reference and use. Make sure you have both copies with you before leaving BYU if your internship is national or international. Internship Overview Rationale Internships—along with minor(s), double majors, work experience, extracurricular activities, study abroad, computer literacy, and so on—can round out your English major nicely and prepare you more fully for your post-graduate career. Putting your English skills to the test in a workplace environment gives you both confidence and experience in pursuing your career goals. 69% of BYU students who do an internship end up with full-time jobs in their chosen fields. 1 Resources Begin your internship search by going to the website for BYU’s Internship Office (www.byu.edu/intern) and peruse the site to familiarize yourself with our internship programs and policies. You’ll find information on every aspect of internships, including lists of BYU providers as well as other internship listings. Save yourself time, energy, and frustration by orienting yourself well before beginning your internship search and application for academic credit. The College of Humanities is currently in the process of developing a data base of internships that would be especially suitable for majors within our college. Check out internships on the college website (http://human.byu.edu) by clicking on “For Students” and then selecting “Internships.” From time to time the English Department receives requests from companies for interns. We publish these opportunities in “English Dept News,” a weekly electronic newsletter sent to all English majors, and also post them on the Internships and Employment bulletin board located between 4186 and 4188 on the east wing of the 4th floor of the JFSB. Responsibility It’s up to you to arrange your own internship. You can make use of all the university and personal resources available to you, but no one is going to do your work for you. Hustling an internship will prepare you for hustling your first full-time job and, most importantly, remind you that you’re in charge of your life, your education, and your career. Once you land that internship, you should use BYU’s new IRAMS system (available through the Internship Office home page by clicking on “Internship Application” or through Route Y by typing “Intern01” in the Quick URL box or through the AIM registration system) to apply for English 399R internship credit. Once you complete the on-line application, the system will forward it to the department’s internship coordinator for approval or denial. Immediately arrange to meet with the coordinator personally to discuss the internship in detail and to receive the necessary internship materials for 399R. This meeting must take place before the coordinator can approve your internship. 2 Approved applications move on to BYU’s Internship Office and (if the internship is international) to the Kennedy Center for approval or denial. You’ll get an email with an explanation in the case of a denied application. Requirements BYU internship policy stipulates that internship credit can’t be awarded retroactively. No exceptions. In addition, English Department internship applications must have completed the entire approval process by the first day of class for the semester or term of the internship. Further, internship providers must be registered and approved by BYU. Currently, the English Department limits internship credit to 3.0 credit hours only for English 399R, which translates to a minimum of 150 hours of on-site work or approximately 10 hours per week during a regular semester. English 399R requires an interview with the internship coordinator, weekly reports, a substantial final internship report, and a midterm and a final evaluation completed by the intern’s on-site supervisor. Internship Assignments Once your internship has been approved and you’ve been enrolled officially for 3.0 credit hours of English 399R, you can prepare for your internship by reviewing the following assignments and forms: Weekly Internship Work Logs. (30 %) Initial, Midterm, and Final Internship Reports. (30%) Midterm and Final Supervisor Reports. (40%) Your final grade for the course will be determined by the internship coordinator based on your work logs and reports (60%) and on your supervisor’s evaluation (40%). Please send this weekly report by the following Monday of the reported work week. Make sure to keep a copy of each work log for future reference. 3 Internship Reports. You’ll complete three reports over the course of your internship, the initial report (1 full page, single spaced) on the nature of your internship and your goals, the midterm report (2 full pages, single spaced) a reflection on your current progress, and the final report (4 full pages, single spaced) on your complete internship experience and your accomplishment of the goals you set earlier. Your weekly work logs will provide an important record you’ll want to reference in preparing these three reports. Sample reports, including instructions on format and content, are included at the end of this document. Supervisor Reports. You’ll ask your immediate supervisor to fill out a confidential midterm and a final performance report on you which should be sent directly to the internship coordinator by your supervisor. 4 INTERNSHIP WORK LOG Name: Week Number: Internship: Date: Date Day Hours Primary Responsibilities & Duties M Tu W Th F Total Hours Worked: Descriptive Summary of Week’s Activities (projects, duties, training, meetings, other) Positive Learning Experiences Knowledge: Skills: 5 Personal Growth: Career Development: Challenges or Problems Encountered Plans / Progress for Meeting Challenges / Solving Problems 6 Memo English 399R, Ltd.
