MUSCLES
MUSCLE ORIGINS/INSERTIONS/ACTIONS
Masseter
Origin: zygomatic process and arch
Insertion: angle and ramus of mandible
Action: closes jaw and elevates mandible
Sternocleidomastoid Origin: manubrium and medial portion of clavicle
Insertion: mastoid process of temporal bone
Action: simultaneous: flexion of neck forward, individual: rotate head toward shoulder
Trapezius
Origin: occipital bone, ligamentum nuchae, spines of C7 and all thoracic vertebrae
Insertion: acromion and spinous process of scapula, clavicle
Action: extends head, retracts, adducts scapula and stabilizes it, upper fiber elevate scapula, lower fibers depress it
Deltoid
Origin: clavicle
Insertion: deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Action: as whole: #1 mover of arm abduction, can aid in flexion, extension, and rotationof humerus
Levator scapulae
Origin: transverse processes of C1 through C4
Insertion: vertebral border of scapula
Action: raises and adducts scapula, w/ fixed scapula flexes neck to same side
Pectoralis major
Origin: clavicle, sternum, cartilage of first 6 ribs, aponeurosis of external oblique muscle
Insertion: by short tendon into greater tubercle of humerus
Action: #1 mover of arm flexion, adducts, medially rotates, pulls chest upward (inspiration)
Latissimus dorsi
Origin: indirectly to spinous processes of lower 6 thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, lower 3-4 ribs, iliac crest
Insertion: floor of intertubercular groove of humerus
Action: #1 mover of arm extension, adducts and medially rotates arm, depresses scapula, brings arm down in power stroke
Triceps brachi: Lateral head
Origin: inferior margin of glenoid cavity
Long head
Origin: posterior humerus
Medial head
Origin: distal radial groove on posterior humerus
Insertion all: olecranon process of ulna
Action all: extends forearm, antagonist to brachialis & biceps brachii
Gluteus maximus
Origin: dorsal ilium, sacrum, and coccyx
Insertion: gluteal tuberosity of femur and iliotibial tract
Action: hip extension, antagonist of iliopsoas, laterally rotates thigh
Sartorius
Origin: anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: by an aponeurosis into medial aspect of proximal tibia
Action: flexes and laterally rotates thigh, flexes knee , Tailor’s muscle”
Gastrocnemius
Origin: by two heads from medial and lateral condyles of femur
Insertion: calcaneus via calcaneal tendon
Action: crosses knee joint, thus also can flex knee when foot is dorsiflexed
External intercostals Origin: inferior border of rib above
Insertion: superior border of rib below
Action: pull ribs toward one another to elevate rib cage, aid in inspiration
