Home > News Intermittent intersection closures resume July 22 and 23 along Marquette Avenue Beginning Wednesday, July 22, weather permitting, street paving will resume along Marquette Avenue between 5th and 10th streets. All cross streets within this area will be restricted to one or two lanes for the next two to three weeks. Drivers should plan for longer delays on these streets. Short-term intersection closures will occur only when paving operations are in the affected intersections and these closures are expected to last between 15-60 minutes. Police officers will be on site to direct traffic during these short-term intersection closures. The short-term closures are expected to occur on: July 22 to July 23 - paving will occur on the east half of Marquette Avenue from 5th to 10th streets. Tentatively July 31 and Aug. 1 paving will occur on the west half of Marquette Avenue from 5th to 10th streets. This work is part of the reconstruction of Marquette and 2nd avenues, also known as MARQ2, which will add additional transit lanes, widen sidewalks, and improve the streetscape. The new transit lanes will dramatically increase the number of buses that will be able to use Marquette and 2nd avenues, and will significantly decrease the time it takes buses to get through downtown. Marquette and 2nd avenues each have one lane open for local traffic and access is maintained to all parking ramps and loading docks. Pedestrian access is provided to all buildings at all time. Drivers in downtown Minneapolis should expect traffic delays throughout the year as MARQ2 enters its final and most extensive phase of construction. MARQ2 construction began last year, with utility work and paving on five of the northernmost blocks along these downtown streets. This year’s construction began where last year’s left off and will generally work its way from north to south. All work will be completed by December 2009, as required by federal funding.
