District IPM Farmers Society, Rautahat 1 Executive Summary Jobs for Peace Programme, supported by FAO Nepal selected 10 VDCs out of 96 VDCs in Rautahat for its programme implementation. IPM Farmers Society, Rautahat organized 10 Junior Farmers Field and Life Schools in the selected Programme VDCs for the first time in Nepal with its great initiation and proper management. The classes were conducted on winter season vegetable crops from the beginning of January 2010 to the end of July 2010 with financial support of FAO Nepal. The main objective of JFFLS conduction is to empower the youths with the skill of promoting economical farming and capacitate them to identify for proper linkage with the market for enterprise development in inclusive way by forming groups of youths giving high priority to the welfare of under or unemployed youths (boys and girls) from poor, dalit and scheduled caste and communities. The JFFLS experiment showed that 20-25% production was increased with 60% reduction in use of chemical pesticide. They have learnt to grow healthy vegetables for healthy, wealthy and safe life. A total of 300 participants graduated from JFFLS including 50% girl participants. By this programme JFFLS participants were empowered and became expert in their own field. The participants received trainings on capacity building, observation, analyzing, decision making and organizing skills. Through this programme, request was made to various development organizations to pay attention on the performance of junior farmer’s organization/network and to grant necessary assistance, so that they can perform such type of work independently. After completion of JFFLS, participants learnt the importance of balanced dose of chemical fertilizer for healthy crop production as well as diseases and insect pests management. Being impressed by IPM methodology participants felt that they can do organic farming. They learnt the importance of balanced diet, personal and social hygiene maintenance to be safe from diseases and some basic skills of business with available resources for income generation. 2 At the end of JFFLS, the participants were able to produce healthy crop with minimal financial resources using local dung fertilizer and local bio and botanical pesticides. They also learnt best techniques to do vegetable farming safely by preventing health hazards of chemical. Moreover, they also learnt to generate income and to plan business based on local resources. The JFFLSs in Rautahat is registered as youth farmers group at District Agriculture Development Office, Rautahat with the aim of registering into cooperatives for the sustainability of the programme. The participating youths promoted JFFLS very well during celebration of the graduation day. 3
