1. WHAT YOU NEED TO PASS THE GEOGRAPHIC
ASSESSMENT
The assessment on the geography of Melbourne requires you to be able to:






read and locate places, roads and routes around Melbourne using maps
know Melbourne’s suburbs, including the Central Business District (CBD) and the
inner and outer metropolitan areas
know major roads across Melbourne and the suburbs along these roads
know the direction you need to travel to get to places around Melbourne
know key landmarks, tourist attractions, buildings, main sporting facilities, theatres,
cinemas, shopping centres, hospitals, universities and hotels
know when and where major events are held in Melbourne.
You will need to study maps of the Melbourne area to prepare for this assessment. You
should use a current street directory and/or a good online mapping application to learn
places, roads and routes around Melbourne.
You will also need to spend time navigating your way around Melbourne. This should
include the CBD and the inner and outer metropolitan areas.
Your aim should be to develop a very detailed knowledge of Melbourne and key
destinations. This chapter of the handbook provides you with details of what you are
expected to know.
1
2. KNOWING THE ROADS IN MELBOURNE
2.1 Freeways, toll roads and highways
There are a number of freeways, toll roads and highways that are part of the Melbourne
road network, which connect Melbourne to various destinations – see the map below.
2
Some of the highways in Melbourne have alternative names, for example:













Burwood Highway (Toorak Road, Monbulk Road)
Dandenong Valley Highway (Stud Road, Dandenong-Frankston Road)
Docklands Highway (Francis Street, Whitehall Street, Footscray Road)
Eastern Highway (Alexandra Parade)
Hume Highway (Sydney Road)
Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road)
Moorooduc Highway (McMahons Road)
Nepean Highway (St Kilda Road, Brighton Road, Point Nepean Road)
Plenty Valley Highway (Albert Street, Plenty Road)
Princes Highway East (Dandenong Road)
Princes Highway West (Geelong Road, Ballarat Road, Smithfield Road,
Racecourse Road)
Western Highway (Ballarat Road)
Westernport Highway (Dandenong-Hastings Road).
TIP
Drive on Melbourne’s freeways and tollways, and study maps of these. Note each of the
exits and the suburbs with which they connect.
2.2 Off-ramps on freeways and tollways
Off-ramps are used by drivers to exit freeways and tollways. You will need to know which
exits connect freeways and tollways with particular suburbs or destinations. Exits are
different for inbound and outbound traffic. Inbound means you are travelling towards the
CBD. Outbound means you are travelling away from the CBD.
For instance if a driver is travelling inbound on the West Gate Freeway and passing the
Williamstown Road off-ramp. They would take this ramp if going to Williamstown,
Yarraville or Spotswood.
The map below shows all the exits on the West Gate Freeway. You will need to know
these as well as the exits for the other freeways and tollways around Melbourne.
2.3 Major and minor roads
The Melbourne road network has a number of major roads. Some of these include:

Bell Street
3














Burwood Highway
Calder Freeway
Docklands Highway
Hume Freeway
Keilor Road
Mornington Peninsula Freeway
Nepean Highway
North Road
Princess Highway
Punt Road/Hoddle Street
M80 Ring Road
Riversdale Road
Tullamarine Freeway
Western Freeway.
There are two tollways in the Melbourne road network – CityLink and EastLink.
Some major roads continue on away from the CBD but have different names, for
example:




Queens Parade continues on as High Street
Cotham Road continues on as Whitehorse Road
Toorak Road continues on as Burwood Highway
Dynon Road continues on as Barkly Street.
TIP
Study these and other major roads. Make sure you can find them on a map.
There are four major freeway tunnels in the Melbourne road network. These tunnels are:
Freeway Tunnel
Freeway Connection
Domain Tunnel
(CityLink)
Connects Monash Freeway to the West Gate Freeway
(westbound)
Burnley Tunnel
(CityLink)
Connects West Gate Freeway to the Monash Freeway
(eastbound)
Melba Tunnel
(EastLink)
Connects EastLink with the Eastern Freeway (inbound)
Mullum Mullum Tunnel
(EastLink)
Connects the Eastern Freeway with EastLink (outbound)
2.4 Suburbs of Melbourne
You will need to know the following about Melbourne’s suburbs:
4

The order of suburbs from Melbourne’s CBD along major roads.
For example, if you are driving south from the CBD on Punt Road you will pass the
following suburbs in order:

o Richmond
o Cremorne
o South Yarra
o Prahran
o Windsor
o St Kilda
The suburbs located at the end of major roads.
For example, heading south from the Melbourne CBD, the suburb that is located at
the end of Punt Road is St Kilda.

The direction you will need to travel to get to suburbs.
For example, to get from Footscray to Sunshine you will need to travel west.

How to spell Melbourne’s suburbs.
For example, you may be asked verbally to type the first four letters of the suburb
Seddon. You need to know that this is sedd or SEDD.

The suburb to travel to when a customer gives you a street address.
For example, if a customer says ‘Take me to the corner of Lygon St and Elgin St’,
you need to know that this is in Carlton.
