This non-profit organization provide young boys and men with life experiences like leadership skills, professional development opportunities and offering a positive male role model to help them develop into well-rounded men. Currently, Life Experiences offers two programs: 1) ROPE (Right of Passage Experience) a 13-week program for 13-18 year old boys to provide life experiences; 2) ROPE Alumni is a program that provides ongoing support for ROPE graduates and the program connects alumni’s with professionals in the community. We could potentially bring alumni’s to our meetings or have our members present on their professionals at one of their weekly Saturday evening meetings at Kingsview Public School. Some members also suggested that we invite them to some of our volunteering initiatives in the city as a way to socialize with our members and to contribute to their community. The program is launching again on September 15, 2012 and will welcome new students based on their current referral process. Students look forward to an established curriculum that focuses on helping students with learning about their identity, responsibilities and the role they play in their family. Life Experiences organizes activities to help build selfesteem and also provide parenting skills sessions to parents to teach them the necessary tools to help raise their children. Mickey mentioned that the most difficult challenge their organization faces is the parent-child conflict. Many of their enrolled students come from single-parent homes and do not have positive male role models in their lives. Currently, 40 percent of the students have graduated high school and are pursuing post-secondary education. The other 60 percent are working towards attaining their high school diploma and looking forward to applying for University or College. Our club engaged in a lengthy question and answer period and seemed to be very interested in bringing in some of these young men to our meetings or events. Thanks to Kurt for being a trailblazer in his community and speaking to us about his work.
