Executive Summary
Jobs for Peace Programme, supported by FAO Nepal selected 10 VDCs out of 96
VDCs in Rautahat for its programme implementation. IPM Farmers Society, Rautahat
organized 10 Junior Farmers Field and Life Schools in the selected Programme VDCs for
the first time in Nepal with its great initiation and proper management. The classes
were conducted on winter season vegetable crops from the beginning of January 2010
to the end of July 2010 with financial support of FAO Nepal. The main objective of JFFLS
conduction is to empower the youths with the skill of promoting economical farming
and capacitate them to identify for proper linkage with the market for enterprise
development in inclusive way by forming groups of youths giving high priority to the
welfare of under or unemployed youths (boys and girls) from poor, dalit and scheduled
caste and communities.
The JFFLS experiment showed that 20-25% production was increased with 60%
reduction in use of chemical pesticide. They have learnt to grow healthy vegetables for
healthy, wealthy and safe life. A total of 300 participants graduated from JFFLS
including 50% girl participants. By this programme JFFLS participants were empowered
and became expert in their own field. The participants received trainings on capacity
building, observation, analyzing, decision making and organizing skills. Through this
programme, request was made to various development organizations to pay attention
on the performance of junior farmer’s organization/network and to grant necessary
assistance, so that they can perform such type of work independently. After completion
of JFFLS, participants learnt the importance of balanced dose of chemical fertilizer
for healthy crop production as well as diseases and insect pests management. Being
impressed by IPM methodology participants felt that they can do organic farming. They
learnt the importance of balanced diet, personal and social hygiene maintenance to be
safe from diseases and some basic skills of business with available resources for income
generation.
